I decided to hike up to Peak 5057 today; this is probably the 15th time that I have been up there.

We did an out-and-back from the Hieroglyphic TH by going up and down through Hieroglyphic Canyon.

It was mostly a cool, cloudy, and breezy day, although the sun would occasionally come out and warm things up.

As others have reported, there was a lot of heavy fire damage all along the ridgeline from Hieroglyphic Canyon over to 5057. I wonder how much erosion that there will be along the trail whenever some heavy rainstorms hit the area.

It was a good but tiring hike.

Last second invite to hike up to Superstition Peak 5057, one of my favorite spots in the Supes.
Nice and cool to start and very nice temps throughout the day.
Some route finding on the way up per usual, though the trails are more defined than they used to be.
Stopped by balanced rock on the way to the summit.
Burn was prominent between the peak and Hiero intersection.
As always, wonderful scenery.
Great company and hike. Thanks all! :)

I threw out three choices to Linda, and she countered by choosing none of them. However, her counter worked out, as I hadn’t been there in a couple of years. Needing witnesses to document the abuse I endure for a future court date, I invited Speedgoats, Kelly, and John.

As Google advertised when we pulled into the lot, there was no parking structure, but there were gender-neutral bathrooms (porta-johns). We made our way to a mostly empty parking lot with a temperature of 39 degrees.

The approach to the Petroglyphs is my least favorite part of this hike, but does afford good views of our target. It's the part that 98% of people come for, but it’s rocky and boring. We passed a few people coming out as we were starting.

We enjoyed the empty Petroglyph area for a few moments until a clueless trio approached, not having a clue which mountain they were going to climb. That was the last time we saw them. After stopping John from creating his own drawings, we started our climb to the Balanced Rock area. The use trail was mostly easy to follow until we reached the rock. There was a finger trail that led us astray for a bit, until we consulted Route Scout. We lingered around the rock for a while and then began our ascent again. The last obstacle was a 15-foot climbing maneuver up a chute, then it was clear sailing to the magical, powder-free Fliver Disk.

After a short break, John got antsy, and we started our descent. We passed one solo hiker on his way up, then a mass of female hikers coming up from Carney.

On the ridgeline, we saw our first indications of the burn scar. For the most part, it stayed north of the trail.

Now on the Hieroglyphics Trail, it was an easy downhill follow. Approaching the Hieroglyphics area, we began to see the masses milling about—some asking if we made it to the top, some posing for the 'gram, and some wandering aimlessly.

We finished with a mostly full parking lot. Great temps throughout the day and bearable company.

Fauna seen:

0 snakes
0 deer
0 rabbits
0 javelinas
0 chipmunks
0 bears
0 honey badgers
numerous cougar

bruce and linda invited john and i to do the balanced rock loop
it's been ten years for me, so we were in
started hiking up hieroglyphics trail around 0730
upper 30s, but i only wore three layers and was fine since it was uphill
looked around the petroglyphs for a few minutes
found a use trail that led near balanced rock
we cut over to it and found another use trail that we followed to the peak
will have to compare my track to the hike with denny and john ten years ago
some of it looked familiar but i know we took a different route at times
a few little scrambles and one climb up a ten foot chute
took a long snack break at the summit
very hazy
saw one guy coming up as we were leaving, and crossed paths with a big group of gals who had come from carney
we also ran into two groups of guys who seemed to have no idea what they were doing
the most recent fire burned both sides of the ridgeline
we took the ridgeline over to hieroglyphic trail and started down
steep and loose at the top, but overall better than i remember it
lots of people at the petroglyphs and we had plenty of company as we finished
i had forgotten how much fun this hike is
challenging terrain, beautiful weather, great scenery and good company
thanks y'all - good times :)

Sort of a last minute choice for today’s hike, plus a late addition of Kelly and John. Cool temps to start, but the speed demons set a strong pace. Bruce hung back and listened to my whining. Easy hike to glyphs, where we met Jethro and his brothers/cousins/uncles/all of the above at the same time. They were headed to a vague “this peak or that peak” and it all seemed like a bad idea. After not giving them any helpful information, we then headed up the route to Balanced Rock. For the most part, the route is distinct, but having a downloaded track was helpful in a few places. I was grateful for shade.

Took a few breaks on our journey up the never ending uphill. Maybelline Eagle discovered the joys of tinted sunblock—it made him look at least a decade younger. There’s one spot to climb, maybe about 10-12’ that is probably the toughest spot of the route, but if I can make it, most anybody can make it.

