I was planning to park at the ATV trailhead at the north end of 136th St but it appears the road there is closed and the parking lot might be dismantled. There might be a one space there but I wasn't comfortable leaving my car there so I headed down to the Granite Mtn TH and did a hike from there.

I headed north on 136th St Express, NW on Dove Valley, south on The Divide, then east on Renegade back to Dove Valley and 136th St Express to the lot.

Only wildlife I saw were some hawks that made noise when I got too close. Saw a few other hikers and bikers but overall traffic was light, which was surprising seeing how many cars were in the lot.

Started from the Fraesfield TH and took the Black Hill Trail to the corner of the park and then headed north on the 136th St. Express, then made a counterclockwise loop with Dove Valley, Cowpoke, Granite Mountain Loop, Bootlegger,Turpentine, and Black Hill again.

Heading south on the Granite Mountain Loop Trail just north of the scenic overlook, there was a biker who stopped. As I got near him he pointed out the diamondback that he was waiting on. It was in the shade, coiled up and now nervous that both of us where near it. There was no way around since the trail is cut into an extremely steep and rough slope at that point. The biker went first, stepping up some rocks on the other side of the trail and using his bike as a shield. I then took the same route without incident.
On the Turpentine Trail I saw a fox but wasn't able to get a picture. I lost it in the brush but had my camera turned on and ready. And then it crossed the trail in front of me in a flash.

Temperature was cool at first, especially in the shade. It warmed up by the time I was done, but not nearly like it's been through the summer. Made very good time and kept up at a pretty good clip at 3mph due to the flat and smooth trails. Got nearly 12 miles done before 10:30am.

This week I did not forget to bring my GPS. Having brought my GPS, I had not forgotten to load today’s Maricopa Trail route. Instead, having arrived at the Granite Mountain Trailhead, I lost my GPS. (It was in my car.) Progress!

Though only 45℉ when I started at 7:20 a.m., it felt warmer. Not bad, really. By the time I finished around noon, the temperature was a toasty 75℉.

The best boulders and saguaro are on Bootlegger Trail.

Granite Mountain Trail is MTB-optimized to a ridiculous degree.

On Branding Iron Trail, the photogenic saguaro begin petering out, replaced by cholla and banana yucca. TD1, at The Divide Trail junction is the highpoint of this Maricopa Trail segment.

The Divide Trail heads north, slowly downhill. Rocky at first, it smooths out. I covered The Divide Trail’s two miles in only 44 minutes, including photos. Speedy!

Anybody know what the deal is with the park's “Phase 2C” trail plan?

Dove Valley Trail, an old jeep trail, heads towards the powerlines. I passed a hiker who said she never sees anyone out there. There’s decent mid-day shade in the washes.

There is a small OHV trailhead at the junction of FR 2090 and FR 513. The trailhead would be a good turn around point for an out & back from either Granite Mountain TH or Bartlett Dam Rd. Alternately, a Maricopa Trail segment from the OHV trailhead to FR 1058 would be about 8.0 miles. More importantly, the final segment to Bronco Trailhead would be significantly shortened to from 12.8 to 8.2 miles.

There were quite a few small puddles from yesterday’s rain. The trailside cheat grass has certainly enjoyed the wet winter monsoon, and the increase in fuel could bode ill for this year’s wildfire season.

There’s another OHV trailhead where the powerlines cross Bartlett Dam Rd. Personally, I’d stage my shuttle there, rather than trudge the final half mile to the Cave Creek Ranger Station. (Though the station parking lot had by far the best flowers: scads of red & yellow pea.)

I’ve now completed 230.81 miles of Maricopa Trail. Only one (?) tough segment to go!

Overall, desert flower coverage was light, but best along Bootlegger Trail and Granite Mountain Trail. Red & yellow pea were most common, followed by fiddleneck and blue d1ck. I found Mexican gold poppy (cinched up tight against the chill) and Coulter’s lupine on Granite Mountain Trail, Lindley’s False Silverpuff at both ends of Branding Iron Trail, and scarlet bugler on The Divide Trail. Also stork’s bill.

