it's been seven years since doing this hike with linda and whitney
after considering some other options, we decided to do it again
got going around 0715 up aspen to the peak
took the long way to the lookout, then back down to wilderness of rocks
that trail and the lower part of mount lemmon trail are my favorites - love the boulders
cool temps up high and some clouds at times
took a break down low
the uphill to marshall saddle was a bit warmer in the sun
overall a very nice day
i really enjoy hiking on mount lemmon and any other sky island for that matter
thanks linda, nice sampler

Kelly and I opted for a repeat of a hike we did on Lemmon about seven years ago. Got to Marshall Gulch and started around 0715. Laughably, it took us a moment to get onto Aspen Trail. Lots of vegetation growth in the several years it’s been since I was last in this area. My calves were killing me the first couple of miles, then finally loosened up, but didn’t feel great all day—my punishment for spending a chunk of Friday perched on a ladder while painting. Aspen is in generally good shape, and we took it all the way up to the top. Extremely hazy views, but closer scenery was still nice.

Once up top, we made out way over to the summit. That use trail is mostly defined, with a short rocky climb the final few hundred feet to the summit. Spent a few moments there, then made our way back to the Lemmon and Meadow trails. Took Meadow trail, then crossed back east on Lemmon over to the Lemmon Rock Lookout. The sign said closed, probably for stupid reasons, so we pretended to not understand how to read English and went up there anyway. Snapped a few quick pics, then headed back down.

Retraced our steps back west on Lemmon, then down. The descent was in rougher shape—some erosion in places, and some vegetation encroaching on the trail. We had lunch in a shady spot not far for the junction with Wilderness of Rocks trail. Warmer, but still pleasant, although most of the earlier shade provided by scattered clouds had disappeared.

WOR has also seen some erosion, and a little vague to follow in places. Long climb back out had me whining a bit. I was glad to reach the saddle. The final hike out on Marshall Gulch was a breeze, finishing up just before 1530. Trailhead was a mob scene. I was glad I drove the Jeep (intentional decision) as it’s a lot easier to get it out of that crammed parking lot vs either truck. It’s also easier to avoid bicyclists on that highway while driving the Jeep, less side mirror to worry about and less having to cross over the double yellow. Traffic back to Phoenix was incredibly light. Great day and a great hike, thanks, Kelly, for joining me on this one again.

Decided to do the figure-8 counterclockwise from Marshall Gulch. Aspen Trail - Lemmon #5 - WOR - Marshall Gulch

Mistakenly headed due south out of the parking lot and couldn't find the trail in the ravine. Backtracked and started over - pretty obvious where Aspen starts in hindsight. The detour cost me about 10 minutes.

Aspen Trail rules early in the morning. The sunrise was great and the ferns are alive and well. Made good time up to Lemmon. It's my first time back on Lemmon in a long time and I forgot how beautiful it is up there. Headed down Lemmon #5, the ferns and excellent views continued. Spotted a turkey just before hitting the junction with Sutherland Trail.

WOR was quite balmy by 9am. The humidity didn't help. I skipped the cool rock face at the head of Romero Canyon - I wanted to see the view again but decided to push through the heat first and foremost. The four miles from Lemmon #5 to Marshall Saddle was a slog. Ironically, the last push down Marshall Gulch was way worse - my legs had reached their limit for the day and I had to take numerous breaks.

One of my favorite hikes in recent memory. The Catalinas are something special.

Added in Marshall Gulch and did the loop clockwise so I would descend radio ridge near sunset, for the views. Windy for most of the hike, helping drive the Telegraph Fire. It was putting up a large pyrocumulus for most of the day.

Lots is burned, including 99% of the dog hair and the appropriately spaced reproduction from 20 years ago. Lots of the survivors from the last hot fire, too. My work from 7 years ago to the day, was in vain.

The bracken ferns smell nice, as they are growing. Decent hermit thrush activity in the gulch, but I left before dark so I don't know if whip-poor-whils are present.

Haven't been here in 4 years. Checked on some of my work, and there is some progress but it is not obvious. More work is needed. A nice loop hike in some of that Tucson Desert Scrub we hear so much about.

Perfect weather, though typically hot in the WOR. Lots of Hermit Thrushes and other birds. Evening cool hiking up the Aspen is really refreshing. Turns out I was right behind Linda as her group took a lot of breaks despite starting hours before me. Lots of water flowing up higher on the road, which was a good sign. While a very long drive, this is a nice hike at this time of year.