Took a nice snack break at the summit of 5057 and enjoyed the hazy views. Could see the fire damage off the east side of the peak. Ran into a group of about a dozen young women after we left the summit and were approaching the ridgeline. One girl liked my hat, Bruce was jealous to not be able to use the full functionality of the cutout for buns or ponytails.

Headed north/west on the ridgeline. It has definitely seen some fire damage and has some loose and eroded spots. Descending was slippery, although I don’t think ascending would be that bad. Saw one spot of frosty ground.

Coming down Hiero wasn’t too bad, steep with loose rock, but nothing terrible. It seems longer than it is, but maybe that’s just the company. It was a bit of a zoo for the final easy part to finish up. We did our best to get around everyone as quickly as possible, although a few ladies took a liking to Bruce.

Fun hike, and a good workout. Great conversation and company for the day.

13 years since I last hiked this loop. Kind of forgot how fantastic it is. Hieroglyphic canyon is just beautiful and relentlessly steep to go up. Glorious hike up the canyon. Pretty cool to be on the ridgeline again too. there is some burn damage up there. chilled on 5057 for a good while. great weather, great day, great hike

The first hike I ever did with Wally was to 5057, but from Carney. this time we did it from Hiero. I had attempted 5057 from Hiero 21 years ago with my friend Ted, but we were inexperienced and bushwhacked our way up to the mesa NW of the peak and called it a day.

We got an early start due to the 90 degree forecast. Almost the entire hike up Hieroglyphic Canyon we were in the shade. It wasn't as bad as I remember it from 21 years ago. the scree section just before the ridgeline was steep but we took our time and it wasn't so bad.

Looks like a new section of the ridgeline was made on the one knob that goes almost to the peak rather than stay on the west side. We didn't take that route. The west side is gnarly and hard to follow as it ascends if your hiking eastbound. I lost the trail several times in this segment and ended up doing a lot of strenuous bouldering.

At the turn off to the peak we arrived at the same time as 2 other hikers who started from Carney. The originally had plans for the ridgeline but they said LDSP was closed (or wouldn't be open when they got there?, not sure), so they just did the same peak. Wally and I were both excited that we were able to pass these hikers and get to the peak before them since they were obviously a good 20 years younger than we are :y: . Of course in doing that, we veered off route and got to a way too steep and overgrown section to the peak, but whatever.

The hike down was brutal, it took as long as the ascent. The steepness and loose scree and dirt demand attention and a slower pace, which starts to seep into the joints. I took a spill twice with the scree and almost a couple times more. Even at the more level part of the trail after the tourist area the rocks there were hard to walk around. Got a few new blisters and my knee hurts after the one spill. definitely feeling the age factor start to take a toll after this one. But we still did it.

I knew it would get warm later but we got an early start and had shade most of the way up to the ridgeline. A few weeks off hiking had me feeling the climb but I pushed through okay. There were a few others on the trail. The guy in a yellow shirt (not Chris) took a wrong turn and ended up going back. Lady Rambo followed him by mistake and I ended up ahead of her and asked how that happened. There are a few places you could get off track and make the hike more interesting. After the short climb on the ridgeline there is a lower and higher trail. The lower route gets faint so the upper trail is the better choice. We made the summit about the same time as two other hikers. They mentioned seeing gila monster on the hike up from Carney Spring. It was still fairly nice on the ridgeline as there was a breeze blowing. We started back and saw 5 more hikers along the ridgeline. The hike down Hieroglyphic Canyon seemed steeper than the hike up. Must have been the stiff legs. The trail was easy to follow on but I didn't see the agave roasting pit we saw in 2016. [ photo ] I think I know where it is because I looked at one spot but it is now overgrown so not as easy to spot. I stopped near the petroglyphs and unzipped my leggings to shorts. First time ever though I have always worn convertible pants. A couple young guys asked Chris & I how far up the trail went. They didn't have much water and it was warming up. Chris told they may need more but they played it off. I said there's water in the creek so drink that if you need to. The parking area was about 1/4 full or less when we got back. Must be warming up. This was a good work out for a slacker.

This is a fun and challenging hike, so I decided to do it before the winter hiking season comes to a close.

I got to the trailhead early, but there were already a few cars there.

There was lots of water in Hieroglyphic Canyon which was nice to see. I thought that there might be a bit of snow up on ridgeline, but it had all melted, even in shady places along the trail.

It was a really nice day for the hike -- sunny, cool, with a very light breeze.

