Quick loop today. Super flat, but knew that going in! As a result, lots and lots and lots of bikers! Time to go to the superstition Ridgeline, LOL!

Enjoyed the beautiful views full of saguaros and interesting rock formations. Stopped for a quick snack by the crested saguaro on the coyote canyon trail (which is why my friend wanted to do this hike!). The volunteer at the granite mountain Trailhead mentioned the narrow area of the coyote canyon trail being like a slot canyon, but I think that is a bit of a stretch! 🤣 Nevertheless, this trail had some some good variety. I have not been on any of these trails before, so it was nice to try something new.

Enjoyed the perfect weather, and had a nice view of some stormy weather off to the northeast.

I see something happened to my route on routescout. It looks like it dropped off for a half mile and then re-engaged. Bummer. It was on airplane mode the entire hike, from start to finish.

I purchased some new hiking shoes and wanted a short flat hike to start breaking them in. (Prospects for #greatness @LindaAnn  ) The Granite Mountain Loop was the plan but it was an absolute zoo. I've never seen that parking lot so full and on a weekday no less. We have seen a lot of HAZr's posting the trails to the north of the mountain so that's what we did. This loop came up on HAZ's "Auto Route Display" feature and Cathy gave it the thumbs up.

The guide published by @Crzy4AZ showed limited parking at a small TH farther north on 136th St. but the city has recently posted "No Parking" signs on all these step-over entry points around the park we found out. :(
We drove back to the south and found a spot on the side of the road that appeared legal and hiked back up to the TH @ Dove Valley Road.

The loop was a real gem with decent tread most of the way. The Coyote Canyon Trail reminded us of Blue Wash up by Camp Creek Falls, lots of granite walls and running water to boot. This would be a terrific hike for out of town guests. The superbloom was strong at this location although the cloud cover kept the poppies closed up.

With the nice weather, I didn't feel like doing stuff around the house.

I decided I was going to clear my head and churn out some easy miles in the MSPN.

Just a smattering of people out, split 50/50 hikers and MTB'ers.

The Granite Mountain - Cholla Mountain loop gets most of the traffic here having the Balanced Rock, Amphitheater and Cathedral Rock attractions. I do enjoy these trails and they are perfect for flat-lander out of town guests, but I enjoy the relative solitude of the trails north of here.

Add in the sweet rock formations everywhere and a couple of crested saguaros, with the weather and it made for an enjoyable afternoon.

3-25-2022 (would have been my father's 95th birthday). This is delayed, but not on purpose, as life got in the way... that and technical glitches. Oh, and if you tuned in to see if I was with Joe, Bruce and John; you will be disappointed. This is a lot easier version of what they did.

I drew out a bigger loop to try and get some extra miles and take advantage of maybe, getting more wildflower pictures on March 20th. The weather was a tad dicey but ended up being nearly Tibber-perfect for one of the best photosets I have shot in a while. Seriously, it's all about the light! Nearly every photo was so good it made me giddy :D . The hike itself was fabulous as well. I'm at a crossroads where I can't decide if I want to hike for speed or for the experience; it's hard for me to do both. Now that I'm retired, one of those decisions I didn't think I'd be facing.

I started up Powerline Road. I passed by a docent before stopping to take a picture of a tall Soaptree Yucca. The docent passed me. When I caught him I asked if he was hiking arbitrarily or had a route. He was doing the Turpentine/Black Hill loop. I continued on my way until I noticed a gathering of Fairy Duster and then saw a Roadrunner land so I snapped a couple pictures. The Roadrunner was pretty fast so only got his backside. I mentioned it to the docent and he says they rarely see Roadrunners out here.

As I veered to the right, north, I heard and then spotted a male Phainopepla and zoomed in for a few shots. I hooked up with the Granite Mountain Loop Trail where I started encountering lots of great color; especially with the partly cloudy light and of course, lots more people too. Needless to say, I got bogged down taking pictures and dodging hikers and bikers. However, the flower show is very, very light compared to normal; especially the lack of poppies and lupine ground cover. What was there for the next half-mile was very pretty and lush with the Chuparosa and Brittlebush.

Next I saw a couple hawks high in the air. For awhile, they were hovering side by side riding the thermal. I tried to get a photo but this camera will not take the shot until its focused on the subject. I did get several photos but mostly enjoyed just watching them. This funny substance started dropping on me but not enough to deter me from continuing. I checked out the Siamese Twin saguaros which are growing up nicely. Along here were some small wildflowers including Owl Clover, Popcorn Flower, and some Lupine along with that little yellow belly flower.

There was also that mystery flower with the green bottom and dried tall top. I sure hope somewhere along the line I will be able to ID the flower. The other dried out flower that looks somewhat like a bull thistle of some sort; I think that's what it is. I was able to get a really good picture and turned it into black and white; a thing of beauty now. I made my turn on the Balanced Rock Trail and climbed up from the back side. On the other side, I took a picture of a bike rider which turned out pretty cool because of the sky above; should have taken one on my phone.

I continued west and south to eventually reach the Cholla Mountain Loop taking mind of the weather to the south and west, making for some pretty cool photos. I would stop and listen to the wind as I went by different trees or cactus. The wind sounds much differently when you stop near some object that's capturing its cooler sound. This happened again as I was near the Coyote Loop on the north side of my hike. I was glad to have the wind at my back as it seemed a bit warmer. It's been a while since I've been this close to Cholla Mountain and the foreground views provided great entertainment.

There were two different sections going on this part of the trail, an Ocotillo area and a Crucifixion area. A little past this were some blooming Banana Yuccas. I would see a few more of those in the next few miles of my hike. Of course, my eyes are also drawn to the occasional light on Granite Mountain. Once I started hiking on Branding Iron Trail you could see the very stormy weather in the Mazzies which, once again, provided for great pictures. I also spotted a rock window that had a saguaro on the other side of it, very 8) . It's one of those things that if you don't look the right way you will miss it. I eventually came around to its other side and there is a path up to the area. It's also interesting that there are signs up on old trails that basically say, travel at your own risk. I would see four of these.

Next I joined back up with the Granite Mountain Loop which was familiar territory for me as I've hiked this loop in this direction a few times. There was great light on one of those Whitethorn Acacia trees; those thorns are simply stunning. I did look over to what I call Cholla Hill and saw three downed saguaros so I stepped off trail to get a picture; being mindful of snakes.

And now, onto new territory, Coyote Canyon Trail. Here I found a butterfly more or less sitting on a flower but no luck with my focus on it. But, I did get some very close shots of a squirrel that seemed to be posing so that I could get the perfect shot. Just a little bit later, I got to circle the double Crested Saguaro cactus :) . It is a nice healthy specimen. There is also another trail junction here. This trail was a continual surprise. I don't know who designed this route but it was a delight. And they call this a Canyon for a reason. Apparently on the previous trip reports/pictures, I must have missed this or forgotten what a treat this was, certainly unexpected for a desert hike.

I meandered my way and came upon a sign that said Dove Valley Trail; altho I thot this was all Coyote Canyon Loop; which perhaps it is with this trail thrown in as part of the loop. As I headed south you hike near where there is a grass pool to your right (west). I thot it was Bootlegger Tank but it wasn't as that comes up later. I don't see any name for it so it must just be a low laying area. There seems to be other trails that shoot off from here so I'll have to check them out in the future. This is a fun area to hike. I passed the intersection with the Cow Poke Trail as I headed east on the Dove Valley Trail (former road I think). In the distance I could see the sun rays shining down on Granite Mountain so I kept an eye on that to see if we'd get some bigger rays and over a larger portion of the mountain.

I finally made it to 136th Street Express Trail of which I had low expectations but once again, was pleasantly surprised. It zigs and zags and bypasses Bootlegger Tank which is empty but pretty good-sized. I started seeing more bike riders as I had since getting on the Dove Valley part of the trail. Lots of great scenery but I lost my light; though I did get a picture of a Mockingbird and then later, a rabbit by the TH.

It's hard to believe the elevation is 1500 feet higher in places so near where I live, which makes me think I could hike out here, even if it's warmer. My legs were pretty sore from my Barbell class the morning before; that always surprises me as I workout at least three times a week and this was my second Barbell class in as many days. It's not painful but I do feel the soreness in my legs. You would think hiking would loosen up your muscles but that doesn't seem to work for me. Nonetheless, a fabulous day on the trail and I had a lot more left in me; but with no elevation to speak of, I better  .

TMI: Most of the pictures I took with my regular camera but I figured the phone would do a decent job of the landscape photos just because of the light. It seems my camera takes darker photos and the phone lighter photos. I prefer the darker as I can lighten them easier than taking down the brightness. Nonetheless, today, almost every photo seemed a good one. I also learned that the photo editor on Google photos is not nearly as good as the basic editor I use on Windows photos so I downloaded the phone photos to my computer for editing. We'll see how that works in the future.

The documentarian in me did a lot of that on this hike (photo documentation); thus, because of all the pics I made a slideshow. It was a bit of a hassle as I relied on the auto creator that did a so-so job. But the music is top notch thanks to @LosDosSloFolks, altho I ran into a copyright glitch so had to change out some of his songs. Oh, the movie of the hawk catching the thermal is at about the 2 minute mark; it's pretty cool.

First time back in the McDowell Mountains after a couple years. The coyote canyon portion was fun and interesting, the rest of the hike was pleasant but very flat. Lots of vegetation as well as hawks and a deer. This would be a great trail to bring kids and new hikers.

Very nice day for a hike, but we wanted something interesting but not too demanding. The area around Granite Mountain sounded just right. Used a bunch of trails to construct and easy 8ish mile route. A few folks on the trails, mostly close to the trailhead. Enjoyed all the granite outcroppings and Coyote Canyon was a nice surprise.

Spent the morning looking for butterflies with Master Steward @ezpixels (she is not active on HAZ anymore - but she has a wildly popular Instagram gallery). Also two other MSC Stewards from class #7 - which is way back in 2004. Marianne has made a butterfly identification brochure for two purposes: raising money for MSC (you can buy a copy at the MSC office on FLW Blvd) and for all the McDowell Sonoran Field Institute citizen science volunteers that will be participating in a large butterfly ID field study in a month or so. There is a training session that is open to the public to learn how to identify butterflies -- even if you are not citizen science and cannot participate in field work. You do have to register b/c space is limited.

Anyway....it was very dry and only saw a couple of butterflies. But we had a nice leisurely walk along Dove Valley trail and into Coyote Canyon trail. We all parked at Granite Mountain TH and had a very kind driver take us up to Dove Valley step-over and picked up later.

At the end one of the stewards brought us all mesquite flour cookies and other goodies made from desert flora - - ethnobotany for chocolate lovers

As a side note - just for my own journaling documentation - the person who convinced me to become a MSC steward was @ezpixels after we had "known" each other on Instagram for a year. I would send her trail condition updates and ask her about flora/fauna. She convinced me that I didn't have to be retired to be a steward and any hours I could contribute would be helpful even with busy work life and kids/husband to look after. I am so glad that I took her advice and TODAY September 13th is my one year anniversary with MSC! Should have joined years ago...

The Turtle needed to get off of the concrete trails and do something different. I showed him some boulders ans saguaros.

We hit up the Northeast portion of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and some new trails or both of us. Once again got lucky with the weather. Upper 70's to start, probably low 90's to finish. Clouds filtered the sun and the breeze blew just enough to keep us cool.

The Coyote Canyon Trail was a pleasant surprise and interesting area.

Lots of Doves, Quail, Rock Squirrels, but that's about it. 2 bikers, and 3 hikers were all we saw.

Good hike Mr Turtle... Lets get that arm healed so we can get you on some other hikes.

** Note to future hikers that want to hike out of Trailheads on the Eastern side of this complex. There is No Parking at any of the Trailheads, other that the Granite Mountain Trailhead **

Bruce and I hit some more MSPN trails. We got a late start but the humidity seemed lower today. We also had cloud cover from time to time. I always like when there are boulders mixed in with the Saguaro. We saw a couple male Cardinals flying in cicrles along with lots of Quail, Dove, Rabbits, Squirrels, and a few lizards. The trail was in good shape and only saw a few people. Bruce even pointed out a couple of nice Crested Saguaro 8) ! Nice local area and the company was top notch. :y:

We went to check out some of the new trails in the McDowell Preserve far north area (thanks to Crzy4AZ for posting the link to the updated map)

Hawksnest :next: Old Paint Wash :next: Soapberry :next: Coyote Canyon :next: Granite Mtn loop :next: Cow poke :next: Dove Valley :next: Barb’s :next: 136th St Express

Hazy views to the east, cleared a little but the mirror was still cloudy. We saw another water catchment 'tank', still had a little water.

The trails were pretty quiet - we saw a few bikers and 2 equestrians.

Since I already hiked my monthly goal, decided to goof off today. Went to dove valley pseudo TH. There is one car already there and parked behind it. Later on found out that I blocked the gate :o . Sorry preserve folk. Someone left a very nice note on the gate now asking not to block it.
Did the loop ccw and there are no signs still. I followed 2 hikers first. Then stopped at the water tank which has no water despite rain :( . Saw a hunter and had a nice chit chat. He is hunting quails and really wants the big buck lot of people already told me about. He said there are 2 more weeks of hunting season left.
Off I went and ran into another group of hikers. My third time seeing that group this winter and chatted a bit. Then I kept going marvelling the beauty of coyote canyon. Saw lots of sps of fern there(should be nick named fern canyon). Wild flowers are starting :y: . Glad they don't move around like fauna :sl:
Saw no one else in the canyon. Heard horse like sounds twice. Looked around bit saw no horses or any other wildlife :?
As I am on granite mtn trail, there is a flight school helicopter practicing all sorts of feats. Glad I was not in it :)
Had a secret wish to see large animals today but no sightings :(
On the other hand, I photographed a new bird for me-abert's towhee :y:

1st trip
I started out at the Fraesfield TH. I was the only vehicle in the lot. I headed down the Gooseneck trail to where I left off the previous week.

I explored Redbird / service road connectors before heading back on the Redbird trail. When I went past the Fraesfield TH, the lot was half full. The mountain bikers came out in full-force at 10am.

I headed North by taking:
Blackhills trail
Bootlegger trail
Granite Mtn Loop trail
Cow Poke Trail
Dove Valley trail

I explored on the old BLM roads that are now part of the preserve. I went the Tonto forest Granite MNT boundary. There are numerous old BLM roads in this area. It looks like there are plans for a numerous new trails. I seen a bunch flagging for new trails.

On the way back I took the new Coyote Canyon trail. This trail is a loop that connects the Dove Valley trail with the Granite Mtn. Loop trail. The Coyote trail starts off is a cool canyon. It's about 90% done. The trail sign is taped on a post and one of intersections has a post without a sign.

I took the following trails back:
Granite Mtn. Loop trail
Bootlegger trail
136 Street Express trail
Morning Vista trail
Black Hills trail

The weather was perfect. Even though you're in a city park, you can get to the middle of no-where and explore. The Tonto Forest connection opens up a lot of possibilities.
