 That was a barn burner! :) I've been thinking about this hike for a few years and finally completed it in the rain today. I'll admit that thesnake lit a fire underneath me to get it done. Thanks for the TL @thesnakefromthelemma. I completed it the easier direction though, so I'll have to go back and hike it south to north like he did. One thing this hike reminded me of was that Sunrise is a really wimpy peak compared to the rest of the McDowell Mountain range. : wink : Much of this route also was familiar to the Torote Loops in the Sierra Estrella range. Could be a five star route except for all those god-damned jets overhead constantly!

A tale of two trails, err, I mean, one trail and essentially a route. Now I know why Sunrise Peak from 145th Street has over 5.4k activities recorded on Allfails and the 136th Street Spur less than 200. If you like plodding through sand, climbing over boulders, getting coated with Brittlebush pollen and dodging agitated vipers with very limited views of bougie McMansions, then the 136th Street Spur will be up one's alley. I'd repeat the Sunrise Trail again, the 136th Street Spur, not so much.

I found another trail that was an easy way to finish another HAZ area, this time Sunrise Peak-McDowell. I haven't done the Sunrise Trail from 145th St since April 2013 when I did it clear to Lost Dog and back. In fact, both times I've done this trail (Nov 2012) I did that; but not today. I guess I should have given thot to the over and back but I'll leave it up to the Thanksgiving gang.

It is a pretty hike and when the Brittlebush start blooming, it will be spectacular. There's plenty of great desert flora to keep you entertained and the trail is in good shape. It can be a little relentless on the upside and I hated every time the trail went down again when I was heading up. The people traffic was more than I thot it would be for a Wed. afternoon.

I was glad for every short flat section as I continued my way up and in and out of shade. There was a slight breeze from time to time. I did get to catch the fountain spouting off so I stopped to take a few pictures. I finally got to the intersection to either go straight and come up from the west side or go up here, on the east side. I've been up the east side a lot so I opted to go up this side. It surprisingly has some short inclines along with the steep inclines so really not too bad. I crossed over on this high trail to meet up with Sunrise west to finish the last of the climb.

I didn't really stay long on top as I've been up here several times. There was one group up here so I followed them down. There were still others coming up as I descended. The shade was fairly prominent now but I had already rolled down my shirt sleeves. One of the gals in front of me stopped to take a picture at an area I had taken on the way up but the backlighting really made the leafed-out ocotillos stand out.

My right hip/leg is giving me grief on and off during the hike but mostly after it's over. I do have a bone density test next month so we'll see if my hips are continuing to deteriorate or are maintaining. I've had this problem before and it went away so I'm hoping that's the case again.

I got back down to the trailhead but in order to get my 100% of the trails in an area, I had to take the Sunrise Trail Equestrian Spur to the overflow lot. It was a fun little trail and took you into a wash that was rather interesting. The Wash Trail continues but you hang a right (west) to go up to the Overflow lot where they have a water fountain for human and animal. From there it's a short jaunt up to the main Trailhead.

I enjoyed my Huck beer and ordered my Shrimp and Vegetables to go from the Thai House in north Scottsdale where I've been going for years back when I was a working girl.

WATCH: 4.48 miles (high point 3136, low 1906) Avg bpm 139, max 168 with 30% at anaerobic, 30% at zone 3 aerobic and the rest at zone 2 weight control burning 919 calories (I thot it would be more due to elevation gain so I wonder how they calculate that). Starting temp 62.5 and 17% humidity finishing at 4:25PM.

Got a new xpogo stick. Decided to hop across the MSP. Reviewing my route I confirmed having only touched the ground 24 times on the day, which might be a record.

Fun new people, got a little warm toward the end and I was the only one that opted for the peak. How can you hike 16 miles and not get a peak? Some people are weird!