It is always nice to be on the Supes Ridgeline, so this is a good hike to do every now and then.

A few years ago, I hiked up Hieroglyphic Canyon to the ridgeline after a good amount of rain, and there were waterfalls around every turn. All the sights and sounds of the water were magnificent. With all the recent rain, I thought there would be a good chance to see that again. And yes indeed, the water is flowing nicely throughout the canyon.

I started at 8:20am, and even though it was a Monday, the parking lot was filling up. It was a nice 44 degrees with full sun and no wind.

The trail started getting muddy when approaching the pool and petroglyph area. Just a short distance after the pools, a section of the trail had enough flowing water that it became a small creek :) . Strategically placed rocks helped keep my hiking boots dry. It was a short distance after this section that I met a very pleasant hiker who was taking a break on a boulder next to the trail. He was also heading up to peak 5057, and we ended up hiking together. He was very good company, and we traded many stories of various hikes in the Superstitions.

Getting up closer to the ridgeline, there was plenty of snow and ice in shaded areas. After reaching the ridgeline, Weavers Needle and the snow-covered Four Peaks could be seen to the northeast. We headed east on the ridgeline trail and took extra care in the few sloping areas where snow and ice could not be avoided.

We made our way up "the crack" - a tall, narrow gap that has given pause to a few hikers. I hiked the Superstition Ridgeline Trail many years ago, and this was the spot that I remembered as being the trickiest.

Next it was frequent blurts of "Wow!" while walking through the incredible, tall rock pillars just below the summit. This automatically happens no matter how many times you see these hoodoos :D

Once we reached the summit, the views were spectacular. There was no wind and the temperature was perfect. About eight members of a hiking group were sitting on the summit boulders, having arrived just before us. They had hiked up from Carney.

This is a strenuous hike with incredible payoffs. The water, scenery and views are just amazing.

Set up a shuttle from Hieroglyphics TH, and then circled over to start the hike from Siphon Draw.

Hit the trail at 6:45. Seemed like the trail and route had been altered/eroded quite a bit from the recent rains.

On the traverse, clouds came and went, providing a variety of different looks/perspectives. Layers were helpful, as the temps fluctuated with the cloud cover and occasional light breeze.

Upon reaching the Hiero turn off, we decided to press on and tag 5057 before circling back. As we approached, the peak was covered in clouds. But we timed it well and enjoyed clear views when we topped out.

Some nice water still running through Hiero.

Another great day in the Supes.

Schedules finally aligned to get a hike in with ishamod before the end of the year. I usually try to avoid repeats, but I hadn't been to 5057 in almost four years, so when he voted for this one, I was in. We started just before sunrise from Hieroglyphic Trailhead with a few vehicles arriving just as we pulled up. Two hikers were already heading back as we approached the petroglyphs, so we had that area to ourselves, and there were some small pools but no flowing water.

I'd forgotten how well-defined the route is up Hieroglyphic Canyon--there was practically a trail much of the way and a nice path cut through some of the brushier spots. There was a little water in the bottom of the canyon and a few trickles in places, and the spires and scenery were great on the way up. We were finally in sunshine once we got up on the ridgeline and worked our way over to 5057.

The summit register that was there a few years ago is gone, but I did notice one of the reference marks I hadn't spotted last time, kind of oddly placed on top of a rounded boulder. We got there just in time to have the peak to ourselves for a while and eat at the top, then a group of three was heading up from the Balanced Rock route, and another solo hiker beat them to the top as we were about to start down. As we got back on the ridgeline route, we saw another solo hiker heading up toward 5057. [ youtube video ]

We detoured over to Three Sisters on the way down and enjoyed the views. There must've been 20+ vehicles at the Wave Cave lot, even on a weekday. On the way back to the ridgeline we passed a group of four approaching Three Sisters, then saw two more hikers down near the Boulder Creek origin, where there were some larger pools.

After hiking down Carney Spring and detoured over to Shaka Cave before finishing off the loop. We'd seen quite a few hikers all day--probably 10+ groups or individuals along the loop--but it was relatively quiet around the Wave Cave, and we managed to complete that final stretch without anyone asking us for directions to the cave. That might be the first time I've set foot anywhere near that trail and not been asked at least once...I think we should win a prize. Over the last mile or two, five or six powered paragliders were flying around.

We kept a pretty leisurely pace all day and took a lot of breaks at various spots along the way, so we finished just before sunset, but it was nice getting back up to 5057 after a few years and great catching up with ishmod again and getting one more hike in before the end of the year.

