Early morning out at Skyline. Don’t want to jinx it, but I really like the fact that this park doesn’t lock the gate. (I said the same thing about the Estrella Preserve and 6 months later the gates were in use :( ). Got to the trailhead around 4:45 and there were already 7 cars there :o . Getting a little dark to be hiking without a headlamp. I can see the trail, I just can’t see what is ON the trail. I started my hike by doing my daily reflections so my phone provided some light, but not a lot. Around 5:15 the sky was lighting up enough for decent hiking.

I took the Lost Creek up and over the saddle. The plan was to hike out to the Verrado TH using some use trails and then hike back on the flatter section of Lost Creek Trail/(road). There are 6 use trails and/or roads that take off from the Lost Creek Trail. I took the third, a single use path that took off to the north. There were a few splits in the trail and I tried to stay true to the trail that seemed to head most directly to the Verrado TH. Quite a few use trails in the area. A lot of opportunities to get “lost” and have fun in the desert. I did pretty well in choosing my trails, but I was stymied from reaching the Verrado TH by a new phase in Verrado construction. Looks like that whole area is off for the foreseeable future. :( Made my over to the Lost Creek Trail and followed as far east as I could to verify that it was closed as well. It was closed, no detours. Hiked back along Lost Creek and then took the first use trail (closest to Skyline Park) and followed that south. I followed some use trails and roads south. Ended up connecting to the Javelina Trail. Briefly followed the Tortuga Trail before following a road and then swinging back north to connect to the Quartz Mine Trail. Took the Quartz back to the TH.

The Lost Creek Trail is unexciting, but there is decent elevation and I enjoy playing on the use trails. I’ll be curious to see what happens to the Verrado TH……I wonder if their golf course is still open? Great weather for an early morning hike. Not many clouds out there today, but they seemed to be placed perfectly for my hike. Encountered 7 hikers and 1 runner. 7 of them in the first 20 minutes, all with headlamps. Wildlife minimal…a few chipmunks, rabbits and quail.

For some reason we decided to drive to east LA to hike.
Got started at first light. Beautiful morning.
Quite a few folks out hiking for a sorta weekday (Friday).
Nice wildflowers in some limited areas. Probably quite a few in another week.
Coffee then lunch downtown after. Thanks Kelly! :)

early start driving out to skyline
john and i got going around 0630
we cut down the big loop we did last time, leaving out javelina and pyrite
went counterclockwise this time
still double digits, decent elevation gain and linkage
i think either direction, the last couple miles drag a bit
john brought coffee for after and then bought lunch downtown - thank you!
nice morning

Completed 3 of 4 peaks 1 year ago. Created a route to knock out the final one, plus 2 other trails that still needed to be checked off the HAZ list. Only spot in town to elude the rain today. Let's do it.

Checked out Watson overlook at the beginning. Javalina proved to be the most difficult peak of the 4. Registry at top. Next looped around, added an extra peak and then headed back toward parking lot.

Challenge check, not many people and also met a couple of cute Doodles along the route.

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

Thought we would do a loop in the Eastern section of the Skyline park. I expected the 2nd part of the hike to bump along the ridgeline before dropping in a wash to the car, but really, it just went up a couple of washes and followed some roads. Also, the track in the Lost Creek section seems a bit dated in one section where you should keep on the road leading up the canyon and you will reach the same saddle location.

Exceed expectations a hundredfold. Weather was key with a nice breeze and fluffy rolling clouds. Despite being an old jeep road walk, the package essence of the area is uniquely appealing. The only notable fauna was a Red-tailed hawk screaming when I found the creek.

Brittlebush along the park road had the spiked hair look with former flower shoot stems galore.

The hills are covered in Erect Spiderling that is starting to die. My long sleeve attire may not have been the brightest idea sans breeze for an 11 am start in August but roll with the punches.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Skyline Park is remarkable. Forced myself over here because HAZ needed another new guide for the month. This little loop hike was much better than anticipated. The slight downside was the 240% humidity. Quartz Mine Trail hits a lot of positives with a near-effortless tread through continuously changing views.