Parked at the Marshall Gulch TH, and started on the Aspen trail a little after 8:00. Trail is in good shape, although the locust could be trimmed back a little. We took a snack break at Marshall Saddle, then continued to head up Aspen. At the top, we headed over to the summit. My RS straightlined just before the summit, but pausing and restarting got it recording again. The distance affected was minimal. From the summit, we headed over to Meadow Trail, and took that west to where it meets Lemmon trail. From there, we took a quick detour over to Lemmon Rock lookout, then retraced our steps and continued down Lemmon. Found a shady spot for a lunch break, then continued down. Headed east at Wilderness of Rocks. It was hot by then, so we took our time. Refilled our water at Lemmon Creek, then continued on. Not too far from the junction with Lemmon Rock trail, we were greeted by an angry Arizona Black Rattler. I proceeded to annoy him some more to try to get him to pose for some pictures, but he wouldn't move out of the shade. At Marshall Saddle again, we headed down Marshall Gulch to finish out the hike, finishing up just before 4:45. Nice day, even if it was hot at times. All new territory for Daniela.

Backlogging some trips from the past few months. Spent some time in the Catalinas to beat the heat in Phoenix. Had not been in this area too much so it was a great change. This was a great loop and felt very secluded most of the time. Started at the radio towers and headed west on the Mt Lemmon trail. The very gentle, steady decline winds its way down through some pretty thick forests and then down to some cool rock formations. The views up here were fantastic. Once you get down towards the floor of the WOR valley there were several springs and small streams across the trail. I probably took the most difficult route, but I made my way down to the Lemmon Pools and ate some lunch. This was a cool, creepy, little area. The rest of the WOR hike was pretty flat and easy going. I heard water flowing the whole way up to the saddle. The last part of the hike was obviously the toughest part climbing about 2k feet back up to the top. Wanting to get some elevation training in for an upcoming Humphrey's hike, this was definitely a good warm up.

@John9L put together a nice loop for my first time up on Lemmon and I came away with a great first impression of the area. We took a lot of breaks because in accordance with National Dog Day we were hiking with three dogs and it did get a little warm for stretches. Although, apparently not everyone was observing National Dog Day, as someone chose to mumble their opinion about dogs to us as we passed him early on. Luckily for him, we passed him on the trail two more times, but I am not sure we won him over on either of those encounters either.

All of the trails on the loop were in pretty good shape in my opinion. The initial climb was a tad warm, but its a pretty quick and easy climb, so none were too affected by it. It was a little busy on top and the high point is not much to write home about, but Lemmon Lookout was a worthy detour. The hike through Wilderness of Rocks was great and there was ample water for dogs and skinny dipping apparently, as another group was partaking in that. We bumped into @arizona_water in the WOR and chatted a bit, nice to finally meet him. We finished to a crowded traihead area and played a little musical car parking spots to get out and let others in. We finished up at the Tucson Hop Shop, had a couple of beers and ate curry from a food truck, when in Tucson I guess....

National Dog Day

Every day is National Dog Day in my house and I do realize its just a silly hashtag driven holiday. However, I could not help but get a little sentimental reflecting on how much my dogs mean to me. In particular, how much Cupcake means to me. She helped me get "normal" after a tough year in Iraq and then waited for me when I left her again to go to Afghanistan. She turns 13 in December, but is still one of the toughest dogs I know, she has been hit by a car and nearly drowned in the Blue Range, but she still persists and knocks out miles and eats chicken treats with the zeal of a five year old dog. She has been the most consistent entity in my life for most of my adult years and I really can't imagine life without her and Mr. Blanco...

Met up with Lee and Carrie for a nice hike on Lemmon. Lee and I left Phoenix fairly early and made the drive down to Tucson where we picked up Carrie and headed up the Catalina Hwy. We made the drive up and parked in a very busy parking lot at the Marshall Gulch area. From there we geared up and made the hike in. We passed a variety of people and then headed up the Aspen Trail towards the summit. Once up top we soaked in the views and headed west and took a snack break before heading down the Lemmon Trail. We then turned into Wildnerness of Rocks and headed across. This section is one of my favorite hikes around. I love the formations and enjoy the creek flowing through. At one point we took a lunch and then continued hiking back to the vehicle. We finished up late in the afternoon and then started the return. We stopped in Tucson to get some food and then dropped Carrie off and headed back to Phoenix. It was a long day but was well worth it. Thanks Lee for driving!

big day up on lemmon. i parked at the mt lemmon trailhead. went down aspen draw, upper sabino riparian to summerhaven and back. loaded up the pack then hit mt lemmon, wilderness of rocks, marshall gulch to TH and back, then died up radio ridge on the aspen trail back to my car.

i've recently highlited the post winter conditions of some of these trails. new reports:

Aspen Draw: from the top of radio ridge to the upper sabino riparian juntion is clear. there is a nuisance tree down on the spur to ski valley parking lot

upper sabino riparian: a couple of big down trees that are surprisingly tough to get over/around depending on the route you take (these are on the singletrack, not the nearby wider roadbed.