I need to start catching up on chores at home, so I opted for a local hike, which was still over an hour drive to the TH :-k . Anyway, I started from the ATV trailhead at the north end of 136th St, which serves just as well as a TH for hiking into this north part of the MSPN. I did a loop of 136th St Express-Hawknest-Stagecoach-High Desert-Renegade-Dove Valley-Barb's Trail-136th St. Just over 12 miles. Made great time since the trails are level and smooth. Started at 6:30am in the dark and took the headlamp off before the first mile was completed.

I saw 2 deer as I turned off the Hawknest Trail onto the Stagecoach Trail, but they never stopped at all so I wasn't able to get a pic. Then on the Renegade Trail I saw a javelina and had the same issue. Lots of hawks along the Hawknest Trail, I guess that's why it's called that.

Not much traffic on the trails at all, which was kind of surprising. I saw one other hiker ahead of me on the High Desert Trail, and about 4 bikers.

The ATV TH has some vehicles parked when I got there, but nothing crazy. 2 hunters were field dressing what I think was a dove. Didn't notice a shotgun, which would be the typical tool to harvest one with 8-[ .

I purchased some new hiking shoes and wanted a short flat hike to start breaking them in. (Prospects for #greatness @LindaAnn  ) The Granite Mountain Loop was the plan but it was an absolute zoo. I've never seen that parking lot so full and on a weekday no less. We have seen a lot of HAZr's posting the trails to the north of the mountain so that's what we did. This loop came up on HAZ's "Auto Route Display" feature and Cathy gave it the thumbs up.

The guide published by @Crzy4AZ showed limited parking at a small TH farther north on 136th St. but the city has recently posted "No Parking" signs on all these step-over entry points around the park we found out. :(
We drove back to the south and found a spot on the side of the road that appeared legal and hiked back up to the TH @ Dove Valley Road.

The loop was a real gem with decent tread most of the way. The Coyote Canyon Trail reminded us of Blue Wash up by Camp Creek Falls, lots of granite walls and running water to boot. This would be a terrific hike for out of town guests. The superbloom was strong at this location although the cloud cover kept the poppies closed up.

Joined a meetup which showed 7 going. Where did the extra 20 come from? The opposite of the expected. Less than an hour to get there but knew I would have to extend this one out.

Coyote canyon was a unique setting. A lil over 4 miles into a proposed 7 miler, I bolted from the group. Didn't wish to repeat a couple of recent trails. This allowed me to explore a rarely used area.

I then took cowpoke trail back and formed a double loop. Some pretty scenery + a crested saguaro fairly early during this outing. Till next time...

3-25-2022 (would have been my father's 95th birthday). This is delayed, but not on purpose, as life got in the way... that and technical glitches. Oh, and if you tuned in to see if I was with Joe, Bruce and John; you will be disappointed. This is a lot easier version of what they did.

I drew out a bigger loop to try and get some extra miles and take advantage of maybe, getting more wildflower pictures on March 20th. The weather was a tad dicey but ended up being nearly Tibber-perfect for one of the best photosets I have shot in a while. Seriously, it's all about the light! Nearly every photo was so good it made me giddy :D . The hike itself was fabulous as well. I'm at a crossroads where I can't decide if I want to hike for speed or for the experience; it's hard for me to do both. Now that I'm retired, one of those decisions I didn't think I'd be facing.

I started up Powerline Road. I passed by a docent before stopping to take a picture of a tall Soaptree Yucca. The docent passed me. When I caught him I asked if he was hiking arbitrarily or had a route. He was doing the Turpentine/Black Hill loop. I continued on my way until I noticed a gathering of Fairy Duster and then saw a Roadrunner land so I snapped a couple pictures. The Roadrunner was pretty fast so only got his backside. I mentioned it to the docent and he says they rarely see Roadrunners out here.

As I veered to the right, north, I heard and then spotted a male Phainopepla and zoomed in for a few shots. I hooked up with the Granite Mountain Loop Trail where I started encountering lots of great color; especially with the partly cloudy light and of course, lots more people too. Needless to say, I got bogged down taking pictures and dodging hikers and bikers. However, the flower show is very, very light compared to normal; especially the lack of poppies and lupine ground cover. What was there for the next half-mile was very pretty and lush with the Chuparosa and Brittlebush.

Next I saw a couple hawks high in the air. For awhile, they were hovering side by side riding the thermal. I tried to get a photo but this camera will not take the shot until its focused on the subject. I did get several photos but mostly enjoyed just watching them. This funny substance started dropping on me but not enough to deter me from continuing. I checked out the Siamese Twin saguaros which are growing up nicely. Along here were some small wildflowers including Owl Clover, Popcorn Flower, and some Lupine along with that little yellow belly flower.

There was also that mystery flower with the green bottom and dried tall top. I sure hope somewhere along the line I will be able to ID the flower. The other dried out flower that looks somewhat like a bull thistle of some sort; I think that's what it is. I was able to get a really good picture and turned it into black and white; a thing of beauty now. I made my turn on the Balanced Rock Trail and climbed up from the back side. On the other side, I took a picture of a bike rider which turned out pretty cool because of the sky above; should have taken one on my phone.

I continued west and south to eventually reach the Cholla Mountain Loop taking mind of the weather to the south and west, making for some pretty cool photos. I would stop and listen to the wind as I went by different trees or cactus. The wind sounds much differently when you stop near some object that's capturing its cooler sound. This happened again as I was near the Coyote Loop on the north side of my hike. I was glad to have the wind at my back as it seemed a bit warmer. It's been a while since I've been this close to Cholla Mountain and the foreground views provided great entertainment.

There were two different sections going on this part of the trail, an Ocotillo area and a Crucifixion area. A little past this were some blooming Banana Yuccas. I would see a few more of those in the next few miles of my hike. Of course, my eyes are also drawn to the occasional light on Granite Mountain. Once I started hiking on Branding Iron Trail you could see the very stormy weather in the Mazzies which, once again, provided for great pictures. I also spotted a rock window that had a saguaro on the other side of it, very 8) . It's one of those things that if you don't look the right way you will miss it. I eventually came around to its other side and there is a path up to the area. It's also interesting that there are signs up on old trails that basically say, travel at your own risk. I would see four of these.

Next I joined back up with the Granite Mountain Loop which was familiar territory for me as I've hiked this loop in this direction a few times. There was great light on one of those Whitethorn Acacia trees; those thorns are simply stunning. I did look over to what I call Cholla Hill and saw three downed saguaros so I stepped off trail to get a picture; being mindful of snakes.

And now, onto new territory, Coyote Canyon Trail. Here I found a butterfly more or less sitting on a flower but no luck with my focus on it. But, I did get some very close shots of a squirrel that seemed to be posing so that I could get the perfect shot. Just a little bit later, I got to circle the double Crested Saguaro cactus :) . It is a nice healthy specimen. There is also another trail junction here. This trail was a continual surprise. I don't know who designed this route but it was a delight. And they call this a Canyon for a reason. Apparently on the previous trip reports/pictures, I must have missed this or forgotten what a treat this was, certainly unexpected for a desert hike.

I meandered my way and came upon a sign that said Dove Valley Trail; altho I thot this was all Coyote Canyon Loop; which perhaps it is with this trail thrown in as part of the loop. As I headed south you hike near where there is a grass pool to your right (west). I thot it was Bootlegger Tank but it wasn't as that comes up later. I don't see any name for it so it must just be a low laying area. There seems to be other trails that shoot off from here so I'll have to check them out in the future. This is a fun area to hike. I passed the intersection with the Cow Poke Trail as I headed east on the Dove Valley Trail (former road I think). In the distance I could see the sun rays shining down on Granite Mountain so I kept an eye on that to see if we'd get some bigger rays and over a larger portion of the mountain.

I finally made it to 136th Street Express Trail of which I had low expectations but once again, was pleasantly surprised. It zigs and zags and bypasses Bootlegger Tank which is empty but pretty good-sized. I started seeing more bike riders as I had since getting on the Dove Valley part of the trail. Lots of great scenery but I lost my light; though I did get a picture of a Mockingbird and then later, a rabbit by the TH.

It's hard to believe the elevation is 1500 feet higher in places so near where I live, which makes me think I could hike out here, even if it's warmer. My legs were pretty sore from my Barbell class the morning before; that always surprises me as I workout at least three times a week and this was my second Barbell class in as many days. It's not painful but I do feel the soreness in my legs. You would think hiking would loosen up your muscles but that doesn't seem to work for me. Nonetheless, a fabulous day on the trail and I had a lot more left in me; but with no elevation to speak of, I better  .

TMI: Most of the pictures I took with my regular camera but I figured the phone would do a decent job of the landscape photos just because of the light. It seems my camera takes darker photos and the phone lighter photos. I prefer the darker as I can lighten them easier than taking down the brightness. Nonetheless, today, almost every photo seemed a good one. I also learned that the photo editor on Google photos is not nearly as good as the basic editor I use on Windows photos so I downloaded the phone photos to my computer for editing. We'll see how that works in the future.

The documentarian in me did a lot of that on this hike (photo documentation); thus, because of all the pics I made a slideshow. It was a bit of a hassle as I relied on the auto creator that did a so-so job. But the music is top notch thanks to @LosDosSloFolks, altho I ran into a copyright glitch so had to change out some of his songs. Oh, the movie of the hawk catching the thermal is at about the 2 minute mark; it's pretty cool.

Wanted to get a hike involving the the Dove Valley Trail. Over the years I had incorporated parts of this trails on various loops and was not impressed. I was not looking forward to knocking out this trail….it is “Powerline-esque”; a fairly broad path, that takes the hills straight on. That being said it was not as bad as I anticipated.

Started out a little before 6am from the Granite Mountain TH. Took the 136th Express to the beginning of the Dove Valley Trail. The Dove Valley trail is actually accessible from 136th st. - there is a gate there to the road - but there is no official parking at this location. The Dove Valley trail takes off in a west northwest direction. There are rolling hills as it heads in this direction, and as I said, it takes these hills straight on. This is one of the more direct trails in the park. Very little twisting and turning. As the trail joined up with a large wash I was pleasantly surprised today to see water still flowing in the wash. A sight which I am sure is not commonly seen. The trail crosses quite a few other trails as it heads west, making it ideal for looping options. The Dove Valley actually brushes the northern edge of the preserve (a fence denotes the boundary), before zigging south for a short stint and then zagging north again to reach a gated entry point into the preserve. This is where the Maricopa trail enters the preserve from the Seven Springs area. From here the Dove Valley trail continues west until terminates with the Powerline Trail #1. The brief write up for this trail has it .25 miles. It is actually closer 4.7 miles. Quite a few of the trails have morphed over the years as the preserve has continued to expand. This is one of them. I think this trail is done “expanding”. But never say never with the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

From this point I utilized numerous trails to loop back to the Granite Mountain TH,….Powrerline #1 - Broken Spoke - High Desert - Corral - Dry Gulch - Cholla Mountain Loop - Balanced Rock - Granite Mountain Loop - Granite Mountain Trail - and Powerline #2. The Powerlines were “blah”, but everything else was your typical high quality, single track Sonoran Preserve trail. It was nice to get this trail checked off the list. But it honestly wasn’t that bad. It would be worth another visit sometime in the future. Muggy today   When I was done even my socks and shoes were soaked! as if I had been walking in through water. (There were puddles on the trail, but they were all easily avoidable). Met one trail runner, only several hikers and over 20 bikers. Wildlife included numerous rabbits and one curious deer. :)

First time back in the McDowell Mountains after a couple years. The coyote canyon portion was fun and interesting, the rest of the hike was pleasant but very flat. Lots of vegetation as well as hawks and a deer. This would be a great trail to bring kids and new hikers.

Mother’s Day hike with the kids! Had just rained. Saw double crested saguaro and Michelin Man cactus. Best gift I could get is a hike together !! I carried George for a little bit - has strep throat.

Brian and I did another shuttle hike, picking exactly where we left off 2 weeks ago, where the Maricopa Trail meets Bartlett Dam Road. We only followed the Maricopa Trail for 3.8 miles, where it reaches the northwest corner of the MSP North. from there we took the Dove Valley Trail over to the West Express Trail, then took that southwest until it turned into the Axle Grease Trail and hiked that whole trail. From there, we hiked a very short section of the Temporary Service Road (actual name given by Scottsdale), and then the temporary connector trail over to the Powerline Road #1 and down to the Pima-Dynamite TH.

I expected a lot more of this hike to be along dirt roads and/or service roads, but most of it was actually along a constructed single track. Most of this paralleled the powerline, and we did make a couple crossings. But actually, most of the hike was at least a half mile or more away from the powerline, so the views and overall experience along the trail was better than I expected. This was a very good way to reach some of the more remote sections of the trails up here without having to do a 15+ mile hike.

The trailhead at the NW corner of the MSP North looks like a nice spot to do some hikes and reach the newly built western sections of the Stagecoach Trail. But it does appear that the roads getting there are kind of rough. Going to have to do some further research and try to hike more of these new trails.

Saw one trail runner, one other hiker, and 10 or more bikers. The temperature never got too hot, as we were done by 11am and hiked mostly at an elevation of 2600'.

Been dealing with some knee issues the last 3 weeks, which started on the Arcadia Trail. The knee felt good thru the hike, although a bit sore. Afterwards it seems to have regressed a bit. Kind of sore, and the range of motion in bending it is limited. Old people problems seem to have found me.

My friend Nick joined me to explore some more trails in the Granite Mountain / Brown's Ranch area on Sunday.

In order, I rode: Bootlegger, Granite Mountain Loop, Branding Iron, The Divide, Hawknest, Dove Valley, Maricopa Trail (in Tonto National Forest, to Cave Creek Ranger Station, and then somewhat beyond, out and back), Dove Valley, West Express, Malpais, Hawknest, Buckshot, Corral, Dry Gulch, Cholla Mountain Loop, Balanced Rock, Granite Mountain Loop, Granite Mountain, Black Hill, Monument, 136th St Express, Cowpoke, Granite Mountain Loop, Saddlehorn, Bootlegger.

Nick rode all of the above with me, but returned via a more direct route when we got to the intersection of Granite Mountain Loop & Granite Mountain. My wife joined us for the first part of this ride, but ended up returning early as she whacked her shin just below the knee with a pedal. (It was quite swollen; she returned home to ice it.)

My main goal for the day was to look at more of the Maricopa Trail north of the Preserve Boundary. I rode some of it several weeks ago by myself. This week we rode it all the way to the Cave Creek Ranger Station - there is a spur trail which goes there - and then slightly beyond.

The section of the Maricopa Trail from the northern Preserve boundary to Bartlett Dam Rd is a fairly mellow singletrack. It's also fairly well beaten in, though not quite as well as most of the trails in the Preserve. It's mostly an easy uphill as you work your way north, with several wash crossings along the way. It crosses the powerline road three times. However, it also crosses several other roads and trails which seem to be popular with the OHV crowd. We saw (and heard) several motorcycles while we were out. There are a total of six road crossings (counting the powerline road, but not counting Bartlett Dam Rd) in the last mile of trail south of Bartlett Dam Rd. While there should not be any motorized traffic on the Maricopa Trail, there is definitely motorized traffic on these roads which cross the trail, so it's important to watch for cross traffic.

Nick and I rode to the ranger station in hopes of getting a map, but it wasn't open.

We started riding the next segment that goes northward, but we only rode out perhaps half a mile. In that half mile that we rode, the trail stayed close (even under) the powerlines and had numerous wash crossings, perhaps as many in that half mile as we had encountered during the entire 3.3 mile stretch from the Preserve boundary to Bartlett Dam Rd. These seemed deeper too, and the track was not beaten down enough for me to feel comfortable taking the downhill at speed so that I could coast up the other side.

When we returned to the Preserve, we took Dove Valley to the West Express Trail, which was new to me. West Express felt like an old motorcycle track (which it probably is). It was okay, but I like the new section of Stagecoach (which I rode last week) better. They both intersect with Malpais too. (I haven't ridden West Express south of Malpais yet.) The West Express Trail is more direct (shorter) than the new section of Stagecoach. Stagecoach is, IMO, better constructed and a lot more fun to ride. The other really nice thing about the new segment of Stagecoach is that it provides a bit over five uninterrupted miles of trail - there are no other intersecting trails from where it crosses the powerline road until it terminates/intersects with the Malpais Trail.

Towards the end of my ride, after leaving Nick, I rode north past the Granite Mountain Trailhead on 136th St Express and then took Cowpoke over to Granite Mountain Loop. I rarely ride these trails; in fact, I don't think I've been on them since another friend showed them to me several years ago. Cowpoke definitely goes uphill, but it's a surprisingly gentle grade to get up to Granite Mountain Loop. Cowpoke is also a very scenic trail with interesting rocks and numerous saguaros along the way. I should endeavor to ride it more often.