I have not been out to Sunrise this year, so this seemed a great alternative to my heavy doses of SOMO and the Phoenix Mountain Preserves lately. Pulled in to the 136th street TH about 4:30 to get my hike started. I did not like the look of the automatic closing gate and 'closed at sunset', so I backtracked and parked in the almost deserted shopping center at 136th & Via Linda. I started up the wash, this is definitely the best trail on the Sunrise end of the park. Made it up to the summit in pretty good time, and saw my first other hikers of the day. I took a nice break up top to enjoy the views and then made my way down the 145th side. Saw about a dozen hikers coming down this way, nice easy decent too. I took the Equestrian spur from the 145th TH and followed that around to the dirt 'trail' that follows along Via Linda and took that back to the van. Absolutely fantastic sunset tonight, so much color in the clouds!

At the intersection of the Sunrise Trail and the 136th Street Spur Trail there are "warning" signs about the Spur Trail. I scoffed at them, each time I passed by. I was wrong, the 136th Spur is doable, but definitely not your typical McDowell Mountain Super Trail.

Interesting loop...first time on 136th St Spur trail which was really just walking up the wash below the houses. Also, 136th St TH is currently closed for some kind renovation/construction so we had to start from the 145th St equestrian lot and hike to 136th before going up the wash. Then over to Sunrise Peak where we had happy hour sunset before heading down to 145th St.

Have now done all the trails in the Southern region of MSP! :) Date hike with Brad. He dropped me off at the equestrian area and I went down and around to start the regular hike with him.

Great to see/hike with everyone again! Saw my first javelina while hiking (I've seen them while off-roading before, but never while walking).. it popped right out of a drainage pipe in front of us! Pretty cool. Good night hike, as usual.. looking forward to the next one.

Nice late afternoon hike. We started around 5:30pm and made our way up the 136th St wash. This is a fun section that I always enjoy. From there we reached the Sunrise Trail and made our way to the peak. After a short break, we made our way down to the 145th St TH and then took the equestrian trail back to the cars. It was a good evening.

9L and I met up with Not Julia, DB and Hiker Dan for my first night hike of the year, whoo!
Ran into a javelina before we were even out of the wash...

Pretty sure it came running out of the drainage tube with some Goompas chasing after it!!! The Goompas never made an appearance but the Javelina posed for a few photos...darn thing refused to let me pin a "Hello my name is Fred" sticker on it...

Brisk hike up the hill, we regrouped at the major saddles, made it to the top in under an hour and breezed down the other side at what felt eerily like a jog to me!!

Great to see everyone again, I suspect this will happen again soon. Whoo!

Been a while since I'd been to this side of McDowells. By parking at the equestrian parking lot added about .5 miles to the hike. Took this access trail which took me through a wash and under a bridge to connect to the Sunrise Trail. Had the trail to myself going up, though I did encounter several people on my way back down. View from top not the best. Very hazy out. No sign of the dust storm though the news kept talking about.

Night hike with Chumley. I really enjoy the 136th St Spur trail especially at night. The rest of the hike was enjoyable as well and the views of the city lights are very cool. We completed a loop and that was that. It was a good evening on the trails.

Recent forum discussions on night hiking reminded me 'tis the season again, and I was easily able to convince 9L to join me for an easy hike. He was gonna be up north anyway, so my SOMO plan got altered to MSP, and we got to bag Sunrise Peak.

I'd never hiked the 136th spur, and at night in the desert it made for some fun, with a keen eye for snakes in the grassy areas of the wash and on the few short climbs where hands were on the ground. None seen or heard all night though, just a few small spiders, one small tarantula, an entire colony of bats that flew from a sheltered spot we spooked them from, and some crazy insect with a 4-inch wingspan near the peak.

It was warmer than I had expected and the air was stagnant and stale except for at the very top where a very light breeze was refreshing.

We hiked the equestrian spur at the bottom and found that a nice singletrack trail exists for the entire length of Via Linda, so you don't have to hike on the street or sidewalk to get back to the 136th TH.
