Apparently the good doctor from tucson decided to make this qualify as a peak so I decided it would be fun to rub Jack off my list. :y:

It was 95 leaving town predawn. Still 85 in Green Valley. Didn't drop into the 70s until entering the recreation area. Somehow a delightful 68 a the trailhead. A bit humid on the climb to the saddle. At the last minute we decided to do the quick out-n-back to Wrightson before continuing on the Jack loop.

About 16 separate hikers were making the early ascent and we managed to get ahead of all but one of them. After a nice break on the 63-degree summit we encountered all of them between there and the saddle.

It has rained plenty on the range this year, and the summer growth of was prolific. Convective clouds began to build over the peak and it seemed we had gotten our timing right. Cloudiness tempered any heat buildup on the return until the buildup moved to the south without giving us any rain.

After the side trip to Baldy2 we continued on the main loop, making sure to take the side trip to Jack. The trip down Carrie Nation was steep and generally rough on my feet at this point in the day. Temps here finally regained the 80s, which had been expected, but was surprisingly nice to have been as cool for as long as it had been. There was water in the creek below the spring, with some pools and light flow in places, along with some dry stretches.

The parking lot was 92, and it was over 100 less than 2 miles down the road. Still quite a nice little mountain break on an otherwise insanely hot day. (It was 50 degrees higher when we got home : rambo :  [-( ) Thanks 9L for driving!

Springbox was dry and appears to be permanently nonfunctional. Just 50 feet up the drainage from the trail were ample pools of clear water and a trickling cascade from above.

Went up Vault Mine, bypassed Carrie Nation to head up Jack's and then backtracked to Carrie Nation to return. Fairly uneventful hike. Saw some fresh bear scat, large prints and once or twice a musky bear-like oder wafted over the trail, but we didn't see anything.

I'm no birder, but can recognize about 10 different birds. Know enough that I caught a good glimpse of a few Montezuma Quail running up the trail near the parking lot. Bumped into a few birders taking a survey on the way down and they got excited to learn that there were a few in the area.

up vault mine across to jack and down carrie nation

nice and cloudy but with high high humidity so it was a sweat fest. going up vault mine killed me per routine. agua caliente was brialliantly beautiful like always. the route up to jack is pretty obscure now but it is easy to get up there. some of the trees are about 15 feet now! crazy. down carrie nation, i wasn't thinking and took the rockier descent by the old cabin instead of the piney canyon switchbacks (which i strongly prefer).

great short hike. lot of flowers. i only saw a couple people way down low, otherwise had the place to myself

Did a new variation of the loop. Up Vault Mine to Agua Caliente, bypassed Carrie Nation to snag Jack's Peak. Then backtracked to Carrie Nation and descended back to the car from there. Almost perfect weather and bypassed all of the high winds. It was beginning to howl on Jack's Peak and I could hear it from my vantage point. Then had a hard time keeping between the lines on the drive home, it's pretty blustery today.

Tucson has always been a hiking town, but compared to Phoenix they all seemed to sleep in. So if I got to a trailhead at 6 AM, chances were that I was the first or second car in the parking lot. Got to Madera Canyon right at 6AM and noticed half the spots along the top row of parking were already full. Trail conditions were dry & dusty, we need rain.

Lots of birders out this morning and when they found out where I was, were peppering me with questions about if I saw the pair of nesting Elegant Trogons near the Carrie Nation mine site. Had to let them down and admit that I wasn't paying attention.

up super trail to josephine saddle. took josephine canyon trail down to the road and followed that to a confluence of a couple dirt roads where there was an abandoned car parked crazily on the hillside, on a spare with open trunk and windows. didn't look like it had been there long. saw the crosser on the way back up.

i kinda forgot how nice josephine canyon is.

took agua caliente out to jack mountain then continued on to vault mine and took that down

got to madera at about 710. there was still ample parking. it was a beautiful day in the santa ritas

Joined a friend who was hunting for the elegant tragoon. Gave her a 15 min head start so she could hide among the heaps of other birders we saw. Caught up with her at the Carrie Nation mine. Where it appeared some others had spotted one as they were talking so loud and carrying on that my friend gave up her hunt. Finished the loop with only encountering 1 other person
Yay... its getting old trying to find out of the way places without stumbling over people lately. Nice loop steep on the route down. I'm sure I'll be back

Wanted to get Wrightson and Josephine and added in Jack Mountain for good measure. Won't be doing any long hikes next week with family in town, so I wanted to get the most bang for my buck.

Started up Old Baldy at 5am. Second car showed up as I finished the long walk up the parking lot. Went straight up Old Baldy to the summit. The ascent is as gradual and relentless as I remembered. Made it up in two hours. Views were hazy, especially north and east.

