Seeking another mid-week trip to the Rim for cooler temps, and today was just right @ 72-82°F.

Only after the hike last week did I realize we had covered that ground a few times before. So today I was looking to cover totally new ground, and with as much above the Rim that we have NOT covered, the biggest task was narrowing down the options. Once I chose where to start it was a matter of laying out a lasso loop which would hit a number of different trails/roads with a distance in the 7-8 mile range, which is what I've grown most comfortable with.

Nothing super special about this hike... it's a hike in the pines at 7500' of elevation.
We started heading North on Aspen Trail, onto Fern Gully, took left at Carr Lake Trail, then onto FR 9350 for rim views and back to the car.

Kind of weird... I only recalled one Aspen tree while on the Aspen Trail, and almost NO ferns along Fern Gully. Oh yeah, there was one area chock full of ferns on Aspen Trail well before reaching Fern Gully. Go figure!

Overall a nice 4 hour hike coupled with a 4 hour round-trip drive... home in time for Tracey to catch up on yard work.

Kelly wanted to do an "interesting" hike, so I chose this from several of her options.
The hike up to the rim warmed us up from the mid 30's morning temps. Hiking the few miles across the rim was a little uninteresting, but nice and quiet.
Fall colors were past prime in most areas, but still very pretty.
Didn't see anyone until the end of the hike.
Fun day. Thanks for lunch Kelly! :)

john picked this loop from a couple of fall color options today
we got going around 0800
mid 30s to start, no breeze, very nice hiking conditions, maybe mid 60s when we finished
east on highline, up drew, northwest on a combination of roads and trails, down see canyon
a few maples on the drive in, around the trailhead and along parts of highline
past prime oak and aspen up on the rim
we took a break about halfway along the upper section
see canyon was nice once we got down a few hundred feet
lots of prime maple trees
kind of hard to gawk while watching footing
we did not go to the spring today
saw one hiker near the finish, and quite a few people around christopher creek near the trailhead
well worth a visit to see canyon
thai food in payson on the way home
nice day, thanks john :)

I wanted to check out the fall foliage on the See Canyon Trail, so I decided to do a clockwise loop hike that basically went up to the Rim on the See Canyon Trail and came down off the rim on the Drew Trail.

Once up on the Rim, we made our way to the Drew Trail via the General Crook Trail and the Carr Lake Trail. After descending the Drew Trail, we made our way back to the trailhead on the Highline Trail.

Leaves were a mixed bag. There was a bit of color around the trailhead and on the See Canyon Trail for a short distance to the first creek crossing. Then almost all the maple leaves were green all the way to See Spring. Color started getting good on the See Canyon Trail about a mile past the See Spring Trail junction, and the maples were really nice from about 6,900 feet to 7,500 feet, or thereabouts.

On the way back on the Highline Trail, there were some nice colors also, but many of the trees along this section of the Highline Trail were past peak.

Synopsis
It was an enjoyable day in the Rim country, even if the foliage at the lower elevations of See Canyon weren't yet ready for prime time.

Route Scout added an extra 1.1 miles to the hike, so the stats above are those that I recorded the other time that I did this hike.
foliage observationfoliage observationfoliage observationfoliage observationfoliage observation
Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate
Foliage varied on the hike. Foliage was "substantial" on the upper part of the See Canyon Trail, but was "isolated" on the lower part of the trail and at See Spring.

This hike started out both cool and warm simultaneously because of the wind. The primary goal was the Carr Loop #412 on the rim, but I'm just not down with the fossil fuels rule cult or maybe just call me a lazy approacher. Those upper rim, forest bath loops just don't seem like a worthwhile drive, plus why not add some mileage and AEG. Similar to what The_Eagle described in his recent Mogollon hike, I also encountered a black bear, but in See Canyon early Saturday morning. A mile in, at dawn, the black silhouette was foraging within a rotted deadfall. At first, it didn't recognize I was there, then we locked eyes briefly, but fortunately it turned and hightailed up canyon. Of course, following the trail in the same direction I'm wanting to hike. I haven't had many wildlife encounters that get the juices flowing more than encountering a bear solo, eight feet eye-to-eye. Onward, you only live once! Regardless of what people have said about the See Canyon Trail being worked, this is still an obscure route. There are at least ten large deadfalls crumpled across the trail and a lot of overgrowing vegetation. The core part of this canyon seems even more wild than quite a few of Arizona's designated wildernesses. I'm all for multiuse trails, strongly believing each group can coexist. However, there's an Allfails route that lists See Canyon as a mountain bike descent route. Good luck with that! I think this one qualifies, similarly as the MLC in SoMo, in that please carry your bike elsewhere. The General Crook Trail section near the Promontory Lookout Tower has been almost completely destroyed by a recent logging. It is now obscure and difficult to follow in places. At least I thought this was the General Crook Trail, since both Allfails and HAZ route this trail section on different sides of the rim road. It's not a pleasant section to hike anyway, considering the hillbilly side-by-side action relentlessly producing noise and dust from the rim road. No clacking tree frogs yet either.

Hidden a ways back off the Rim Rd. Saw 2 hikers at da beginning who quickly quit on this trail. Be ready for route finding and tree hopping. Loggers have ripped up this area.

We found our way to an old road which ends at a major viewpoint. We then followed General Crook Trail before jumping on Carr loop. This portion is much easier to follow the path on. Happy trails.

Revisited this loop from a couple years ago for the annual rim lakes hike before 300 opens. There was still a lot of snow all over the rim, and I'd guess it'll be a couple weekends before it's open. I do think it's open as far as to get to Woods Lake. Two Sixty start with Highline to See Canyon.

The water in Christopher Creek is running off strong. To cross near the TH someone cut down a tree spanning the creek. Heading up See Canyon the only wet crossing was at the See Spring drainage, but it wasn't bad. See Canyon Trail is in the most deteriorated condition I've seen it in five years of going. There is significant deadfall, and the trail is eroded in spots. There was tons of water except in the middle. Still good snow higher up around and above the big waterfall.

Took Bear Canyon down. Deep, hard snow mostly the whole way, but I wasn't really sinking in or sliding on top. Great flow of water. Saw a dozen turkeys on top by 300 and a coyote at the edge of the lake. Hung out around there before climbing out of the SE drainage. I didn't head up very far and instead climbed up where there was no snow. Got on the roads and walked back to 300. There's still big snow drifts on 84 and presumably the road to Bear Canyon Lake.

Carr to Carr Lake, broke in the company of the many harmonizing frogs. Straight from the lake down the easy terrain to Aspen, then to Boulder Hop. The west side of Boulder Hop is a road turned creek bed then a disappearing line in the grass. Pretty easy to navigate the Hole in Ground area without it. Gen Crook through the hole then I climbed back up to 300 to avoid the big pool that feeds upper Woods Canyon.

Trickling and a little snow in the upper canyon, great flow below the dam. The lake is at something like 101%. All the feeder drainages are pouring in. Pretty much had the place to myself, apart from some distant silhouettes. The spillway is running off like a waterfall, so I headed down. Didn't get far in Woods Canyon before bailing due to snow on the slopes I wanted to climb out on farther down. Cut corners back to Meadow then Vista before Sinkhole. Saw a couple cars on Meadow and two men on RV.

Day 1:
Aspen/General Crook/208
I started from Carr Lake TH and took Aspen/General Crook/FR208 to head over to Bear Lake. It was a pleasant and easy hike although I was slightly disappointed that a trail called Aspen trail didn't really have many Aspens. I made it to Bear Lake early and hung out watching people fishing and just generally enjoying the nice weather and some foliage before heading out and camping nearby.

Day 2:
208/General Crook/Aspen/Carr Lake/Woods Canyon
My goal today was to make my way over to the dainage southeast of Woods Canyon lake (outside the border of the recreation area) where I was meeting up with a buddy. This involved some backtracking from the previous day but the weather was quite nice and the hiking quite easy. Most of the trails that Carr Lake system are really just abandoned forest roads. Again, disappointed that there were maybe two Aspens on all of Aspen. They were quite pretty when I saw them though. Eventually I made it to Woods Canyon and took the northern path around the lake. I've avoided this in the past (if you've read previously triplogs, you'll understand I'm not much of a people person) but it was relatively free of them today and really is quite a scenic area; made me realize I really should've brought my fishing pole. Eventually made camp and enjoyed the perks of backpacking near a store: I roasted the hot dogs I bought there and washed it down with a nice cold adult beverage before the rain came in. It started raining at some point, and I retreated into my hammock where I quickly fell asleep to the sound of it hitting my tarp, which it would keep doing all night.

Day 3:
My buddy had parked much closer than Carr Lake TH where my car was which was fantastic as the morning was 40 degrees and wet wet wet. I had forgotten to bring my gloves with me so as I was tearing everything down and packing it (which really meant just stuffing it haphazardly in my bag) my hands were freezing. We packed up quickly, though, and a short jaunt later were at his car for a lift back to mine. The drive back down was nice and foggy, which I always enjoy. Stopped by Common Grounds in Payson for a hot cuppa before heading home, ending a great little trip.

We got passed by a sleeper pinto heading up but squeaked by a couple parked? 18 wheelers. Opted to go counterclockwise because it's several degrees cooler in See Canyon. Worked out well too, it was noticeably cooler vs the east.

Experienced one of the Highline reroutes just before mile two. Meh, I prefer varied terrain, flat trails just attract creepy lurkers. Good news, shortly after, it gets back into a real trail. The Highline has never been a favorite of mine. Yet, even on what most would consider "too hot to be hiking" it's pretty nice going in and out of pines.

Not much of a breeze but plenty of cowbell heading up Drew. The flat crossover to See Canyon wasn't as bad as I feared.

The big fallen tree on the upper See Canyon Trail hasn't moved. A few other fallen tree workarounds and hop overs. In the upper third of See Canyon, we tried some seedy blackberries and the raspberries were tart and juicy. Further down, itty bitty strawberries were bomb diggity sweet!

Arizona Thistle and several large patches of green ferns symbolize summer in the vicinity. All-in-all a better than expected hike. My foot hurt yesterday after a flat 3-mile concrete walk. Tried Dr. Scholl's plantar fasciitis inserts today. A huge difference from screamer to bearable. I led* the entire way.

Another successful hike in the books in Rim Country. I love hiking near Payson and today was no exception. I mentioned the See/Drew loop yesterday to Joe and he was in. He wanted to go up the Drew and down The See Canyon Trail which seemed to work out well. I typically go clockwise on this one but really it makes no difference to me. The views from the Drew really open up as you ascend the trail. Once you top out it is just an easy if not a tad boring trip across the top of the Rim and then down the See Canyon Trail.

On the See we encountered some light patches of Raspberries (my favorite) and some of those little wild strawberries. Both were tasty! See Canyon is the show stopper on this loop in my opinion.

After the hike we headed to Payson and had some lunch at La Sierra. Good stuff!

Camped near the lookout tower up on the rim and started down See in the morning. No alarm clock needed, 4:15AM and those birds were on one. The descent didnt seem that steep at all, was pretty easy going down. About 1/2 mile down the bugs were real bad. Cant see ems in swarms, every time I brushed up against some leaves, it seemed like another hundred joined the main swarm as it continued down the canyon with me. At some point, you just give in and accept the uncomfortableness. Passed through some beautiful fern areas where the sunshine got to come though the trees and cliffs finally and you get that deep forest smell. It felt perfect. Christopher Creek was flowing nice the whole way. Lots of deadfall along the trail, I lost count of how many trees I hopped over. Passed the only other hiker I saw all day near See Spring. The highline section was awesome. LOTS of bear tracks. Beautiful trail. For the most part flat ground and soft dirt. More bear tracks. Great views once it climbs up out of the trees. The climb up Drew was very steep as expected, but nothing a few 30 second breathers couldnt get through and I felt very strong. The road walk back was uneventful and a little toasty but I did take a break on the edge of the rim becasue that's what you do. The lookout tower was all chained up but I could see the windows were open up there. Ill be back up here in a couple weeks for a real adventure.

See Canyon to See Spring, continued up canyon a bit, then decided to climb directly up towards Carr Lake Loop (this was very stupid, do not do this - last 200 yards was really crappy class 4 with high penalty points), but luckily I recovered from this and wandered around on the rim for awhile, then back to Carr Loop to Carr Trail to Drew to Highline. All numbered trails were in excellent condition. Only saw a pair of hikers and a lone mountain biker. Weather was great.

Nice cool start to the day, good trail conditions on the See Spring Trail mini detour, nice to see and hear running water, met 2 backpackers which were the only 2 humans we saw on the trails today, light water flow in Christopher Creek made crossing easy. Was really really hoping to see a bear today especially after being teased about carrying bear spray, well turns out they were deterred so well they stayed out of sight  Also received grief about bringing 3 hiking poles . Before the steeper portion of See trail nature is trying to reclaim it , ferns and locust are overgrown, had a couple of scratches to show for it. Upper portion of See is quite a workout, if you thought a 15 mile and 6k aeg hike already this week would slow down the energizer bunny you would be wrong but putting me in the lead did :D , I almost had a mishap with some deadfall along here too but only resulting in shoulder pain rest of the hike that’s better today . Nice views with a snack break on the rim edge before reaching the campground, while in that area @LindaAnn pointed out an odd thinning procedure the FS is using, cutting down the healthy trees and leaving the dead ones :? After the break I tried to get a head start by asking her to count tree rings on one of the recently cut trees but it didn’t stump her, good thing as I realized I didn’t know the route. Drew was for me the ideal trail to descend on plus shade and a breeze for a bonus, Highline was in good shape but there were portions unshaded and it was getting warm near the end. New loop for me and a great hike made better by marvelous company!

Headed up See Canyon Trail with a side trip to See Spring. Lower half of See Canyon is in good shape, upper half is in rough shape, and very steep. Some poison ivy around the halfway to two-thirds point. Once at the top, took a combo of Gen Crook, Carr Lake, and the road through the campground over to the top of Drew, stopping about midway for a snack break. Down Drew, which is in mostly good shape. Then took Highline back west to finish out the loop. Only saw two other hikers all day. Heard some turkeys, but no other wildlife. Good temps most of the way, along with a nice breeze. Very dry, but the area did get some light rain yesterday.

It's a fun challenge in April timing a rim lakes hike between the melting of the snow and the opening of FR300. Went as work permitted, and ended up going on the day 300 opened. Had The Rim to myself for most of the day. Wanted to loop Bear Canyon Lake and Woods Canyon Lake together and came up with this. Started at the Two Sixty TH around 8am and went clockwise.

Would have started at See Canyon, but I always save Highline for the end and wanted to give it a fair shake for it's best and most piney stretch. Mountain bike highway between the trailheads that winds between a brilliant forest of pine, fir, maple, and others.

See Canyon Trail had a little deadfall but wasn't as bad as last year. Water from Nappa Spring down and in the upper ~mile. some snow left in the canyon higher up but none on the trail. Decided to skip See Spring since it's familiar and there was so much else to see.

Topped out at FR300 and worked my way down Bear Canyon. Still a good amount of snow but nothing bad. Good flow of water. Just love it in that canyon, dense forest of huge conifers with interspersed meadows. Always a fun feeling seeing the lake at the bottom where the canyon opens up. Lake is full as I've seen it. Had it to myself and was going to walk round but decided to savor the south shore solitude instead. Left via the southeast drainage, which had less snow but a strong flow of water. Didn't hang around the bottom and worked up to the road SE and then up to FR84. Nobody on the road as I walked it.

Got down to Carr Loop which is not so much a trail but a road. Nice walk through the pines. Stopped at Carr Lake which was a nice stop, though won't draw crowds. Aspen Trail is similar but better somehow. Denser forest, the road is older or less maintained, so it feels less like walking on 300. Quite liked Aspen Trail but wasn't on it long before cutting over on Boulder Hop Trail to Gen Crook and the Hole-in-Ground area. Really beautiful area and probably my favorite part of the day. Beautiful weather for a break in the meadow and then off to Woods Canyon.

Woods Canyon is wider and easier than getting down Bear Canyon. Less snow, and there's a use trail the whole way down. Really scenic stretch of canyon from the road to the west of the lake. Planning on coming back and exploring east of the lake where there's a lot more to see. The trail around Woods Canyon Lake is in great shape with chevrons every so often. Really nice walk a couple hours before sunset. People were filing into the lake area, and I realized the road was opened. Rest of the trip was busy with car traffic.

Was going to continue through Woods past the dam and head to Sinkhole that way, but my feet were killing me. It's no shorter to use Meadow and Rim Vista, but those are less trails and more sidewalks, and I figured my feet would thank me. It's a really pretty section of open pine forest, but it was busy with car traffic.

Sinkhole was a nice way to end. Made for bikers, the tread is smooth and it's all downhill. It descends through the shade of pine trees. Got back down to the trailhead only having seen people in cars on the rimtop.

Wanted to do some more peepin. See Canyon and See Spring Canyon seemed like they should be prime. I also had a few things I wanted to check out up on top of the rim, so I put this loop together.

I was surprised at the lack of people at the See canyon TH when we started. Nice crisp fall morning to start off.

Up See Canyon Trail #184 we decided to go up See Spring Trail #185 and the canyon, to get 'er done before the forecasted rain. The trees for the most part, were in the early to mid stages of change. We'd bushwhacked down this canyon before and knew it'd be slow going. Snow melt and recent rains had the water running in most sections of the canyon.

This made what was a 15-20' dry fall we'd climbed down before, a no go. We opt'ed for a slow going high/right bypass.

Once up top, I'd been wanting to check out a couple things I'd seen on the Topo maps.

First, Rancho Alegro (Site). I could find nothing online, so boots on the ground it would have to be. Strike out, we saw nothing of importance in the area.

Bennet Butler on the Topo maps was nearby and next up. There were numerous buildings in a clearing and once again, I could find nothing online. This ended up being someones slice of heaven in the middle of Sitgreaves National Forest. What a nice layout and piece of piece of property. I'm guessing family owned before Sitgreaves became a National Forest.

Next off to Bear Canyon Lake where we had lunch. kinda quiet at the lake, which was nice. This was the only time it actually got a bit chilly.

We made our way over to the picturesque Beaver Canyon. Running water, open meadows and Elk jumping across streams, pretty sweet.

We followed a side canyon next to Rattlesnake ridge, until it got choked up a bit too much and jumped up on Rattlesnake Ridge. Spotty color kept us interested.

Dropping down See Canyon we enjoyed the best colors of the day towards the top. This canyon should be good for color for the next couple of weeks.

It's been almost 3 years since I hiked w/ 9L, good to hike with him again. Always good to hike with Cacklin' Karl and Joe Joe the wonder chimp.

Aspens were looking good, maples were starting, but still early. They were best in upper See Canyon.