Morning burn to Supes Peak and back. If you're expecting cairns on this route, you won't find many, which was fine because there's an obvious path most of the way. Great temps, no wind and limited haziness.

Great hike up to Superstition Peak today! Hiero Parking lot was only about half full when we got there at 7:45am (Sat). Hike up to Hieroglyogics and pools was pretty quiet. Unfortunately, all pools were completely dry (!). From here on up to saddle and ridge line trail, going gets tougher and tougher… this is not an easy hike and route finding can get sketchy… often. Highly recommend an app (like RouteScout) to help you back when you lose the trail. However, just keep going and you will be rewarded with the most amazing views once you reach the saddle… it’s such a shock when you realize you you are actually looking down on Weavers Needle. If you still have some fight in you, make a right and head up towards the peak. This section can also be sketchy so take your time and keep your head and eyes up so you can keep on trail. Again, the reward of getting to the peak is well worth all the effort. Great hike with my nephew (Cam). Also, we ran into a great group of about 8 hikers at the peak… enjoyed meeting them.

With low snow levels in the forecast, Ryan suggested last night that it might be fun to head up to 5057. I was skeptical, but after waking up and checking the weather data decided it might be ok. We purposefully opted for a later start to let the storm clear out a little bit.

On the way, he told me he was thinking of Heiro, while I had thought we were gonna do Carney. Oh well. Add Heiro to my list of all time uniques so I was game. It was still raining when we got out that way, which was nice because it kept the hoardes away and the parking lot was mostly empty.

As we began the climb, the rain let up and we could see snow at the higher elevations though the ridge and peaks were still socked in. We saw nobody beyond the first mile and enjoyed a serene stop at the petrohydroview. As we got up into the snow, a we lost the track a few times as it's pretty indiscernable once covered. A few footprints from time to time indicated there was somebody above us.

At the saddle we met a group of three who were giving up and turning around, having no idea where the route across the ridgeline to 5057 was. When Ryan and I assured them we were going to do it, they took the opportunity to follow.

The forecast called for quick clearing before noon, and my hope was to experience that by the time we reached the summit, but that was not to be. It was thick pea soup, and when we reached the peak, we got pelted by a brief but heavy snow squall. As we dropped down off the high point, but before getting back to the ridgeline, the weather finally broke, opening stunning views across the valley below, the high peaks of the wilderness to the east, and the ridgeline to the northwest. It made for a delightful hike back down where we passed one more group making a summit attempt.

With a beautiful afternoon upon us, the bottom two miles was the expected tourist trap, but we pushed through quickly without stopping for the highlights.

Pretty much can't beat a day like this out here. :D

It has been almost a year since I had hiked to Peak 5057, so I decided to get up there while the temps were still cool.

Actually the wind was crazy today, making this the coldest hike that I have done this year. It was really cold and windy on the ascent in Hieroglyphic Canyon, and on the ridgeline in saddles and whenever I wasn't shielded from the north wind. Oddly, the winds died down when I got to Peak 5057, and with the sunshine it was quite pleasant at the peak.

I started early and only saw one person before the petroglyphs, and didn't see anyone else until I saw a couple of instagrammers in Hieroglyphic Canyon on the way back.

I like the section of the ridgeline that I was on, so it was nice to do this one today even with the wind.

It is really, really green out there, which I would think will make for a good wildflower season.

I saw a few Dichelostemma capitatum along the Hieroglyphic Trail, but that was about it. It is very, very green out there.

It was a great day to hit Superstition. I started at Carney (wave cave) trail and went counter clockwise. I did a side excursion and to the three sisters and the 5057 summit. It was nice seeing a fair amount of people up there tackling the harder stuff. There was a fair amount of water. I wish I had brought my water filter, because I did run out. It was toward the end, so not a big deal.

We (me, Jill, Janelle) got started around 0700 and headed up Hieroglyphics Trail. Dull first 1.50 miles, then we turned off at the water/glyphs and headed uphill. Faint route, but you can stay on it if you’re paying attention. Before too long, we could see a group of four men behind us, and as they got closer, I could recognize one voice but not place who it was. As we stepped off to the side to let them pass, I realized it was @ddgrunning and three of his friends. Quick greetings and introductions all around—good to see you, Dave.

I knew just before Balanced Rock we would have to make a sharp left and scramble up, but still managed to overshoot that turn. Backtracked a little to correct ourselves, and luckily managed to not miss any other turns the rest of the hike. Some ice just above the rock, but better footing as we steadily made our way uphill. While the shade had been cool, it was warm in the sun.