Came down from the summit as the clouds pulled away. The whole walk from Baldy Saddle to Riley Saddle was sunny and warm. Passed an older couple from Green Valley by Baldy Saddle. I hope that I'm still able to summit Wrightson at their age.

Lot of bear scat on Super before Riley Saddle. At Riley Saddle the Nogales Ranger Dist. has put up a few orange signs saying that since the Florida Fire in 2005 no trail repairs have been made except unsanctioned trailwork, for which there is a price to pay. The signs say expect a crosscountry bushwhack. There is a use trail to the summit that is easier to follow on the way down than up. Lots of deadfall, and what trail there is is overgrown. Pretty much as advertised. Slow going. Climbed up a little chute on the outcropping before the peak, and at the top there was a small cave. Not sure how bears work, but I figured they use it at least to hibernate. In the summit register there was a group in the winter who wrote that they saw a bear hibernating in the cave, so that settles that.

Super trail and back saw no one until Josephine Saddle. Headed up Agua Caliente to Jack Mountain. Took a ridge up, should've waited for the spur. On top there were thousands of ladybugs, which made up for the lack of views.

Took Super back from Josephine and passed two groups of hikers. Never seen so few people on a trip up Wrightson. Six cars in the lot at the finish.

Looked at the weather yesterday afternoon and it looked like a low of 80 at 5 AM around here. Started looking around for a two hour hike in cooler climes and this caught my eye. May be doing a lot more in the Santa Rita's, drive time to the trailhead is 55 minutes which is a lot faster than getting up Mt. Lemmon. Will probably be a hot one today, at 5:15 AM the trailhead for Old Baldy was already 72 degrees.

Passed a couple people right off the bat and pretty much had the entire loop to myself the entire way. Directions are spot on and never once had to pull out Route Scout to figure out where I was. Saw a lot of bear scat today and pretty sure I heard a bear crashing through the woods, but didn't see them.

One thing I'm impressed with is running into a few guys prepping for the upcoming deer season. Tend to be overweight and they are rucking around the Santa Ritas with a 30-40 pound pack to get ready for the fall. What a workout.

Went out with a friend to check out a couple of mines and mark Jack Mountain off the list. Not much to Jack Mountain, but hey, it's a peak.

Took the Carrie Nation Trail up, visiting the Carrie Nation mine on the way up. Then connected onto Agua Caliente Trail to the Jack Mountain turnoff, and back down Agua Caliente to the Vault Mine Trail, hitting the Vault Mine on the way down. Nice day out.

perfect day for this hike. got out of my car at relatively deserted roundup TH to the gobbles of the turkeys somewhere in the canyon. decided to go up carrie nation to the agua caliente trail (perhaps my 2 favorite santa rita trails?). found and watched a silent and beautiful trogon near the mine. this is probably now my 15th sighting or so, and i have gotten pretty good at figuring out a couple specific spots they like in particular over the years. hit up good old Jack mountain for my yearly visit (at a minimum). the route up there is getting more and more faint. enjoyed the fabulous agua caliente trail over to vault mine. had the pleasure of spotting and getting buzzed by a twin spotted rattlesnake on one of the rockfalls. i believe that is the third one of those i have seen in the santa ritas. quick and steep trip down the vault mine trail sealed the deal.

as always this is a VERY high yield short hike in the santa ritas.

Another Madera Canyon Meander..
Decided to start this hike a little lower down Madera Canyon than the usual location at the end of the road. I had never done the upper portion of the Nature Trail, so this was from the Amphitheater parking area. The trail promptly climbs up above the canyon to avoid private property. The result is some nice views before it drops back down into the riparian corridor and skirts by the Chuparosa Inn before reaching the Mt. Wrightson Picnic Area (Roundup). You can stay in the creek bed and avoid hiking along the usual route to the Old Baldy turnoff from the parking lots, reuniting with the Vault Mine/Carrie Nation Mine trail near the bench.

The trail up to Carrie Nation Mine is through a beautiful section of forest with plenty of shade. Gets steep in places, but what else is new? Since the monsoon storms are just beginning, the creek was dry except for a few seeps and a little flow at the mine. I heard trogon(s) several times along the hike, but as is usual, no sightings (elusive little devils). Encountered several birders on the way to Carrie Nation, as this is a real nice section for that activity (away from the more crowded Super & Old Baldy Trails).

On the way back down I decided to walk the road to my vehicle instead of returning on the Nature Trail. Reason was the cloud cover I enjoyed earlier was now gone and there would be more elevation gain that way with plenty of exposure. Plus, the road is a bit shorter and all downhill. I enjoyed passing by some of the lodging along the way.

Across the road from the Amphitheater parking lot is another access point for the Four Springs Trail to Kent Spring and beyond (with connectors to Bog Springs and the campground). One of the things that makes this area so appealing is the multitude of loop hike combinations available. :)

Before flying out of town on biz, I decided to squeeze in a hike. Only in my backyard Ritas could I pull off such a nice loop AND still make it to the airport in time. The primary objectives were twofold: PR to J-Saddle and then bag Jill Mountain. Icing on the cake would be having time to bag Jack Mountain as well and/or return loop style via the Agua Caliente (AC) & Vault Mine Trails.

Although still really struggling to attain, [or rather re-attain], the fitness/health parameter that is most important to me, my speed, strength and endurance have miraculously managed to improved. My new [intense, but non-race pace] PR of 41:19 to J-Saddle via Old Baldy confirmed that not all has gone to pumpkin. The new PR smashed my previous one by a full 3 min & 15 sec.

After taking a well-deserved few min. break at J-Saddle, I set off to bag Jill Mountain, which proved to be beyond easy… there is a well-defined spur trail/route that takes off right from J-Saddle [just look to the left of the AC Trail and it should be obvious]. Within just a few minutes, the route leads you to the summit of Jill Mountain. I did not see a register, and most of the views are completed obstructed by trees, but it’s definitely more fun than sticking to the trail, and there are a few nice views of Mt. Hopkins between the trees.

Instead of retracing my steps, I proceeded to follow a route that continues from Jill Mountain toward Jack Mountain. Due to very thick brush in some places, going in a straight line was not always possible; and, for a good part of the short way from Jill to Jack, the brush was thicker than ideal for bee/snake season. I made it to the summit of Jack Mountain uneventfully; however, [just like the last 3 times], I was greeted by lots of buzzing/flying bees. They never chased or swarmed me, but I keep the summit visit very brief to be safe. Unlike Jill Mountain which has no views due to the surrounding trees, there are some very beautiful views from Jack Mountain.

Although I was tempted to follow a route leading off Jack Mountain in the direction of Mt. Hopkins, the combination of being pressed for time AND the many buzzing bees led me to play it safe and take the very well-beaten in route from the Jack Mountain summit back to the AC Trail. The AC is very beautiful, and this is the first time I recall having taken it in the direction of J-Saddle to the junction with the Vault Mine Trail… [and the first time I recall having gone down the Vault Mine Trail for that matter]. Call me crazy, but I actually enjoy going up the Vault Mine Trail and have done so many times. Though after setting a new PR up to J-Saddle, I thoroughly enjoyed the well-deserved elevator ride down the Vault Mine [aka Very Steep] Trail.

Back to parking area with a few minutes to spare, I took off a very short ways down the Super Trail and then looped back to the parking area via a random drainage in order to get in 7 miles for the day.

It was an awesome adventure for a work day… and I made my flight in time.

Work took me to Green Valley today, so that put the Santa Ritas right at the top of the docket! I hiked up Mt. Wrightston a few months ago and really enjoyed it, so this was an easy choice. I got started hiking a bit after 3 so I knew I would not have time for the big guy, as good as that may have sounded. I did this loop clockwise, up the Old Baldy trail to the Josephine saddle. I got off on the wrong trail here, I started getting suspicious after I lost a few hundred feet of elevation, I am pretty sure I was on the Josephine Canyon trail. Nice trail, but a bit overgrown and some downed logs. I got myself turned back around and onto the Agua Caliente trail. There were some nice views off the ridge, but the wind was howling pretty fiercely any time I was not protected by a slope face. There were a few overgrown spots, and the Jack Mountain spur took a little negotiating, but certainly nothing too crazy. I made the switch from short sleeve and ballcap to long sleeve and beanie up top to keep my warm enough. I found the Carrie Nation trail pretty easily and headed down. Very steep on the way down, but footing was good except for a few spots heavy with pine duff.I got back to the van about 5:30 for the long, windy drive home. Saw a few does on the drive out, but otherwise there was not much wildlife to be seen, I expected aas much due to the high winds all afternoon. I didn't see any bears this trip, must mean that the bear spray I bought works, right? This hike is a great alternative to Wrightston if you do not have as much time, good push for sure with some nice views to boot. Good water flowing all along the Carrie Nation trail too.

This was a nice late fall hike without getting into anything too strenuous. Trails include the Carrie nation Trail, Jack Mountain Trail and Madera Canyon Nature Trail. I've lived in Tucson all my life and have never been on any of these trails. Usually doing some of the more lengthy trails. Really liked the Carrie Nation Trail with it's Carrie Nation Mine and Mining equipment. Lots of history on this trail. The Carrie Nation trail is quite a work out, not long but very steep toward the end. The side trip to Jack mountain from Auga Caliente Trail (.1 mile) was worth it for the views of Mount Wrightson, Florida Ridge and Mount Hopkins.

Headed back down the way I came and then headed South down Madera Canyon along the Nature Trail. This is a nice easy gently sloping trail. One of those trails you don't admit doing but since I did the strenuous Carrie Nation trail along with this I can admit it here. Nice views of Florida Ridge and mount Wrightson.

Thought I might try to head up to Wrightson, but would make my decision when I got to Josephine Saddle. By the time I got there, I decided against the big hike and figured I would head back down on the Super Trail to complete the loop. But, then I changed my mind and decided to go to Jack Mountain and back down past Carrie Nation Mine instead. I had been to Jack Mountain once before, probably in 2002 with SAHC. It is just a short side trip off the Agua Caliente Trail (the route obviously doesn't see much traffic as it is really overgrown). I knew with the abundance of water everywhere these days it would be impressive along the creek from the mine back to the junction with Old Baldy Trail. It was! :D

I took the alternate route down to the mine that passes the old cabin/camp site. As I neared the mine the sound of the water kept getting louder. I had to do some bushwhacking to get some of the pictures along the creek, but it was worth it of course. Also it was a challenge to keep the feet dry with all the stream crossings in the section from the mine to the junction with Vault Mine Trail. Glad I decided to go back this way instead of the usual Super Trail choice! :)

No such thing as a routine hike! This one involved a bear sighting and my coming to the aid of a German tourist.

My route was to go up the Baldy Trail to the Josephine Saddle. There was a hikers' traffic jam up there, including one particularly rude group from another country that I won't name that was blaring bad music from a cheap stereo during their hike. I love the country; not such a fan of that specific group. Anyway, the crowd and their absurd noise completely disappeared once I headed west on the Agua Caliente. The description is accurate in referring to the beauty of Caliente. It was a bit narrow at times, and steep, by my standards. A misstep wouldn't have meant death, but it definitely would have meant a fatigue-drawing, scratched-up scramble back up to the trail.

From the Caliente, I connected with the Old Vault Mine Trail and started heading back to the trailhead. With about 1 mile to go, I heard a human voice yelling out from somewhere behind me. This was the first sign of another person I'd seen since the Josephine Saddle. I initially guessed from the tone that it was just someone calling out to a friend. But I then heard the yelling increase in urgency, and there were no responses, so I decided to call back. A man with a European accent yelled something to me about "a bear." Through more yelling back and forth, I tried asking him some questions: was he okay, which trail was he on, what direction was he heading, where did he spot the bear, and what direction was it headed?

He wasn't sure of some of the answers, and I detected some anxiety in his voice. So, I suggested to him that he should simply walk back to the trailhead, and he and I would keep within voice contact of each other. I guessed that he was on the Carrie Nation trail, patting myself on the back for having properly studied the area topos for my pre-hike due diligence. I was right. I soon spotted him as the Old Vault and Carrie trails converged. I bushwhacked for just a minute or two and joined him. He was relieved and glad to see me, and frankly so was I because I didn't want a bear encounter while solo.

My German friend had been taking photographs of lizards, while wearing flip-flops and armed only with his camera. Suddenly, a bear with brownish fur, that I assured him was probably nonetheless a black bear, startled him from about 10 yards away. From his description, the bear seemed curious for a moment, and then took off running in the opposite direction. So, no real danger. But in my opinion he was absolutely correct to follow his fear instincts. He was hiking alone, with no bear spray and no weapons.

We enjoyed a good chat during the walk back to the parking area. What amazed both of us were the reactions of other hikers (well, so close to the trailhead they were mostly “walkers”) to our warnings of a bear sighting just half a mile away. Maybe my bear "training" from Denali and the months I spent in Alaska have put an irrational, irreversible fear of bears into my veins, to abnormal levels? But I stand by my position: if a bear is spotted in the area, you must leave the area immediately. That means cancellation your planned hike if there's only one direction to walk in. But of the approximately 10 hikers we warned, only one couple seemed remotely concerned and expressed an desire to be cautious and not proceed much further. The others ranged from apathetic, to cocky, to confused why we were even bothering telling them. "I see bears out here all the time. Not a big deal," one said.

We had a bear fatality in Arizona within the last couple of years, if I remember correctly. A perfectly pleasant urban stroll by a 60-year-old woman walking her dog resulted in the unprovoked fatal attack. Bears sit on TOP of the food chain when we are in the wilderness, unless arguably we arm ourselves with bear spray or a high caliber handgun. But even that requires immediate access to the spray and/or expert gun handling skills that most gun owners don't have. Otherwise: Bear v. Human = bear wins. Am I missing something here? Am I the weird one?

Spotted: a horned toad, many colorful lizards of a species I'll figure out soon, birds with blue feathers, and a big scary bear.