Mt lemmon: totally clear to WOR from my recollection. awesome of course

Wilderness of Rocks: clear from my recollection. love love love this trail. not much water in upper lemmon creek but definitely some

heading into the beastly final climb up aspen trail to radio ridge nearly killed me today. Wow

cold at the start (upper 30's at 9000 feet)

killer route

In the continuing theme of "Staying Cool in July in Tucson by Hiking with Awesome Women", Sirena and I headed up to the top of the Santa Catalinas to do one of our very favorite hikes. We both commented multiple times that this hike is pretty underrated - it really is a gem! You get meadows, aspen groves, old growth pine and Douglas fir forests, vistas of the west and south slopes of the Catalinas, running water, granite hoodoos, graceful descents and steep climbs. Its just about everything we hike for - the only thing missing is isolation. Wait-unless you go on a Tuesday - then you've got the mountain to yourself! We saw one other trail runner, and he was there and gone in a flash (and to be honest, provided his own visual interest if you know what I mean).

Tons of water up in the WOR right now - streams all flowing and pools all full. It made for buggy stops, but it wasn't unbearable.

We stopped our break short and skipped the detour to Lemmon Pools thanks to a happy smattering of thunder. Luckily, we watched the storms rage all around us, but the rain didn't start overhead until we got to the cars. Nothing motivates my uphill like thunder, though!

Interesting things to note: I had 2 new pieces of gear for this trip... A new phone, which I used for all the photos (I'm impressed really) and new boots. Big, heavy serious boots. I bought them for doing trail work - so its nice to have a chance to break them in. But transitioning from trail runners to serious boots takes more than 9 miles, I'll tell you that!

What's left of the Friday hiking group (the rest have fled the heat) ventured to Mt. Lemmon for the loop that never fails to deliver. Marshall Gulch, Aspen, Lemmon Rock Lookout, and Wilderness of Rocks Trails in counterclockwise loop. Lots of folks on the trails, but relatively peaceful from LRL on. Beautiful, cool day, except for the warm hike back up WOR to the Marshall Saddle.

One of our goals today was to explore the Summit Crags off Mt. Lemmon #5 for future climbing outings. Frank and I dropped down from the Trail #5 just past the metal shed and headed down toward Rappel Rock, the dominant rock feature in the area, passing Avalon on along the way. The other two proceeded down Lemmon Rock Lookout Tr. The plan was to meet up again where the LRL trail crosses a small drainage that almost always has water in it; in fact it is the only place normally with any water along this trail.

The bushwhack down to and past Avalon Rock and Rappel Rock is an experience all its own. Past Rappel Rock, the going is very difficult because of thick Oak bushes, but at least there are no locusts or thorny bushes. We bailed on going all the way down the clogged and rugged drainage and cut up to intersect the LRL trail and met up with the others at the planned spot.

So, we had one winner (Avalon Rock is not difficult to reach and has lots of sport routes in our wheelhouse), and one loser (I would not climb down to Rappel Rock again. Too hard with gear and all trad climbing anyway, which I'm not proficient at).

Plenty of water at the stream crossing on LRL and all along WOR. Great day out with good friends, probably the last organized hike till mid October because of of travel, etc.

In a little bit of a funk right now; heard this AM of a good friend's passing. Remembering yesterday helps.

Other plans got postponed, and I was able to make a big event hike that I'd previously declined, but wasn't ready for the actual big part of it. But I did some math and figured I could make a worthwhile day out of things and still meet up with the group of hardcore crazy people.

I arrived a little bit early and subsequently had time to create some rock art, and just a few minutes before I was going to head up in an attempt to beat the setting sun, the rest of the group arrived on their climb from Romero Pass. We all enjoyed a short break before setting off on the final few miles back to the summit where our cars awaited along with a few more people and celebratory beverages. It dropped to 39 as I passed the ski area, but was back to 70 once we arrived back on the valley floor.

