Hiked Broken Arrow trail in Sedona with Dad, Margaret, and Victoria.

This was the last hike of our Holiday Sedona trip and our first time on this particular trail. There was a fair amount of 4x4 activity on the overlapping jeep trail. I prefer not to hike on these dual-purpose trails, but we needed something easier for my dad to be able to participate. This one wasn't too bad in that regard as there were only a few crossing points and the noise of engines was not present for most of the hike.

Dad had to turn back at the Devil's Dining room as fatigue was setting in. The trekking poles helped but were not enough and it was the 2nd hike of the day. Margaret, Victoria, and I continued on to Chicken Point.

The views at the point (and leading up to it) were pretty solid although the point itself was fairly crowded. Both the Jeep trail and the hiking trail end at this spot and so it is a natural point for people to congregate and take photos. With the low barrier to entry of the vehicles facilitating people who otherwise would not have made it this far in.

There were several spur trails off the main route that lead to other interesting rock formations. These may prove to be more interesting, and I will have to plan to explore these the next time we decide to do this trail.

I am now convinced that the best time to hike in Sedona is in the winter. The traffic situation is completely manageable and the occasional mist and snow only improves the aesthetics. We will have to make it a point to go up to Sedona when all the Phoenicians are enjoying "hiking season" in the Phoenix Metro area.

Do not attempt this route unless you know what you are doing. A couple section on the ridge required climbing with exposure to fatal drops on both sides.

I parked at the Broken Arrow TH at 8:30am. Temperatures were chilly, but not freezing. I began hiking west on Broken Arrow using Twin Buttes Trail to connect with Hog Heaven. I continued on Hog Heaven a little ways then bushwhacked up to the saddle following the ridgeline up West Twin Butte. There's a large cairn marking the summit.

By the time I got to the top, I was slowing down and starting to feel flu symptoms; my symptoms increased over the rest of the hike, and I was sick the whole following week. Anyways, I took a break to dangled my feet off the edge while watching people visit the church below. The views were unobstructed and quite impressive. Bring binoculars, lots of water, and a snack.

I continued on to the village. There's another section of climbing down and then back up with sheer drops on both sides. The village walls had mostly collapsed due to exposure, and it looked like the place had been backfilled at some point. I vaguely recall reading that it was partially excavated post 1950s, but I can't find where I read that. If anyone knows more about the village, please let me know.

I'd like to attempt the more difficult East Butte in the future.

I took the day off work to spend with my wife on our 32nd anniversary. We ended up heading to Sedona for a short hike on the Broken Arrow trail to Chicken Point and back. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. At least for me. I stopped to find a geocache on the way back and my wife continued. I made it back and she wasn't there. That was a bit disconcerting; who wants to lose his bride on their anniversary? There were a fair number of mountain bikers on the trail. I don't think I'd want to walk it on the weekend.

Day 2 afternoon hike: Tina had read about an interesting combo of Submarine Rock and Chicken Point; you add a Hog and you got yourself an awesome Sedona hike. After lunch we headed over to Broken Arrow TH for Part 1 to the Submarine Rock.  Luckily, there was ample parking.

There was a little jeep activity as we crossed the road and headed eastward on Broken Arrow Trail.  It's always fun to walk on and off the bedrock of these trails.  We paid our respects to the Bat Cave before continuing in and out of the high desert that had low pines and various cactus.  As we were walking across a large area of bedrock we could see this soft white grass in the distance.  It looked so smooth it seemed like you should be able to pet it.  The pictures don't really show its soft look.

The next thing that caught our attention were these little round vibrant green mounds of some sort of plant or tree.  They look like little rounds of tall grass moss but they aren't.  GL couldn't pin down an identification I was happy with so hopefully someone here can chime in.  We continued into the forest as we rounded the north and east sides of the Sub.  A couple times the trail more or less disappears or you end up on bedrock and have to look around a bit.  We finally made it to the stern end but boarded Submarine Rock from the starboard side.  It was a bit windy but we enjoyed our time as we made our way to the sail/bow.  Rather than exiting where we boarded I found us a little crevice to get down and we headed on back to the junction we would take to Chicken Point.

As we headed south on Broken Arrow Trail Deborah got a phone call from a friend that had relocated to Spain so she took that call as we hiked to Chicken Point. She was on the call all the way to the Point.  As usual, there was lots of traffic, people and vehicular and bikes.  Soon we were in the shade of the Twin Buttes where we came to the next junction to the Hogs that we would take on the third leg of our hike.  Now Tina had an issue with a deposit for her son's college in Canada, so she was texting regarding that until we got to Chicken Point.  Fortunately, we were able to keep moving and there was no need to be in a hurry.  We arrived at what I call the false summit as you have to make one more pass through a forested section to an area that overlooks Chicken Point.  Then it's down and over to Chicken Point.  It was pretty crowded but we were able to get our pictures.

And now for part 3 of our hike, we headed north on Broken Arrow Trail for High on the Hog.  We were totally in shade now and it was a little bit chilly.  High on the Hog Trail was a little dicey in areas and once again, Tina was hiking on a ledge but we all had fun and enjoyed the challenge.  Once we got over to a slightly steep down section with great construction it dawned on me I had done this trail with Kelly (back in 2016).  We all made it down and admired our environment and its little challenges.  We appreciated those bike riders that tackled this one way trail for them.

We did spot some ice over on the hillside before arriving at the Twin Buttes Trail intersection where you initially swing east.  Well this trail continued to deliver on Sedona's hiking beauty.  We even ran into some more ice.  We got a closer view of a big white spot on the rocks that you can see from the Hyatt (looks like a waterfall).  We learned the following morning (while on our Palatki Ruins tour) that it is calcite or calcium (I can't remember which) deposits that we saw.  This area has lots of trees including Arizona Cypress.  We passed by a drainage that had what was frozen water as there was still a little ice. The Twin Buttes was definitely the icing on this cake, a delightfull surprise.

This was a great Triple Threat and needless to say, a great place to take your hiking friends.  I don't think I kept my phone camera idle very much; took lots of movies and pictures... so did Tina.

From Mystic Trail TH, hiked a loop counterclockwise. Started on Mystic Trail, then Hog Wash Trail, then Hog Heaven Trail, then Twin Buttes Trail, then Broken Arrow Trail (passing Devil's Dining Room), then Little Horse Trail, then Chapel Trail to the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Visited the chapel a while, then took Chapel Road back to the trailhead.

Guru went back to Phx, Ambika had to work so we only had time for a sunset hike once again; altho I did the Brins Mesa Loop in the AM on my own. That little drive into Broken Arrow TH is a tad rough. We headed on out to find the Submarine. I hadn't been on the Submarine since May 22, 2016 with Kelly when we did the Twin Buttes Loop. The trail takes you through typical Sedona landscape including on large areas of bedrock. The local flora seemed fairly healthy except for the occasional dead trees/dried bushes we've seen while here. We were wondering if frost and/or bugs has caused this.

On our way to the Sub we only ran into a hiker with her young dog, otherwise no other hikers/nor bike riders along this hike. We made our way to nearly the back of the Sub and boarded. Other jeep passengers were also aboard as we walked around. The views from here are quite nice of course so we soaked that all in as we made our way NW on the Sub. I got this one picture from one end as Ambika walked toward me and she looks like a little spec; that's how big this Sub is :o .

We got our fill and headed back to the TH while it was still light out. The jeepers were still out and about too altho we wouldn't see them on our trip back to the TH. We saw some hikers above us; assume they were doing the Hogs. There is also this white spot that I could see from the Hyatt that I zoomed in for a photo. Can't tell what it is; looks like it's been painted. This was a nice little hike.

Back at the Hyatt, from our balcony we not so patiently waited for the moon to come up behind the ridge directly in front of us. It took its sweet time and was pretty amazing. Neither of our phone cameras could really capture the scene correctly though so that was disappointing.

Its definitely a party in the Broken Arrow area. Started out with Submarine Point since we had been to Chicken Point once already. We followed the official route that Route Scout imported. At the top, I was able to count 8 pink jeeps at once. On the way back, we asked the 4 year old if she wanted to go to chicken point, too, which she indeed wanted to. Pretty pleased the 4 year old willingly knocked out a 5 mile hike.

Friend suggested going to Sedona on Saturday, and suggested starting at the chapel and heading out towards Chicken Point and Broken Arrow. I've driven the Jeep out there a few times but hadn't seen it on foot, so decided to give it a go. Didn't realize you can't (legally) pass through the Chapel parking lot until 9am, so we started on Mystic instead. Temps were cool in the morning, but warmed up quickly when the sun came over the horizon.

At the top of Hog Heaven (which was a cool trail), we noticed a social trail heading to the south, which I guessed would head to the ridge connecting the two buttes overlooking the area north of Bell Rock. Decided to head up it, and the view turned out to be fantastic, and easily the best of the day. Looked like you could get to the high point to the east with some scrambling.

After Hog Heaven, we headed up to Broken Arrow, where we started seeing people. Stopped by the Devil's Dining Room, and made a side trip to Submarine Rock, before heading to Chicken Point. After taking a little break above Chicken Point, we checked out the first half mile or so of Jim Bryant, which has a much more "wilderness" character (MTB aren't allowed). I might come back and check out the rest of that trail at some point.

Feeling a little hot and hungry, we turned around and made a beeline back to the car via Little Horse and Chapel. Not a bad area, like pretty much anywhere around Sedona.

Hike with our friends Rich and Sue who we met going down the S. Kaibab Trail in 2005. We have vacationed with them every year since. Nice that they have a second home in Oak Creek Village😊.

Parked along the road at Mystic Trailhead. Loop included Mystic, Hog Wash, Hog Heaven (went wrong way on this double diamond mountain bike trail), High on the Hog, Broken Arrow, Little Horse, and Chapel. Did not seem like that many trail junctions! Judy and I have done many many hikes in Sedona and we’d rate this as one if the best. A+ scenery, spectacular views, lots of up, down and around well marked trails.

Zelda, the Boston Terrier and Kai our Flat Coat loved being off leash. Both are excellent with verbal commands and we always ask if other hikers are “OK with the dogs off leash”.

Beautiful, scenic loop just outside Sedona. We were treated to Pink Jeeps and Land Crusiers banging their way through Broken Arrow. We timed the hike just right to get to the Chapel of the Holy Cross just after it opened. Excellent breakfast at Red Rock Cafe afterwards.

this is the one i couldn't wait for. modified the Bruce/Joe loop by tagging on some excellent additional trail miles and circling around behind cathedral. there was a big storm front moving in that evening so i knew i was on the clock a little bit for this one.

started off messing around up on the beautiful bell rock. went up the lower chute and decided in the interest of time (ie storm) to call it there, for this trip. i will be back for the top one day. scrambled down and around on courthouse butte. took a minute to figure out the unmarked loop out to the rabbit ears. the way out is a bit of a rocky slog, but once you hit the high point, loop around to magnificent view of the rabbit ears and bring it home on the much more entertaining northern leg, this becomes a much more worthwhile excursion!

scenic traverse on llama and little horse over to chicken point for the next high yield part of the hike. views from chicken point are always wonderful. broken arrow is great, then the absolutely fantastic high on the hog and hog heaven trails. man i love these two trails. completed the loop around the mountains on hog wash, mystic and chapel trails. headed back to 179 then crossed under it on little horse and the surprisingly nice HT trails.

next up was probably my most anticipated part of the day looping over to, up/down, then around cathedral. the templeton trail is underrated in my opinion and the segment from HT to cathedral junction, i found to be lovely. this is when the weather really moved in. i contemplated bailing on going up/down cathedral since i've done it numerous times. instead i decided to just put on my bobby rockets and blast up and down. more templeton awesomeness to the creek, then short but sweet crossover on baldwin to the Hiline trail. Folks, we have another sedona winner with the Hiline Trail. completely awesome trail, with sections remniscent of the hogs/hangover. the weather was pretty crazy at this point so i had to keep it moving, but this was really outstanding. i had earlier notions of adding a few extra miles at the end with looping made in the shade and slim shady, but it was pretty clear it was time to call it a day. and i was getting sick of the wind at this point too. ha

outstanding big day out there, without that many people all things considered. my gps screwed up on me for a while on the little horse and broken arrow trails, so the numbers associated with my gps route are not right (a little too low, especially the elevation). for those interested, the route is good though.

Best when the creek is running. Some will bicker it parallels a road popular with jeep tours. Snazzy views regardless.

Hangover Trail
Clockwise for a change offered new views. Either direction is outstanding.

Broken Arrow Trail #125
Old school tourist attraction until you discover High on the Hog & Hog Heaven put it to shame.

Submarine Rock
Nice to swing by after a good twenty years. Jeep tours eat it up. Lots of people exploring upon arrival. We lunched. Shockingly just one guy on vessel as we departed the voyage.

Turkey Creek Trail #92
Easily ten times better than my extremely low expectations. Glad I did it, might hit it again someday. Tough to suggest with a slew of world class hikes nearby.

Joe had us hunting for holes in the ground in Sedona. He mapped out 3 hikes to hit 3 of the 6 or so Sinkholes up there.

First up was my favorite hike in Sedona. The Munds Wagon Trail/Hangover Trail Loop. I've done this one numerous times, as I like to show off Sedona to out of town guests with this one. A CW direction for the first time yielded different views. The "Sinkhole" on this one we'd passed withing 100' of every time before, not knowing it was there. Without knowing what you were looking for, this one is easily missed. Tight to get to it, but it appears to open into a 4' tall x 10' wide x 30' deep cave. I crawled down to the mouth of it, but did not go in.

Next up was the Broken Arrow Trail to Submarine Rock Trail. This was a first time on this one for me. This sinkhole was much more impressive, easy to find/hard to miss, but also fenced to keep us riff raff safe. This one was about 40' x 40' and not sure how deep. Submarine Rock was actually pretty cool. When we got there we shared the rock with the contents of 4 pink jeeps. After lunch, when we left, we had it to ourselves.

The final destination on the day was another new Sedona destination. The Turkey Creek Trail was never on my radar. Sinkhole #3 put it there. The sinkhole, a hundred or so feet off the trail, was also fenced off. This one's opening was about 25' x 15'. It skinnyed down to a 4' x 8' opening to the darkness below.

The rest of this trail was pleasant, with the highlight being the saddle after the climb. Great views from a different angle of Sedona.

This was my last hike on Friday. Parked at the Broken Arrow TH. Getting back to the TH on the dirt road is a little worrisome. The dirt road is very rough, but luckily you don't need to go very far to get there. It is doable for a low clearance car. Got on the trail right around 2:30 and I was met with the sounds of drums - think Indian drums - coming from the hills. Kind of ironic because the name Broken Arrow makes me think of the classic western starring James Stewart. :) This trail is all about the rock monoliths and unfortunately the ability to drive your vehicles all over them. 3pm is a busy time. I saw almost as many vehicles (pink jeeps, SUV's, ATV's) as I did hikers. Definitely a detraction and something that I will remember and plan for the next time I hike in the area. Enjoyed the Devil's Dining Room. Though it would have been nice to see deeper in the hole. I wasn't aware that was part of the "trail experience" until the trail went by the fenced area. Chicken Point looked very nice. But when I arrived, there were already 3 Pink Jeeps and a SUV parked there with 25 people milling about. Very nice short trail, but beating the crowds (vehicles) would have made it much more enjoyable.

A pleasant outing up into a small canyon, then along the eastern base of Twin Buttes and returning via Devil's Dining Room. All trails in great shape. Lightly traveled this weekday afternoon. Routes can be difficult to follow across slickrock sections; keep eyes out for large basket cairns and those ubiquitous pink jeeps.

Ah..first trail run in a wind tunnel.

We were supposed to get snow Christmas day so I wasn't sure I could get a run in that day. So even though it was overcast and the the winds were supposed to be in the high 20s, I decided to go for a trailrun. :y:

The forecast called for rain at around 11am (halfway through my run) but didn't actually get some precipitation until after 12nn. Saw a few groups of hikers already going down on my way up Chicken Point and only saw 2 other groups at Broken Arrow.

Winds were supposed to be in the high 20s, I thought no big deal. :o
By the time I made it up to Chicken Point things got real. I had to run after my cap about 20 yards after the wind blew it off my head (time to wear it under the hood?). Reminded me of the summit of Wheeler Peak those gusts.
instagram.com/p/BOc ... nenk (warning if you are wearing headphones you might want to turn it down a little bit). No debris though for the duration of the run. Winds eventually calmed down at the juncture of Chapel Trail. I saw only 1 other group of hikers going up as I was going down. The guy had a tripod..wonder how that photo shoot turned out. :D

The trail was not muddy at all, just nice and cushy beneath my feet. Surprisingly there were a few Pink Jeep tours out on the trail that day. I did not see any at Chicken Point by the time I was heading back.
Clouds were big and gray, sun peeking just slightly, it snowed later that afternoon.

first time on this trail. we went out to chicken point (stunning), then did an out and back on High On the Hog (spectacular) and on the way back hit Submarine Rock. great network of trails in this area. loved it

as is typical in sedona everything is well signed and easy to follow. all kinds of possibilities to make loops out here