Lost Creek Trail is an old Jeep road. My fabulous hike encountered the gasp I expected sooner. Yet the weather was getting nicer so the whining was short-lived. Started at 11:00 a.m. 88°, 84° at the top of the exhilarating 700 ft ascent. I made a rookie mistake not bringing a jacket and damn near froze to death as the cool breeze picked up with sprinkles ending the loop at 81°. Yeah, it's all fun and games until somebody needs help with their password and I'm shivering in the desert too cold to type.

AEG day for me, but you all know that when you hike with Linda  . She was kind enough to put together some route options and I invited Daytripper as he had not been in the area either. He had the longest drive so we wanted the hike to be worth that drive time and I do believe it was.

Linda had us do a warm-up hill first, Watson Overlook, before the very windy and slightly chilly hike on the Quartz Mine Trail toward Javelina which, of course, was the highest mountain in the Park. It was very typical desert around us though the level of flora was minimal. We did have great distant views and the sky was mostly clear.

On the way we passed four hikers as we made our way to the Tortuga Trail where we could start the climb up to the Javelina Summit. Fortunately it has some nice little switchbacks so I could catch my breath. Linda and Tom led the way but would stop occasionally to make sure I was still coming. The climb was not bad with occasional flat parts and of course the views changed as I switchbacked my way up. I wasn't fooled by the false-looking summits either. That last little scramble to the real summit was short; is a worthy summit indeed. The jets were out flying today off and on as well so that was fun to watch. The summit wasn't windy at all like the rest of the hike had been so far.

And now we had to go all the way down and seemingly 1/2 way back to where we started only to climb again. But I knew this would be the highlight of our hike so it was motivation to keep my legs moving up the Skyline Crest Trail to catch up with Linda and Tom; all the while stopping to get a photo or two. And we finally arrive at the Ridge only to have to go UP again to check out the Crest Trail. Here we took a snack break. It was interesting that the wind wasn't blowing on the summits.

The Skyline Crest Trail really is quite something with its display of rockery, the views and chubby cholla. I noticed that most of the traffic was coming toward us so that must be the more popular way to go. We continued NW and then SW on the Skyline Crest that truly is very ridge-like. We met up with the Lost Creek Trail and took it downward until we joined up with the Mountainwash Trail. Here I finally took off my down vest for this next part of the ascent which is on an old road. We reached another junction and Linda gave us the option of another 700ft or back to the TH. Tom went for the next 700, I remained here but meandered up the little ridge to wait for them rather than going back to the TH.

I enjoyed my little break and took several pics of them coming and going. I pulled out my umbrella as I had left my hat at Tonto 3. Soon I heard, saw and than photographed two hawks. I checked my email and saw that I got the Granite Park Chalet reservation I put in for on Monday; it's first come first served. I emailed my friend in Calgary to let her know as well as send her a picture of where Linda and Tom were hiking up the Valley Vista Trail. There were other hikers coming and going around this area as well.

Tom and Linda made good time and I hiked down from my perch to meet them back at the junction where we headed down the Turnbuckle Trail, cool name I think. This trail was pretty rocky in spots and we did meet a few hikers along the way until we finally hit the level again. You cross quite the bridge to get to the parking lot. I poured my AZ Wilderness Peanut Brittle beer into three glasses and we cheered the great day we had before heading home.

I took quite a few pictures as it appears the others were more into hiking. I called them the thoroughbreds and I was the old nag coming along behind  . I should also mention that from the various high points you could see all the way to the Sierra Estrellas and the Seven Mile Range and Table Top Mountain. You could see Woolsley, Saddle Mountain and the Eagle Tails and also Big Horn Peak. And of course, to the north and east you could see all the usual suspects. Skyline is a nice regional park out there and I'll be back as the drive isn't too bad for me, under an hour; altho it seems longer.

