Was on Triple H hike noted on here from 7 years ago. Made a last minute attempt at summit but turned around. October 2024 did a loop and marked waypoint of where we'd leave the trail.

Was set to do this last month but was postponed to today. Took the direct route. Leave trail bout 3 . miles in. Was making great time to that point. Well, that all changed.

There is a use trail to follow for a while. I recognized the portion I gave up on March 2018. We pushed up a bit higher and then turned right. Soon saw actual summit. Ok, this is going to get challenging.

Jumping cholla attacked me. 😆 Needed trail surgery. Damn that was painful. 🤬 As we neared summit, multiple points of contact req scrambling up & down. Hung out at the summit and created a registry. Fun outing although I doubt any of us will be attempting it again anytime soon.😅

101 degrees in Phoenix today and made it up Elephant! Bugs were all over the place if you stopped. Not a soul on the trail today and only one trail at spur cross. The snowbirds are gone… :y:

Did the counterclockwise loop with Tortuga / Elephant Mountain / Spur Cross, and made it to the summit of Elephant Mountain as well. Interesting rock wall there, I’m assuming was leftovers from Native Americans?

Did the Elephant Mountain Summit hike today while I was in the area minus the Summit. Nice overcast today with decent temps. Parking lot was full when I arrived and the trails were busy!

I had not been hiking in Spur Cross yet this year, so we decided to go out and hike up to Elephant Mountain. To mix it up a bit, we started and ended the hike at the Jewel of the Creek Preserve.

We started by doing a semi-loop in Jewel of the Creek before heading to the Spur Cross Conservation area. We did a CW loop and stopped at the saddle below Elephant Mountain. We then scrambled our way to the Elephant Mountain summit. There was some steep and slippery scree to deal with, along with a short section of class 2+ climbing. There are great views at the summit, so at least there is a good payoff for the effort to get there.

There was a good bit of mud on the trail in the morning, and for a while I felt like I was hiking with ankle weights on. Fortunately, the mud was all gone on the way back. I guess that there was a decent amount of rain there last night, and I would not have gone out there this morning had I known that it was so muddy; but the mud sure dried up fast once the sun was out for a bit.

Had a listing appointment in New River today so on the way home I decided to go to Spur Cross and do this one. I have done the loop before but I don't believe I have ever gone to the top of Elephant Mountain. Perfect afternoon hike with great weather.

We'd had Chalk Canyon on our list for quite a while and decided to make that our main destination today. We started at Spur Cross Ranch Trailhead, and there was a lot more water in Cave Creek than expected...water levels were a lot lower in late December when we hiked to the Skull Mesa ruins, and I don't remember any significant rainfall since then. Regardless, it was nice to see.

It was mostly fast, pleasant miles on the hike to the ruins, with comfortable temperatures and a lot of wildflowers and birds. After we left Cave Creek Trail and approached the ruins site, we started to see increasing concentrations of pottery sherds and petroglyphs. One of the first petroglyphs we saw east of the ruins was a human figure with a zigzag pattern leading toward a spiral/circle of life engraved in the rock. Always fun to guess the meaning behind the drawings...

We spent some time exploring the ruins on the west edge of the mesa. We had the site to ourselves, and it offered a different perspective looking up at the ridge with the Skull Mesa ruins to the north. A lot of the walls were deteriorated at this site, but it was a large complex, and a few rooms had taller, more intact walls with some mortar still visible. One long, narrow room had a doorway made of white rocks that stood out from the darker ones that made up the other walls and virtually all the other structures, and it looked like rocks had been stacked loosely in modern times to block off the doorway for some reason.

After exploring the ruins, we dropped down off the west edge of the mesa toward the trail and Cave Creek below. It was a steep, loose descent in places, especially near the top, but we were able to avoid the brush almost entirely and saw more pottery and a few petroglyphs on the way down the slope. The area at the bottom was the highlight of the site, with an impressive concentration of petroglyphs and metates/rock slicks.

A set of three large boulders were covered in various petroglyphs on the tops and sides, and one vertical panel had one of the largest human figures I've seen, at 2+ feet tall. Others nearby had spirals and various symbols carved all over the flat tops. As we explored the area, we counted ~10 metates, several with grinding stones, and many more petroglyphs and pot sherds...a really nice area.

