I had some time to kill between appointments in Scottsdale and noticed Javelina Trailhead on the map near where I'd be, and that sounded more appealing than anything I else I could do for an hour. I ended up parking near 104th Street and decided I'd hike out for ~30 minutes and turn around to fill the available time I had.

I mostly stayed on Quartz Trail and hiked a short distance on Taliesin before I turned around...not enough time to get in far enough to anything even a little interesting or challenging. The parts of the trails I was on that pass through the wash with houses lining both sides make SoMo look like a remote backcountry wilderness, but I did see a deer on the hike out, and it was a good excuse to get outside and avoid passing the time with something like work :).

The majority of these trails within this lasso loop just aren't that aesthetic. Basically, hiking in washes between cookie-cutter houses and around a golf course below transmission lines.

I haven't been to this area or done these trails in over 10 years, so it was time to go back and check it out again. Hiked up the Lost Dog Wash Trail to the Taliesin Overlook, then hiked down to the Taliesin Trail and hiked all of that out to the Westworld Trail and then hiked back. The clouds were intermittent, so that helped keep it from getting too hot. It's definitely less humid now, which definitely makes it more pleasant. Looks like the trailhead has had significant improvements since the last time I was here. No wildlife of any interest seen. Saw more hikers than bikers.

Golf course to overlook and back. No other hikers, a few on bikes. So smoggy out there tonight, so didn’t take any sunset pics. Did kick down a cairn though.

After work run. Haven't been out here in years. In fact, it took me a couple of wrong turns to find the TH. Did a CW loop starting mid- Quartz, then took the Taliesin to Westworld which got to the beginning of the Quartz Trail which I took back to the TH. Kind of nice to revisit these trails, even though for the most part, they are underwhelming. The Quartz is the nicest of the three. It is sandwiched between subdivisions, but it is in wash for most of it so there is some intimacy. Taliesin, is pretty I have the same thing. Bordered by houses for most of it and a golf course at the western end. Westworld trail is not worth mentioning as far as trails go. Very un-scenic, unless you like golf courses and canal berms. Minimal elevation change, though the Quartz has a few mild climbs. No wildlife and no one else on the trails. Though I did follow a fellow HAZ hiker (window decal) on the commute home today. It's always nice seeing a "brother or sister" on the trails or on the road.

After nap - did a family hike from the house onto Paradise trail :next: Quartz :next: Taliesin (brief thought of going up to Taliesin overlook but was too late in the day to make it out by sunset) :next: McDowell Mtn Golf club parking lot.

We drove one car to golf club and then started hike from house. I like this method. Sometimes we have dinner at Mesquite Grill after hike - but not tonight. Caroline stopped to journal nature observations a few times. George loves being line leader and using a kid adjusted hiking stick.

End of afternoon post-nap hike alone. Went from front door to Paradise to Quartz up to the Taliesin Overlook -- was about 10 minutes before sunset. Hauled it back down and jogged Taliesin trail to the McDowell Golf Club parking lot.

Called Brad to come pick me up. He was at park with the kids. One friend saw me and asked if I needed a ride. Then I accidentally flagged down a random person thinking it was Brad.

Took exactly 1 hour 11 minutes to get to Taliesin overlook from house (same as Bell Pass other direction).

Light at the overlook just incredible - gorgeous.

While grandparents were in town for T'giving - - we went on a date hike to Quartz outcrop. Left from front door - through neighborhood gate - Paradise trail to Quartz and up to outcrop. Had lunch and relaxed - then back to Taliesin trail to the McDowell Mountain Golf Club parking lot. Had a car there to take us back home a few miles.

First hike we ever did in MSP was Quartz in 2005.

Wanted to take advantage of cooler temps with rain day before. Caroline has two school friends (boys) that have hiked to the Quartz outcrop - so it was on her Kindergarten-bucket-list  . George rode in the hiking house the whole time and I am not sure how Brad carried him up the last straight up stretch to the quartz outcrop. Caroline was so irritated at how slow we were getting to the top and then she loved climbing on the "white lava" as she called it of the quartz vein.

George brought his teddy with him and I bet there haven't been that many teddy bears on the quartz outcrop! We had a snack and looked up at Thompson Peak (which is now Caroline's new goal) - - and it clicked for her what those things are on top - for our cell phones. She has always called Thompson Peak "cake mountain" b/c it looks like birthday candles on a cake. So the illusion is gone but now the challenge is real. I think she could do it in the winter if I brought enough snacks and we stopped for breaks.

After the hike - home for lunch and nap. Nice to have so many trail so close to our house.

This was seriously the most annoying "hike" I've experienced in ages. To knock off some ATC segments, I had to take the Quartz up to West World and connect to Taliesin. All of these, of course, feature nothing more than golf cart paths and people's backyards.

To top it off, my dog Trixie and I encountered a hiker who had a large vicious dog that she was almost unable to control. As we crossed paths, her dog lunged at Trixie while snarling and the hiker had to all but tackle her to keep her from getting away. As a first-time dog owner, I now understand what people mean when they talk about what they would do if someone attacked their beloved little family member. If that dog had gotten away and come at us, I would have attempted to kill it unless it backed off. How exactly, I'm not sure. Maybe it's time to start packing.

Quartz trail was the first MSP hike that we ever did in 2005 (although I vaguely think there was Lost Dog in 2004 but I can't find any pics and it was before I was HAZ member to document).

Babysitter for the kids. Parked at McDowell Mtn Golf Club with no guilt because we eat there all the time. Picked up Taliesin trail under the bridge and then to Quartz all the way to wherever the "end" is. Hard to tell since no signs at the end. And there is an unbelievable amount of Fountain Grass in the last stretch - impossible to see where trail goes in some parts. Scares me to think what would happen in that area if there was a lightning or human induced fire.

