Met my buddy Dan and his buddy Dan for some west side Browns Ranch trail riding out of Pima Dynamite trail head. Perfect temps this morning. Lots of hikers and bikers. Woman with a beautiful poodle. Lots of puddles on the trails.

Wanted to check out trail at the Pima Dynamite Trail, so hobbled together some trails to make a 10.6 mile loop. Trails (in order) are:
01. Hawknest Trail (0.4+0.8+0.8+0.2+0.2+0.5+0.5+0.1+1.5) = 5.0 miles
02. Basalt Ridge Overlook (0.1+0.1) = 0.2 miles
03. Basalt Ridge Trail (0.3) = 0.3 miles
04. Upper Ranch Trail (0.6+0.5+0.1) = 1.2 miles
05. Rustler Trail (0.7) = 0.7 miles
06. Latigo Trail (0.1+0.6+0.4+0.4+0.7+0.5) = 2.7 miles

The land is pretty flat in this area, but the clouds made for some good photos. Also of note, the Hawknest Trail GPS associated with the guide doesn't seem to come all the way down to this trailhead, but the official map and actual tracks show it does, so I think this may be an additional amount of trail added to the Hawknest trail.

I'll upload the loop track.

My first time hiking in this area. Nice smooth trails. Outstanding desert flora and fauna.
We got started hiking soon after the gate opened to cool dry air for a change.
Flushed a white tail buck along the Axle Grease trail. Then we saw a group of Harris Hawks sitting in a dead tree, which was very cool.
We hiked up Cone Mountain off trail and ran across a desert tortoise on the descent. To top it off, Kelly spotted a Gila Monster along the Latigo trail on the return. Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

wanted some mileage without much elevation gain, since my right knee has been bothering me a bit this week
hadn't hiked from the new dynamite and pima trailhead yet, so thought this would work
john signed on last minute
we were early for the gate opening at 0541 and got going soon after
axle grease to hackamore to cone mountain trail
john wanted to hit a peak while in the neighborhood, and he led an off trail route up cone mountain, which was a new summit for me
i've been up most of the other north preserve peaks
returned via upper ranch, rustler and latigo trails
double digits but less than a thousand feet of gain
knee was fine
three new trails for me and nice to go from a new area
the best parts of the hike included cool temps, large healthy saguaros and ocotillos, and quite a few critters: harris hawks, a buck, a desert tortoise and a gila monster :)
thanks for coming along, john - fun morning

*just looked at an old triplog
guess i've been up here before :-k

I participated in my first ever Christmas bird count aka CBC. I get a kick out of those initials since they mean complete blood count to me :) . Prerequisite is to attend a workshop held at Audubon center by Troy who is with az game and fish and is also a member of az field of ornithology. Since it is my first time, I learned a lot in the process :D
Workshop was on 12/10th this year held at Audubon center in Phoenix. I learned that there is no exit to central from hwy10. By the time I realized it, I overshot to 19th ave and then had to trace back using local roads :( . Troy Corman works for AZ game and fish.....In a section overseeing CBCs. He gave a nice power point talk and I am including a few slides here. They divided the area into circles and try not to overlap the dates of counts for circles....so people have a chance to participate in more than one count. They used to do an area near downtown Phoenix but decided to stop it as they noticed greatly reduced numbers of birds :o Troy taught us how to estimate numbers if you see a huge flock of birds. I enjoyed learning about it although I don't get to practice that skill in the preserve. Typical areas that attract massive quantities of birds are agricultural or riparian which are not part of Preserve. Whenever there is a flock of birds, need to pay attention to all the birds as there will be more than one sps and often rare birds are mixed in. Need lot of patience to look at all the birds.....I learned this last year as I used to assume that when I recognized one sparrow in a flock, rest are all the same. Birding with Walter, I now learned to pay attention to all of them....but I still need to work on my patience.
The day of our count is scheduled on 12/30th. We got our instructions before hand. Since there were enough stewards, they decided to add a new area in northwest portion of Preserve to the count. Our instructions included our trails that I glanced briefly and knew that it would involve power lines and cone mountain. Since our circle starts at power line, we can't include any birds we see at TH or parking lot. We start and finish the count at powerlines. Once we are inside the circle, we can report any birds we see from there. Since rain is in the forecast this week, I was watching the forecast closely....was going to cop out if it rained. But luckily no rain until tonight so I showed up. It was windy and sunny with pleasant temps. Windy means fewer birds :( Our group only had 2 stewards.....myself and Lisa, an experienced steward. We had 2 visitors from tonto NF. I learned quickly why there were not more stewards in the group.
As a person with camera, my job also included photographing esp birds we could not identify so that they can be reviewed by others. Troy recommended every group to carry at least a camera, binoculars, tripods...etc. We had a young intern that carried a tripod and other two had binoculars. As we were moving on, I realized that the powerlines also exist wayyyy behind cone mountain which is where we had to go from the powerlines in front of the mountains. :scared: ...hence the mysterious absence of other stewards. We started around 7.30 and took a lunch break around noon where Brown's mountain trail ended at second set of powerlines. I am pretty sure we all received a healthy dose of radiation......we were entertained by Harris hawks and some bikers.
The stretch of second powerlines is new to me....so I really enjoyed that area which is filled with boulders and lots of washes. I will definitely go back there. The trail where the powerlines meet cone mountain is not recognized by conservancy but is well defined as it is used by bikers a lot.
Once we got to cone mountain, it was around 2pm. We still have over 3 miles to go :scared: I then realized it's been a year since I did a long hike. Actually I haven't been hiking much this season as I got busy with my new business. I decided that before my legs quit, I better take lead and charge forward. I became speedy gonzales......we are not seeing many birds anyway as it is middle of the day....no point in a slow hike. The rest just followed me....must have bought my logic. We ended it at 3.30.....with 21 sps. Underwhelming number for sure. But apparently last year, it rained in the middle of the hike so they actually quit the count at half waypoint. I don't know last year's numbers. I actually don't have a copy of this year's numbers but will update this triplog if I get the list.
Most number seen were phainopeplas. Uncommon birds we saw were crissal thrashers and Brewer's sparrows. Most complained bird was gila woodpecker. We watched 2 red tailed in harmonies flight.....may be courtship.....not sure.
Overall, I really enjoyed the hike. Learned a lot from others. Probably will do it again next year....but should train my legs. They had dinner at Hacienda's. I ended up not going as I had to nurse my legs and started to work on photos. Worked out for the better as I texted photos to Lisa who was with other stewards at dinner.....got answers pretty fast.
Question 1: I thought our preserve is part of cave creek count count circle but I keep getting corrected. Need to talk to someone about it.
Question 2: Is HV not part of trail system....I couldn't find it here to add.
This must be my longest triplog here....editing is hard when the triplog exceeds my screen size.....no spell check either
Final results are in my next triplog.

