Second one-off hike of the day. Probably a nice place to go if you lived nearby, but this park doesn't really warrant another separate trip to go back and finish off the miniscule Coyote Loop section. After finishing an activity, RouteScout still crashes when importing routes away-from-home.

Camped at Peralta Regional Park last night with a group of fellow employees from Grand Canyon. Woke up bright and early for a quick hike. Silly was perfect due to the varying abilities of our group.

It's easy on the hungover folk and perfect for the non-hikers.
The two of us with way too much energy for that walking nonsense took to the low elevation with gusto.
We tagged the "summit" 3 times before the others were back to the trailhead. My friends smart watch said 4.7 miles, but we haven't bothered adding it up. I'll have her do it later

We then loaded up the work van and i drove us up to Payson for lunch then off to Petrified forest, Flagstaff and home to the canyon. Long driving day for sure, but worth it.

I did a loop of 4 little trails on Silly mountain to check out the snow on the Supes ridge line.
During my travels, I talked with a nice lady about how cool the snow on the mountain was. She especially liked the Flatiron and said she hiked it a few years ago when she was 81!! 😳👋👍
The views today were cool.
Like HAZ, she rocks!

Early morning hike at Silly Mountain. I challenged myself by doing….the Silly Mountain “Mega Loop” : rambo : . This is the biggest loop you can do on Silly Mountain and still stay in the “park” on designated trails. I got on the trail a little before 7am, just as the sun was beginning to lighten the sky. Went in on the Palo Verde and connected to the Superstition View. The Supe View is one of the longer trails at .7 miles and runs (primarily) along the eastern base of Silly Mountain. Views of the Superstitions dominate, along with homes below (unfortunately). There is a little bit of a climb near the end as the Superstition View trail reaches the highest point on the southern end of Silly Mountain. Enjoyed the views from the top. The air was clear, so the distant views were nice. From there I was briefly on the Jackrabbit, Coyote and Baldy trails as I made my way to the Crest trail. The Crest trail is the other “major” trail (also about .7 miles long) that heads in a north - south direction, only this one is elevated, running just below the ridge line. I noticed at its southern terminus there is a solid user trail heading down the west side of Silly Mountain. It heads down toward the homes in the area, so I am sure it used by the locals….might be worth checking out. At the northern end of the Crest trail is High Point - the tallest point in Silly Mountain Park. Short, fun scramble to the top of that. Once again enjoying the views. Then took the Old Mine trail back to the TH. It was actually a much nicer hike than I thought it would be. These trails, because they are so short, have always been a “throw in” when I visit the east side. But this loop holds its own. (Though it is still awfully short for the drive).

Bye week for the Steelers, so I took Dmitri with me out for a quick morning hike. I wanted something close by and not too hard, so this looked like a good option. There were a few trails that I hadn't done before, so there was something new to explore. It had been already over 7 years since our last visit here, time flies.

We started on the Brittlebrush Trail and took that to the Superstition View Trail, then headed up to Old Baldy and looped around the smallerpeak on the Coyote Loop and Jackrabbit Trails. While we were on Old Baldy, I noticed trails to the east of the park on the flat area there. We headed down to that area, which joins the Silly Mountain trails at the junction of the Old Baldy and Crest Trails.

We followed those unmapped trails to where they ended on the sidewalks and then bushwhacked over the one hill to where I saw another trail on our way over. That trail headed south to a service road under the powerlines south of the park, so it seemed like the thing to do to just follow that back to the trailhead. The road were were on faded into a singletrack which meandered away from the powerlines and then went back to them, joining another service road, which took us back to the parking area.

Saw a few other hikers, but it wasn't crazy busy. Nice weather and nice to explore and discover some new trails.

Made a loop ,first up and down Silly Mountain and then down the power line access road along SR 60 to rejoin neighborhood trails. Summer like morning already 74° at 0630, nice that the west side of the mountain is shaded until 0730. About a dozen other hikers out and about on the Silly Mountain trails which is light for a Saturday. , no one else on the Mountain Brook or Superstition Foothills trails, still need to figure out a way to miss the quarter mile of street walking on this loop. Wanted to title this “hood walk” but that name has been copyrighted  and I didn’t check the mail. Only wildlife was the suicide bee that flew directly into my forehead and stung me, I’m ok in fact I think it took out a couple of wrinkles :?