[ youtube video ]
[ youtube video ]

As we hiked back toward the trailhead, we took Metate Trail and checked out the namesake metates and the pool while dodging the crowds. Other than coming down the steep side of the mesa, it was quick, easy miles, and with a lot of afternoon remaining, we headed toward Elephant Mountain to see how far we could get with our remaining time. @TboneKathy waited below the saddle while I headed for the peak. I came up a little short, about a quarter mile from the summit, before I ran out of time and decided to turn around, but getting up as far as I did provided a nice vantage point to see the Elephant Mountain ruins on the ridge below, so it was a worthwhile effort even if I'll have to come back again to reach the peak.

[ youtube video ]

On the hike out, @TboneKathy nearly stepped on a Gila monster before seeing it at her feet...I don't usually think of those as blending in very well with their orange stripes, but she somehow missed it :). About a mile from the trailhead a helicopter was circling overhead, and we could see emergency vehicles with lights flashing in the parking lot. The helicopter landed over there and took off again and circled a few more times, and it continued repeating that cycle once we back and packing up at our vehicle. There were three fire trucks (one that said "Heavy Rescue" on the side) and two ambulances, and we weren't sure if it was an active rescue or a training exercise with the way the helicopter kept coming and going.

It was a fun hike, and the area below the ruins, especially, exceeded expectations. We had comfortable weather, great scenery, and the hike up to Elephant Mountain was a nice bonus that wasn't part of the original plan...and, fortunately, no Gila monsters were injured during the hike :).

We didn’t make it passed the creek crossing without getting wet. We took a couple mediocre turns on the way up and a much more solid route coming down the off trail portion. Not many people out until the last couple miles at the end.

New trail for me. I've never done Elephant Mtn. The sign said that the trail to the top was closed, but people were ignored the sign. I wasn't that inspired to reach the top. I looked for snakes on the way down and in certain areas, but it was too crowded. I did see one snake track, so they are out.

I was looking for a hike to do, and since the scramble to the summit on this one is as slippery as a politician, I figured that this would be a good hike for election day!

We did a CCW lasso loop hike. It was a warmer day than I was hoping for, so I was glad that we started early. The off-trail scramble up to the summit was a bit steep in places, but wasn't too bad. There was a bit of class 3 climbing that also wasn't too bad, notwithstanding some cactus and cholla that sometimes got in the way.

The 360 degree views at the top are really nice, so we spent a bit of time up there.

Once we got back on the Elephant Mountain Trail, the hike back was quite enjoyable.

It is really dry out there. If it had been a little cooler, I would have gone back on the Dragonfly Trail to check out the riparian area in the Jewel of the Creek Preserve....I'll save that for next time

I had never hiked up to Elephant Mountain before, and with the cooler temps I figured that today would be a good day to do it.

I wanted to start the hike at the Jewel of the Creek Preserve, and take the Dragonfly Trail over toward Elephant Mountain. However, the Jewel is still closed so I started from Spur Cross instead. I decided to do a CCW lollipop loop hike.

The hike up to the spur trail was pretty straightforward. There was a section with some ankle-busting lava rock, so I slowed down a bit for that. On the way up I saw about 8-10 javelina, but they weren't interested in posing for the camera.

The spur trail to the summit was much steeper and much more slippery than I figured it would be. Throw in some rock scrambling near the summit, and this one isn't for the faint-of-heart.

I thought that the views at the summit were outstanding!

It was a slippery descent in places back to the Elephant Mountain trail -- I was crabwalking down a few times.

Once I got back to the Elephant Mountain Trail, instead of returning the way I came I went south on the Elephant Mountain Trail and took it to the Spur Cross Trail, and went back to the TH that way.

On my way back I stopped once to take a picture, and discovered that my camera was missing. I had it attached to my belt, and while the carabiner holding the camera in place was there, the camera had somehow disappeared. I figure that the camera case must have twisted off the carabiner on one of the places where I was crabwalking down. I decided to backtrack a bit and go look for it, but I did not feel like going all the way back to the summit, so I decided to end my search...bummer...but it could have been worse: I could have lost my keys, billfold, or pocketknife.

With my backtracking while looking for my camera, I added a bit more distance and elevation gain than I would have had otherwise.