The little class 3 climb about a quarter mile from the summit posed no real challenge for Jill or Janelle, and after that, we made our way to the top of 5057, ditching our poles for the final scramble. Chatted with three gentlemen on the summit, exchanging contact info with two of them for future hikes. Descended to the Ridgeline trail with them before parting ways. They were actually doing nearly the same loop Bruce & Joe did yesterday.

We headed northwest on the Ridgeline, even seeing some snow, then dropped down Hieroglyphics Trail. Steep up top, nothing terribly difficult, but tedious footing to avoid slipping on any loose gravel. Finally reached the busy last 1.50 miles and it was smooth sailing back to the truck. Almost forgot…when we reached the trailhead, there were three sheriff’s dept trucks coordinating some sort of rescue, and the helicopter flew up to just past the petroglyphs and was hovering above. We didn’t notice any sort of commotion as we were hiking through that area, so either the incident was off the trail, or happened after we had passed by.

Fantastic day, and a lot of fun, although I definitely pushed Jill out of her comfort zone. Glad to get this one done again.

A colleague from my old firm reached out earlier in the week with an invite to hike up to Peak 5057 from the "south" route, beginning at the Hieroglyphic Trailhead. I've hiked 5057 up Hieroglyphic Canyon itself, as well as the traditional Carney Springs route, but was intrigued by what he referred to as the "south" route. He was referring to the description on another app, and when I compared that app's map to HAZ, I figured out it was the Balanced Rock Loop. The official HAZ route peels off from the Hieroglyphic trail sooner than the route my friend was using, and when I looked at alternate routes posted on HAZ, I found several that followed the other route, so I uploaded one of those to RS instead.

I'm supposed to be "tapering" for an upcoming half marathon next week, so doing a 3000+ AEG hike was probably not the best training move, but I went with my YOLO instinct and decided to do it anyway. And I'm glad I did. It was a gorgeous day to be outside, with fantastic visibility across the entire valley.

I met my colleague (Steve) and a couple of his friends (Tim and another Steve) at the TH around 7:15, and we got on the trail shortly after that. Still plenty of room in the parking lot at that time. We only passed a couple of people over the first 1.5 miles to the glyph area, and along the way enjoyed a nice sunrise and distant views up the ridgeline of the balanced rock, which would be a visual guidepost for our off-trail route.

Approaching the glyph area, we saw a group of hikers up ahead. Shortly after veering off trail and beginning the route-finding adventure, we caught up to the group, and I immediately recognized @LindaAnn. It's always nice to see a fellow HAZ member out in the "real world," and after introductions, it turned out we were all on the same itinerary.

Continuing up, the route predictably spiders, and sometimes we were following cairns, and other times just winging it, generally heading towards the balanced rock.

When we reached the knife-ridge on which the balanced rock sits, we had the option of staying on the west side of the ridge or crossing over to the east at a point where a short scramble leads to a little pass. Our group of 4 split, and I ended up crossing over to the east side, and made my way up to the balanced rock itself. Cool views from there and fun to reach this unique landmark that can be seen essentially from the TH.

We looked down on the rest of our group, trying to plod along below on the west side of the ridge. We convinced them to backtrack and follow our line on the east--which if not the only route, I think is the better one.

From that point, we followed easterly ridge all the way up to Peak 5057, which included some fun sections of scrambling and route finding. Cairns were pretty good, but it was nice to have the gps route on RS as well, as there are a handful of places where the route is not entirely clear, and we avoided some potential backtracking by consulting the GPS.

Reaching 5057, we were treated to great 360 degree views, and with the haze-free skies, visibility was fantastic.

We had the summit to ourselves (and hadn't seen another soul since crossing paths with Linda's group).

Descending back to the ridgeline trail, we passed a few more groups going both directions. The route between the steep downclimb NW of 5057 and the Hieroglyphic canyon turn off has become significantly more well-defined since the last time I did this section of the ridgeline.

The climb down Hieroglyphic Canyon was steep and fun. Still some water flowing through, but nothing like I'm sure it was a couple of weeks ago.

Once we reached the glyph area, it was the expected zoo of mass humanity. Lots of folks enjoying this easily accessible gem. Back at the TH by 12:30, with cars circling the now overflowing lot. Our exit made at least a couple of cars happy.

Another great day in the Supes and fun to try this new-to-me route!