Skipped the quartz outcrop and just stayed on the main trail. I had forgotten how gorgeous that back canyon is - especially with sun beginning to set. I keep hearing about this section of Quartz connecting up to Thompson Peak trail... but no definite plans in the works.

After dropping my daughter off at school, thought about where to go to hike. My intuition said quartz trail which is 5 min drive from school. Went to TH and took the trail to where it ends at golf course. Came back and went the other way to taliesin overlook. Saw fair amount of people.
After all the pictures I took of saguaro holes looking for owls, finally I saw one :y: :y: western screech owl. Initially looked like wood. Then I saw it's head move :D . As it was trying to sleep, other birds were waking it up...such as gila woodpeckers knocking the saguaro :) not sure how they can sleep daytime with all the noise.
Saw a few butterflies today but none posed for me :D
An awesome hike today :y: :D

ATC Challenge miles to date: 109/133

Date hike with Brad - I've dragged him into the ATC Challenge - and he observed that several of these remaining trails have neither physical challenge nor beauty. True. But dad-gum-it if you give me a challenge - I.will.finish.it!!!

My plan was to do the entire length of West World as a shuttle since it doesn't look like much of a trail from the pieces i've seen. I had three big miscalculations in my planning: (1) There's nowhere to park at the trail's end intersection with Cactus Rd, (2) Barrett Jackson is at West World, and (3) it's sprinkling rain off and on.

So we wasted some time driving around FLW Taliesin property trying to find somewhere mostly legal to park. No luck (although maybe we could have pulled into the service vehicle area by the canal at the top of the hill). So instead we parked at McDowell Mtn Golf Club and took Taliesin trail down to West World. I forgot that I needed that little stretch of Taliesin for ATC list anyway.

Saw a cool golf relic - sign for Sanctuary golf course saying stay off. WW trail is just as boring and awful as I suspected. Basically a service road for powerline vehicles. Only fun part was crossing over the canal. Went all the way to very end (intersection of Cactus Rd and FLW Blvd) and saw a planted palo brea on MSP land. Either planted or airborne since the neighborhood nearby has many of these. So now I can email Nature Guide leader of the Human Impact Study for McDowell Sonoran Field Institute to let her know there is at least one palo brea in the Preserve and it certainly got there by humans.

Then as sun was setting and starting to rain again - went back to the Golf Club and had dinner outside by the fireplace at Mesquite Grille. I'll finish the rest of West World sometime next week.

Date night hike and dinner. Parked at the McDowell Golf Club in our neighborhood. Picked up Taliesin trail just across the street from the parking lot. Took Taliesin until the intersection with Quartz. Then along Quartz Trail long enough to get to the unmarked turn for Quartz outcrop.

Watched beautiful sunset - light on the quartz was beautiful.
Back the way we came.
Dinner outside at The Living Room in DC Ranch marketplace.

Because MJ was returning merchandise to the shop at nearby Taliesin West, we picked this suburban trail out of the blue. Found only 2 triplogs, the one by mt98dew on July 4 was informative. Turned out to be a unique if unrewarding jaunt amid three subdivisions within McDowell Mountain Ranch and, for a while, along the edge of Sanctuary golf course.

Unique? It was the first time I've had to punch in a security code to get to a trailhead. The gate to Sonoran Fairways was closed. And if MJ hadn't called the "Open House" number to get the code, we would've been shut out. A better option, we later learned, would be to park at the McDowell Mountain Golf Club lot and walk across the street to pick up the trail at 106th Way and Sheena. After getting inside the gate, the TH, if you could call it that, was at the end of a cul-de-sac on Conieson Rd. No sign, only a faint trail leading off to the left through heavy brush.

The first trail sign appears near a corner of the golf course, which we arced around, then passed thru a tunnel under 106th Way and finally out onto the main trail.

Although it is within the Sonoran Mountain Preserve, it quickly became apparent this is a trail for nearby residents. As mt98dew pointed out, it is a nice trail for bikers and today, fairly busy. Also saw a couple of joggers and one other hiker.

Nothing interesting here on this strip of chaparral along a wash between Sonoran Estates and Sienna Canyon subdivisions. Houses are always visible at the sides of the trail. Surmise this is an attractive wildflower area come spring. We stopped for sandwiches at a shaded spot just off the trail with good views of the McDowell Mountains to the east.

At the high end of the Taliesin at 1,943' el by my GPS, it connects with two other trails including the Quartz, which I believe leads up high to Lost Dog Wash Trail.

It is one of those trails, that if it ever went away, I wouldn't care. For me, the Taliesin was a once in a lifetime moment.

With the park closures due to the holiday I had a challenging time coming up with a hike for today. Settled on doing a loop involving the Quartz, Taliesin, and WestWorld Trails. There is a trail access point just off of McDowell Mountain Ranch Rd and 108th st. Got there a little after 4pm, but there was no gate closures that I had to worry about. This access point connects you to the Quartz Trail. Did the loop going in a clockwise direction. - Quartz, Taliesin, WestWorld, and then back on the Quartz. The only trail that I did entirely was the Taliesin. This trail is an ideal bikers trail, as it does a lot of twists and turns. It also has a very gradual decline as it heads in a westward direction making it nice for jogging as well. The views aren't the greatest though, as it either borders a golf course or is boxed in by homes on either side. If you are going to this trail for scenic purposes it is much better to do it in an eastward direction....at least then you'll have the McDowell Mountains to look at. Didn't see a person or an animal during my entire jog.

My hike of this trail is accounted for in my triplog called "Taliesin Trail MSP, AZ" of June 19, 2010. This triplog has been made solely for the purpose of documenting my progress in experiencing the trails shown in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Mapped Area .