And when I got home, my friend in Calgary sent me the email that we got our reservation at Sperry Chalet :) which was also on a first come, first serve basis. To increase our chances we put in for workshops, Granite includes the workshop to the Ahern Drift along the Highline Trail and the Sperry includes a workshop to Sperry Glacier. Now we just have to fill in the hole between the two Chalet stays which means going thru the backcountry permit lottery March 15th. But I digress.

Nice hiking some new trails , pleasant weather but with occasional breezes to remind its still winter. Easy to find the trailhead the restrooms and picnic areas all appear new , also a nice bridge well designed to blend in with the environment leading to the trails, it even sports an out in the open campground. Thanks to Linda for figuring a route for us to follow in this maze of choices. Just to track distance I started route scout after coming down from the breezy Watson overlook, it tracked steady all day without reloading which has been occurring after photos lately, though it didn’t talk to me. Just as well so I could listen and learn about local landmarks, needing permits for Glacier Park and not to touch red dyed diesel fuel . Agree with other reports that they keep these trails well groomed with little vegetation, slopes on each side are loaded with cholla however so don’t roll off the trail. My favorite view of the White Tanks today was from the Javelina Summit. Saw very few other hikers with most in early afternoon as we closed in on the trailhead. Only took a few photos as I’m counting on Angela to come through, noticed her taking a few :D On the way down Valley Vista trail I thought I spotted a mysterious direct tv size satellite disc on a rock outcropping , as I came closer realized it was Angela having deployed her umbrella  For some reason there were other oddly placed hill top cairns around. The sound of freedom occurred repeatedly as the park is in line with the Luke AFB flight paths providing some visual entertainment. Again thanks to Linda it was nice to cruise along without needing to focus on directions, if it was closer I’m sure I would revisit often. FYI peanut brittle beer better than anticipated!

Met Angela and Tom at the surprisingly mostly empty trailhead just before 0830. Headed east on Quartz Mine, making the side trip to Watson Overlook. Very breezy, with cool temps to start. Continuing east, we got on Tortuga Trail, then up to Javelina Summit, which is a nice little climb.

Once back down, we headed over to Skyline Crest Trail, which I think is one of the best in the park. Another side trip over to the Crest Summit, where we had a snack. Temps were warming up by then, but still breezy. We enjoyed the jets from Luke flying overhead. Continued north on Skyline Crest, then west on Lost Creek for a short distance, then Mountain Wash for a short distance.

Once at the junction with Turnbuckle, Angela opted to wait for me and Tom to head over to Valley Vista, which we did real quick, then headed back to the saddle to meet back up with Angela. Easy hike down Turnbuckle back to the parking lot.

Nice day, not many people out on the trails, and great conversation. Nice to see Angela again, and good to finally meet Tom.

We did a near reverse of the grand tour loop I hiked with Linda and Denny in March 2019. The park was just over half full based on parking. It didn't pick up much throughout the day either. A fair percentage did the mut on a rope polka dance. Maybe two? mountain bikers and just a couple of low-key runners. Music sharing? was limited to one guy we figured we'd breeze by but he held well to a saddle. Everything still feels perfect in this park. West-Cali-Valley never disappoints. The unique Estrella view along with intriguing western views are worthy alone.

I was a little apprehensive about trying here, knowing that it could possibly be crowded. With a pre-dawn start and temps in the low 40's, there were only a hand full of cars in the main lot. about a mile or two in, we passed a group with 3 mothers and 5 or so 8-10 year olds. They were finishing up after a 5:30am start with their kids. Surprisingly, all in the group looked happy. On the Granite Falls trail, we never did see the falls. I'm not sure they exist.

First up was Pyrite Peak. Great views to the west and south. We continued our CW trek, loosing altitude, the sun behind the mountain and some warmth.

The saddle at the Valley Vista Trail seems to be popular and had the most people we'd seen all day. There was plenty of room to navigate safely through the 10 or so people there. At the Valley Vista Peak, we met a nice young lady (Karibou) and her German Shepard. She was quite impressed with Joe's Google rating. Swipe left for me. More good views here.

The third peak on the day was Javelina Peak. This was my favorite climb of the day. Steeper than the others and an impressive tread all the way up. the last 500' or so get noticeably steeper, but we saw a lady at the top with a small human in a backpack. This summit provides good views to the NE to the SE.

Overall impression of the park.
- The park was not too crowded and for anyone you came across, it was relatively easy to maintain at least 6'.
- The trails are wide and well groomed throughout.
- There is informative signage. I found that with the many, many trails out there, it was easier to consult the GPS for turns to keep on our planned route.
- Dog Friendly, we saw many, all on leashes.

Great temps (41-66), great trails for a "City" hike. Worth a try for any of you that are looking for something different, not too far away.

The main parking area and overflow into the horse lot was more than 90% full when we started around 0830. Warm, but breezy. Headed east on Quartz Mine, then north on Skyline Crest. Side trip to Crest Summit. Skyline Crest is quite enjoyable, one of my favorites in this park. West on Lost Creek for a short distance, then west on the north end of Mountain Wash. West on Turnbuckle up to the turn to Valley Vista. Always good views from Valley Vista, but the sky was very hazy. Retraced our steps back down to Mountain Wash, then took that back to the parking area. Only six cars left in the entire park when we finished around 1115. Hot by the finish, but the breeze helped.

Nice hike with the kids. From the main parking area, we headed east on Quartz Mine, then north on Skyline Crest with a side trip to Crest Summit. At the north end of Skyline Crest, we went west on Lost Creek, then west on Mountain Wash. up Turnbuckle to Valley Vista. Came back down the east side of Turnbuckle to get back to the trailhead. Easy hiking for the kids, and most of the trails we covered are in good condition. One kid complained a little due to being cold, despite two earlier warnings from me to wear warmer pants. Nobody froze to death. I promised them that this would be the last hike they’d have to do this year, but I don’t think they realize January is only two days away.

Ted and I took a ride out to Skyline and Verrado to check out the petroglyphs there and hike some more trails I've never hiked before. I-10 westbound had a closure, so the detour took a little bit of extra time.

We headed straight up the Mountain Wash Trail and the Lost Creek to take the most direct route to the Verrado trails. The heat was kicking from the start, so the beginning of the hike was a little rough, but the shade did help. Walking down Lost Creek after the saddle was steep, but then it leveled out and after nearly 2 miles, we settled in to a pleasant stroll, aided by a breeze.

We hiked straight to the Verrado TH, and then on the way back took the north half of the SOB loop, which goes by the big petroglyph rock. Looks like there was some graffiti damage on a few of the glyphs, so some pretty sturdy protective measures were taken to make sure no one can get within 10' of it.

After that, we headed back to the main trail to Verrado and hiked the long slog back up the Lost Creek Trail and back to the car. The 2nd ascent up Lost Creek was a little rough with the heat kicking in. Of course, at this point the breezes that had made most of the hike not so bad had immediately disappeared as we headed uphill.

Did only 8 miles, but with the elevation gain and the heat, that was enough for us today. Surprised to see as many hikers as we did, especially late in the morning as we here headed in. Went to Rudy's BBQ for another great post hike lunch afterwards.

First time hiking in Skyline Regional Park. I like it. Nice spot to hike for west valley residents. Looks like you can camp at the trailhead, but beware the maintenance guy had his leaf blower blaring before 6 AM. :o
Enjoyed the trails. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i did a modified version of @lindaann's outer loop
we left off the pyrite summit; will have to go back for that and part of quartz
smooth, easy hiking after last week's off trail : rambo :
quartz, tortuga, javelina summit, crest summit and granite falls were new to me
last time i was here, skyline was under construction [ photo ]
started at 0600, finished around 1000, eating breakfast at the brass rail by 1100, home by noon
not a bad morning at all :)

I took Denny and Joe's recommendation and explored Skyline this morning. What an amazing little park with a big mountain feel. I really enjoyed these trails, especially Skyline Crest!

Not sure where to look for flowers this week, and not having been to Skyline Regional Park in over a year, I decided schlep back out to Buckeye. In case flowers were thin in the White Tank foothills, I added the Verrado Petroglyphs to my route, so I could guarantee some interesting photos. I also added the Crest Summit Trail, hoping for extra elevation gain and some nice views. 📷

There were a ton of fluffy, yellow, desert marigold at the trailhead.

While getting ready at the Skyline Regional Park trailhead, I saw what I thought was a poo pumper truck. Not quite. As I passed by the restrooms — actual running water & flush toilets! — I saw the truck, next to which was a guy in a wetsuit & silver dive helmet, with hoses coming out of it. I thought maybe they were filming a commercial, but instead the diver climbed into a tiny pipe & disappeared! (I found out later that the diver was clearing blockages in the water / sewer line.)

Skyline Regional Park was not in “super bloom”, but on Mountain Wash Trail I did spot what looked like a pink lupine, globe chamomile, brittlebush (of course), and Fremont’s pincushion (?) — a white, difficult to photograph, flower that looked like a small carnation.

Flowers on Lost Creek Trail included California sun cup, scorpionweed, Mexican gold poppy, Fremont’s pincushion (?) and scads of lupine. I even saw one lupine patch growing in the middle of the old jeep trail! 🤗

SOB Trail is a marked, but apparently unofficial, MTB trail along the eastern boundary of Skyline Regional Park. It switchbacks 225 ft. in a mile to a saddle on the west slope of Hill 1976. SOB Trail then follows the contour for a ½ mile to Hill 1976’s east slope, where there is a rocky foot trail that connects the Verrado Petroglyphs back to the old jeep trail. SOB Trail was a pleasant stroll.

A razor wire-topped fence makes it difficult to photograph the Verrado Petroglyphs. Not only due to distance, with my crappy pocket camera, but also angle, as many of the etchings are high on the varnished rock formation.

I really don’t like rocky trails — they are hard on the feet, and there’s always the threat of breaking an ankle — but I followed it from the Verrado Petroglyphs 200 ft. down to the old jeep trail. In a ¼ mile, I was at the SOB Trail sign, back in Skyline Regional Park.

On the 400 ft. climb back up Lost Creek Trail, I was passed by a sheriff’s deputy in a weight vest. 😅

The handful of steep little 50 ft. climbs on Skyline Crest do not come close to justifying its “difficult” rating. It’s mostly level, then downhill to Quartz Mine Trail. (Done the opposite direction, south to north, the climb is 250 ft. in a ⅓ of a mile, or the same as moderate rated Lost Creek Trail.)

I loved Skyline Crest Trail! It winds along the spine of the ridge, each twist revealing a new, awesome view: southwest towards the Eagletail Mountains, south to the Gila Bend Mountains, southeast to South Mountain, and east into Phoenix. ⛰

Though not reaching “super bloom” levels, there were scads of flowers on Skyline Crest Trail: desert tobacco, desert globemallow, scorpionweed, desert chicory, and the only decent ocotillo I spotted all day. (Most ocotillo blooms I saw were fading to brown.)

At the top of Crest Summit Trail, I found a fairly smooth back supporting rock to recline against, and sat down for lunch and a hiking beer, while enjoying the spacious view.

I blasted through Quartz Mine Trail, 1.4 miles to the trailhead, in only 30 minutes. There may have been a few flowers on Quartz Mine Trail, but I had already got what I came for, and so wasn’t much interested in spending time looking. 😉