I love WOR, and the upper part of Lemmon #5 was new to me, and quite enjoyable. Aspen was a burned mess and not that great. Marshall Gulch was a surprising treat. Marshall Peak is an overgrown prickly mess.

On Sunday morning we left the Chiricahua National Monument and started driving west for Tucson. We both had Monday off and decided to drive up the Catalina Hwy for the summit of Mount Lemmon. The drive up was a real treat but was slow going as it took almost an hour. We topped out at the parking area and started hiking around 1pm.

We made good pace as we hiked down the Lemmon Trail. It was sunny and warm but pleasant overall hiking at 7-9k feet. We connected onto the Wilderness of Rocks Trail and started heading east. We took a break near the Fish Rock people like to camp by. We both noticed we were low on water so we continued to the creek which was flowing strong. We filtered water and relaxed in the shade. From there we continued and started gaining elevation. Our pace was even and we had plenty of time before sunset. We took another short break at the junction with the Aspen Trail and then made the climb back towards the summit. Along the way I had a sugar crash and I needed to eat some M&Ms. I felt better and we pushed on to the summit.

Afterward we drove a few miles down the hill and selected a camp in Rose Canyon. We had our choice of campsites because it was a Sunday night and most sites were vacant. We settled in for the night and then saw the moon rising and remembered the Eclipse is tonight. It was very cool as the moon went from dark to full in a couple of hours. We returned to Phoenix the next day and that concludes our long weekend getaway.

We departed the Chiracuaha's on Sunday and made our way to Mount Lemmon. I had spent some time on Lemmon before, but had never previously visited the top. Driving up the Catalina highway to the top of Lemmon is a very scenic hour long winding road. So, we made it the top without incident and commenced our walking. First part of the trail is easy going through a beautiful forest. We made our way downhill gradually to the Wilderness of Rocks. Very cool area with interesting rocks and a stream with decent water. 9L was looking for the fish rock camping spot that was on his radar. He found it and we paused there for a break and to eat some food. There were many great looking camp sites through this portion. 9L showed me where he had camped on a previous trip with Chumley. We stopped at a stream to filter some water and I admired a little campsite on the bank. We passed some backpackers along a portion of the hike that is also part of the AZT. Later on we passed an energetic group of campers and a trail runner.

We departed the Wilderness of Rocks we joined up with the Aspen trail for the last portion of our hike. Until this the trail had been easy downhill for miles and now all the elevation gain was concentrated in these final miles as we made our way back up Lemmon. Aspen Trail starts off on forested switchbacks and then the last portion of the hike is an exposed burn area with scenic views and wildflowers. We finally topped out just as the sun was getting very low in the sky and were both grateful to see the Jeep again.

That night we camped at Rose Canyon Lake and some skunks visited our campsite, snooping around the table while we were staying warm by the fire! Also, we enjoyed the eclispe with our fire and camp beers. A great end to our long weekend away.

My second day on the mountain and "I'm felling much better now" ;) . I had a great recovery nap last night, and had no plan as of 08:00, so I grabbed the laptop, headed to Ski Valley and used my phone to pipe in a track. I knew I was limited in several ways, but picked the best route for my general needs. Great Choice! I'm not gonna go into detail here, but this trek was the conception of a "Peak of Summer", Mega-Loop, in the the upper-front range of the Cat's. The high elevation diversity along this route cannot be matched. I plan to refine this into a Description, where I'll be much more specific in the transitions (soon to come)...
Incredible day in the high of the low country. :y:

I wanted to do one last pre-monsoon hike on Mount Lemmon, since June to early July is typically one of the nicest times of year up high. I was sick from a nasty reaction to an MMR vaccine for the last 3 weeks and was really not able to get up here and do much hiking, but I am finally feeling better. I chose this "easy" loop after Wrightson the day before and thought it would be a nice hike. It proved harder than I thought, and it was actually hot for most of the hike below 8000' to 8500'. My legs were tired from the previous day, and going up was difficult. 3 weeks of inactivity does that.

Nice temps and bird calls in the upper section of the WOR made that one of the nicer parts, despite just wanting to be done. However, once up on the last stretches of the Aspen trail in cool temps, it was nice again. This was despite it being after sunset. I caught views of a few bolts of lightning well south of Tucson. I thought they may have been around the Santa Ritas, but the radar made me think it was in Mexico. Sure is dry up there, with the creek having no flowing water in it, and a lot of growth stagnating. Rain will be welcome.

dry Lemmon Creek @ WOR #44 Dry Dry
Completely dry for most of it's length. Only one nasty brown pool observed in the upper canyon parts.