This is a fun summit with some great views, but if you are expecting a class 1 walkup on a nice well-groomed trail you will be disappointed.

This is the first time I had been in the area since I hiked up to Skull Mesa back in the winter, so I was overdue. I like this area and I should go out there more often. One thing that struck me was all of the vivid green leaves on the ocotillo -- the ocotillo in the McDowells have no leaves right now.

Bruce put this together in a flash. Having lightly pondered Apache Peak for many years I was in on that alone. Didn't know much about Elephant other than it didn't hold my interest. First I've been through New River. Unexpected agriculture parcels. Overall nicer than I figured. Still unsure I just looked at the boundary. Basically, I-17 to SR 51 & Carefree Hwy to Table Mesa Rd. Upper thirties to start late March seemed low as we'll be flirting with ninety degrees soon.

Apache was steeper than expected. Having learned on the hike in we had a large chunk of off-trail ahead I waited below the summit when it got uncomfortable. Most won't have an issue. Distant views are better than average.

Heading over to Elephant through more off-trail than anticipated I started having doubts. Without much reviewing I had visions of Sonoran Preserves bulldozed trails. 5 miles further North, boy I looked this hike over well... lol

This was more reminiscent of tackling Horse Mesa across to Bronco Butte. A big boy workout. Heading up wasn't encouraging either. We both failed miserably at throwing in the towel. Perfect weather, wildflowers galore and desire to get in a good full-day hike lured enough to where it would be ridiculous to turn around vs making it happen.

Lunch on Elephant Mountain 3,926 was darn nice. Cardinals Stadium to Weaver's Needle and beyond. Descending East after lunch made two things crystal clear. Cool terrain, for once I found Spur Cross vicinity intriguing. On the flip side, there will be no return since my balance requires safer footing.

8 easy miles back to square one on easy trail was mind-numbing at first. Turned out fine. Still not itching to go back. Definitely a great nearby full-day hike!

I was looking for a place that would be less traveled that we could both drive to.

I'd never hiked from the Spear S Ranch TH on 7th Street. 39 degrees and no cars in the lot at our 6:30 start. It's a nice trail to where we turned off to attack Apache Peak. There is a local "use trail" to the top, that has it's name carved into a rock. It's known as the Fathers Day Trail. Easy to follow and gets steeper and steeper to the top. The only tricky part is finding your same way down, through the break in the wall. Up top, a tattered flag and a mailbox.
[ youtube video ]

We dropped down to the saddle and then northish on another use trail. We lost it once. Off to attacking Elephant Mountain from the west. This was a slow process. Lots of up, prickly things and boulder hopping. Finally on top of the Elephant, the views are great in all directions. We had our lunch at a responsible distance.
[ youtube video ]

Exiting the peak to the east is a bit slippery and slow going. Interesting geology here.

We were happy to be back on a trail all the way back to the TH. We passed 4 hikers and 1 biker through 15 miles. the last 2 miles to the TH, we passed more.

This one zapped me. I always know is been a tougher hike when my shoulders are sore the next day.

Hiked Elephant Mountain Summit with my wife.

This one was a doozy! A friend of ours recommended Elephant Mountain to as a good, more serious sort of hike. We decided to give it a shot.

The initial part of the ascent follows a clear path that is a bit rocky but otherwise straightforward to follow and navigate.

At around 3 miles in things get very interesting. The trail to the summit leaves the main established trail and heads due east up the "spine" of the ridge. The terrain goes from standard established trail quality to treacherous fine gravel almost immediately. The surface material combined with the steep (and getting steeper as the ascent progressed) slope often perpendicular to the path of travel made this one a real challenge. The entire way up the thought that you will have to go back down that slippery trail is hanging in the back of your mind and making you question whether you should give up and turn back.

In the better established early sections the trail is somewhat concave. In these sections it is possible to "chimney" to keep from slipping. In other later sections the only option is to try to select larger embedded stones as footholds that are less likely to come loose and send you sliding down the mountain.

In addition to the difficult footwork, navigation became a bit more challenging as well. The trail is not well established and can be missed in washes and overgrowth. Two sections in particular posed a challenge.