Had the notion for awhile to walk out my back door and go to the park. Not likely on anybody else’s wish list. Started the neighborhood trails up the east side of the Silly Mountain complex, exited north at the last saddle before dropping down to the TH parking lot. Couple of miles of road walking past the barking junkyard dogs brought me to the Broadway Trailhead. The small lot was full, surprised by the ominous sign saying entering burn area but only saw about an acre of scorched desert. Couple of groups heading back to the parking lot before I went by the unofficial trail to the cave . The tread on this portion of the Lost Goldmine and Jacob’s Trail is terrible until just past the cave turnoff, no where to step except on the ankle busting rocks. Only saw one other hiker from the cave turnoff to LDSP , I complained to him about ruining my solitude :D . Enjoyed walking past the canyons on my right and looking over the East Valley to my left, extra nice having the sun at my back the entire time. When I approached Siphon Draw I called my wife for a ride back, based on her ETA went to the Prospectors View junction and took it and then Treasure Loop, timed it perfectly for her arrival. Now I can put to rest this idea about a walk to the park.

Finally back in Arizona, trying to reacclimatize and get used to walking trails with lots of rocks. Decided to leave the neighborhood and traverse the Silly Mountain area going west to the trailhead parking lot using the north side of the trail system and returning east on the south side. Started on Superstition View Trail, very hazy right now. Only saw a half dozen other hikers though 9 cars in the parking lot. Had the summit to myself for the brief moment I spent there. Other than rabbits no other wildlife seen but was concentrating on keeping the ankles from turning on the rolling rocks :D .

1st trip
I have had the Pinal County High Point on my Radar screen for a while, so I decided to head towards Tucson and add Pinal County to my AZ County High Point list. I have now done 10 of the 15 AZ county high pointers, and hope to get at least 4 of the 5 done in the coming months. I still have to figure out what to do about Mount Graham.

I drove down and took FR 29 from Peppersauce Campground for about 1.5 miles and parked. As it turned out I could have driven another 3/4 mile or so and parked at the junction with 29-4472-4475. I was fine with parking where I was to make a more legitimate hike out of it. I think that a 2WD vehicle with decent clearance could go about a mile from the campground, but if you went much further than that it would be better in a 4WD vehicle.

My route on the way up went from FR 29 to FR 4472 to FR 4483, which led up to Rice Peak. Then I did an easy off-trail descent down the north slopes of Rice to the Pinal County High Point. I then retraced my steps back up to Rice Peak and then back to FR 4483. This time, when I got the 4483-4475 junction, I took FR 4475 just to take a different route back. I believe that @chumley drove up this road when he bagged the Pinal Hi Point, and there were some steep, steep sections of the road, which would for sure make for an adventurous drive.

On my way back into town I was driving through Gold Canyon and decided to stop off and bag Silly Mountain, since I had never done it. There is actually a decent trail system through there with lots of trails -- where else can you do a 1.8 mile hike and be on 7 trails? I did a short loop and bagged Silly Mountain, and there were a number of other trails that I did not go on.

The mileage and AEG for the 2 hikes are as follows:
Rice Peak/Pinal Co High Point: 8.8 miles with an AEG of 2,949'
Silly Mountain: 1.8 miles with an AEG of 466'

The stats above are the sum of these two.

There were a few wildflowers in bloom on Silly Mountain -- quite a few brittlebush and globemallow, and a few creosote bush and Dichelostemma capitatum.

Quick hike with the boys before the heat hit. We were on the trail by 5:20 AM. Youngest (18 months) rode in the carrier for most of the way, walked maybe .2 miles along Superstition View. Oldest (3 years) walked most of the way, though he needed some help over the steep sections of Old Mine and High Point and was too tired to walk out the last half mile. Nice breeze for much of the hike, didn't even feel like 90 when we got back to the parking lot (the van claimed it was that hot, though). Oh, and the visibility was turrible this morning.

The park was a lot of fun. I usually take the boys over to San Tan for these quick outings, this was a nice change. It's free (yay!) and just challenging enough to give the oldest boy a hard time. Trails were well-defined and a bit rocky, nowhere as bad as the trail off of Broadway. The few other hikes we saw (maybe three or four groups?) were very friendly, too. Will definitely be visiting this one more often.