Conglomeration of several trails. Main goal was to do a loop involving Rustler's Trail. In on the Hackamore, then Rustler, then Wrangler and then out on Brown Ranch Road. Also did some off trail stuff that skewed the mileage quite a bit. True mileage for this loop would be closer to 4.0 miles. Weekday mid morning hike so trail traffic was somewhat minimal. Encountered about 9 people in the Wrangler/Rustler area but only a few others on the rest of the outing. Saw a jackrabbit and a coyote.

The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy has a Human Trail Count the third Saturday of the month on dozen trails. On going now for about 3 years. We count hikers/runners, bikers, equestrians in 10 minute time periods for 2 hours. I was on Rustler a not very popular trail. One runner and three bikers in the 2 hour period.

Participated in McDowell Sonoran Conservancy monthly Human Count conducted in 9 locations the third Saturday of the month. Counted hikers/runners, mountain bikers, equestrians in 10 minutes periods for a 2 hours between 8 and 10 AM. This is a little used trail and even on a Saturday I had only 6 bikers and 2 hikers pass by.

Used some free time this afternoon to knock off another 10 miles of the MSC All Trails Challenge, via mountain bike. Browns Ranch to Corral to Upper Ranch to Cone Mountain Loop to Hackamore. I left Hackamore to double back using Rustler, as there was no other way to mark Rustler off the list. Then I took the last segment of Cone Mountain, and repeated the route down Hackamore to the end.

Of these, Corral was easily the most fun, given the speeds my biking novice self could reach on its flat grade. Cone Mountain was a close second.

Rustler was both uphill and treacherous enough that I would enjoy hiking that in future rather than biking it again. I had to hop off the bike 3-4 times for the steep grade. At one spot, my attempting to bike it rather than walk across would have resulted in (a) certain comedy for anyone watching and (b) certain injuries for me. (Not something I've encountered with any other trail I've biked in MSP so far.)

Hackamore was a lot of fun. At the very end of Hackamore, there's a short trail not marked on HAZ called Sunset Vista Trail, leading to the parking lot. I'm not convinced it's worth the bother to add it. The official MSP map doesn't recognize it either.

I think I'm somewhere around 70 miles of the 133 ATC goal. Keeping track through HAZ and some ipad maps so I'll save the math for another day.

ATC challenge miles tally: 106.9/133

Needed to pick up some segments working towards All Trails Club 133 mark. I did a loop that my daughter would describe as "cray cray". But it was the fastest way to do pieces I was missing. I have absolute disdain for Powerline Rd #2 trail for some reason - maybe it's the ugly power lines or the buzzing above your head or the sandy slush. But I.will.conquer.my.hatred. @joebartels I wish there was a negative number on the trail rating scale for "awful".

Clearly I have a good life that the worst part of my day is hiking Powerline Rd. So had never done Rustler and it has nice little granite boulder piles - and then Wrangler was quite pretty. Some ups/downs and Browns Mtn looming to left. I had done parts of Corral but not the whole thing - so circled around the top which is obsessively signed.

Top part of Corral is a lesson in yuccas - contrasting banana with soap tree. Otherwise just a regular trail - more for mtn bikers to extend loops that anything challenging or pretty for hikers. Saw a few MSC stewards at the TH doing Pathfinder who were not happy about Thompson Peak being on the ATC list, but nothing I can do about that.