Shortly after leaving the established trail the path approaches a wall (I think this is the "face" of the elephant). The correct route is to go along the right hand side of the wall until a section with a steep slippery ascent/traverse is found. From there the route is more straightforward following the "spine" of the elephant as best you can (straying to either side forces you to contend with a slippery traverse). The last navigational challenge comes nearly at the summit. Again you are faced with a steep wall that looks a bit too steep to be the intended trail. This time you have to work your way along the left hand side until you come to a slightly less high section that is more reasonable to climb up. After climbing this wall and avoiding several cactus growing in very inconvenient locations the summit is reached.

The view at the top was spectacular but it was fairly windy so we did not stay long, we wanted to start the descent even though we were dreading it. The descent was about as harrowing as expected but we got back to the established trail with only a few stops to remove cactus stickers from the seat of pants (after slipping and falling) and the soles of hiking shoes.

This was a very technically challenging hike. The steep sideways traverses combined with slippery sand/gravel surfaces made for a nerve wracking experience. The difficult portions also tended to be well populated with cholla which added insult to injury each time one of us made a misstep. It is possible the unusually wet winter and a lack of foot traffic made the trail more slippery than usual.

I would recommend this hike to anyone looking for a serious technical hiking challenge, but I'm not sure I would attempt it myself a 2nd time.

Abbreviated out and back hike along the Elephant Mountain Trail. It was a great day for a hike. It was around 64 degrees with blue skies and a slight breeze. Started in the parking lot and hiked up Spur Cross Trail .9 miles to where it splits with Tortuga trail (sat for a moment on the bench in the shade to quaff a little water). Hiked up the Tortuga trail another .64 miles to the split between Tortuga Trail and the Elephant Mountain trail. Followed the Elephant Mountain Trail about .16 miles to the point where it breaks left while the main trail continues forward toward the Tonto National Forest (sign at this point). Then hiked down the Elephant Mountain trail a short distance for a better view of the Mountain before turning around and returning to the trailhead.
NOTE: the trail is much improved since my last trek in June. At that time, the trail was deeply rutted and required more labored hiking. While the trail is still rocky in places, it is much more even. I suspect that the trail was grated some to even out the deep ruts that existed previously.
The desert is really green right now due to the heavy rains in the Fall this year. Brittlebush seedlings are everywhere and non-native weeds and winter rye grass are abundant too.

Brittlebush are heavily in bloom with swaths of their daisy like flowers on display throughout the Spur Cross area.

Great hike, albeit a little warm by the time we were finished (right at 100 degrees). We set out from the parking lot and trekked up Spur Cross past Tortuga Trail intersection and then up the Elephant Mountain Trail. Note: following the heavy rain in the mountains last weekend, the trail is pretty rough compared to normal conditions, i.e. lots of exposed rock going up and down. In spots, the man made steps are in place, but much of the surrounding dirt is gone making it more tricky to hike.
On the way up Elephant Mountain Trail, we stopped for a brief rest in a small bosque of mesquite trees and found an old water pump (see picture) - anyone know if it still works? We then finished the hike up to the summit and found the easy route up to the old indian fortress, which was pretty cool. Can't imagine a hostile tribe wanting to charge up the side of that hill with the local tribesman (offshoot of the HoHoKam?) manning the fortress - many of the walls still in place 800 years later (see picture again). On the way down the southside of the mountain we took the Spur Cross trail back until we reached the Dragonfly trail which took us to the Jewel of the Preserve area and then back to the parking lot. 15 minutes later - Circle K and Gatorade looked pretty good.

Well I had every intention to finally make it to the true summit!! Ugh, Once on the saddle I proceeded up the vaguely visible summit trail.
The trail up was pretty prickly and slippery. I made it within maybe 20 feet of the first rock peak but the wind being head on and so gusty it almost knocked me down. Since I was alone I decided to turn back. It was right there within reach but better to be safe. It will have to wait for another day.

3H - Group
A beautiful day for a hike! Cloudy and cool!
Joined 3H group for a meetup at Spur Cross to hike the Elephant Mountain Trail.
Some of us went to the top of the Elephant. It was work though! Beautiful up here!
If you like cactus and jagged rocks, you'll love scrambling your way to the summit. I love it!
I missed the summit registry up there, I guess I'll have to go back sometime.
Thanks to the friends who joined me on this trek. It was great fun exploring and encouraging each other as we went higher and higher. Definitely will go back! :y:
