Took the fat bike up to Pima Dynamite this morning with the intention of doing a Rawhide Wash Browns Ranch Road kind of loop. Got a late start, but still rolling off before lunch. Took Rawhide Wash from the parking area, the first section out to Dixileta Road was nice sort of soft singletrack trail. From Dixileta it becomes deep, hoofed out, hell sand. Rode north as far as I could before I gave up and took Rock Tank trail over to Axle Grease. Took Axle Grease north to West Express, all of Stagecoach clockwise out to Cholla Mountain Loop south, Dry Gulch and Corral over to Brown's Ranch Road. I wanted to go east on Brown's Ranch Road, but ended up heading west, I guess it looked like less of a climb, I dunno. Found myself at Powerline #1 and headed south, picked up Hawknest, Hackamore, and Axle Grease back to the trailhead. I guess I lost my mojo today as I was spanked when I got back to the van. Light traffic on the trails today, a few hikers and some mountain bikers.

Roadtrip ride with neighbors Ben and Craig this morning out to Brown's Ranch Pima and Dynamite trailhead. Started with a general counter clockwise loop including Latigo, Sidewinder, Crested Saguaro, Sidewinder, Rock Tank, Dare A Sarah, Snake Eyes, Scorpion, Tarantula, Hackamore, and Axle Grease for a flash back to the parking lot. Some hikers and lots of bikers out on the trails. Perfect weather. Stopped to chat with a friendly preserve steward at the comfort station on the way out.

Third time is a charm! I was going to hit Pima Dynamite on Friday, but didn't, then I Sunday would be good, but it wasn't, almost bailed again today, but I didn't! Love the Browns Ranch trail system, I sure wish it weren't so far from me. Parked at Pima Dynamite trailhead and headed out on the twisty black diamond trails of the west side of the park. Latigo, Sidewinder, Rock Tank, Dare A Sarah, Snake Eyes, Scorpion, Tarantula, Hackamore, Axle Grease, West Express, Browns Ranch Rd, and all the way back on Hawknest. Saw an almost equal amount of hikers and bikers out on the trails this morning. It was plenty hot once I got back to the van at 10am.

linda drove us up to dynamite and pima this morning
set out around 0830 or so
nice temps, warming up enough for a wardrobe change after an hour
we did a variety of trails for some good linkage
some of the trails were more scenic than others
not much elevation gain to be had but good trail surface with excellent footing
more mountain bikers than hikers
about half the trails were new to me
thanks for hiking, linda, much appreciated! :)

*break time seems long, just checking route possibilities, ladies' room stop and moving aside for bikers

Kelly and I opted for some new territory on the McDowell North part of the preserve. Parked at the Pima Dynamite trailhead and got started. The parking lot was nearly empty at 0830. Nice temps to start, but it warmed up quickly with full sun and no breeze. Didn’t have any set idea of the trails to do, but linked up enough to at least hit ten miles. Everything was easy, with good footing. A fair amount of bikes, but only a few hikers. As we were finishing, there was a helicopter circling overhead, and plenty of emergency vehicles from both Scottsdale and Phoenix. More were arriving as we were driving out. Nice morning and good to knock out several miles with Kelly.

Took the gravel bike up to Pima Dynamite trailhead to ride some Brown's Ranch trails. Started on Latigo to Whiskey Bottle, Turpentine, north on 136th Street Express, west on Hawknest, and return on Axle Grease. Stopped to chat a bit with Tim, who was also riding his Salsa Cutthroat today. Lots of bikers and hikers out on the trails today.

Took the Cutthroat out for a gravel bike ride at Pima Dynamite. Saw some hikers nearby to Pima Dynamite trailhead and Browns Ranch trailhead. Didn't encounter any other bikers out on the trails. Stopped by Cathedral Rock for a photo op. Super fun fast flowy loop!

Friday light traffic got me up to Pima Dynamite trailhead at Brown's Ranch in a reasonable amount of time this morning, glad I made the effort! Few cars in the parking lot and even fewer people out on the trails. Stopped to chat with Lorraine who's returning to England after 20 years in Germany and the United States. A cool breeze complemented the fast and flowy trails, only some cloud cover could have made it better. Had the suspension locked out for most of the ride, should have taken the gravel bike, next time for sure.

wanted some mileage without much elevation gain, since my right knee has been bothering me a bit this week
hadn't hiked from the new dynamite and pima trailhead yet, so thought this would work
john signed on last minute
we were early for the gate opening at 0541 and got going soon after
axle grease to hackamore to cone mountain trail
john wanted to hit a peak while in the neighborhood, and he led an off trail route up cone mountain, which was a new summit for me
i've been up most of the other north preserve peaks
returned via upper ranch, rustler and latigo trails
double digits but less than a thousand feet of gain
knee was fine
three new trails for me and nice to go from a new area
the best parts of the hike included cool temps, large healthy saguaros and ocotillos, and quite a few critters: harris hawks, a buck, a desert tortoise and a gila monster :)
thanks for coming along, john - fun morning

*just looked at an old triplog
guess i've been up here before :-k

My first time hiking in this area. Nice smooth trails. Outstanding desert flora and fauna.
We got started hiking soon after the gate opened to cool dry air for a change.
Flushed a white tail buck along the Axle Grease trail. Then we saw a group of Harris Hawks sitting in a dead tree, which was very cool.
We hiked up Cone Mountain off trail and ran across a desert tortoise on the descent. To top it off, Kelly spotted a Gila Monster along the Latigo trail on the return. Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Early morning hike. Got to the new and improved TH (at Dynamite and Pima Rd) around 6am. All the trails that are in the vicinity of this new TH have had a facelift with how they interact with the TH and each other. As the preserve has grown the trails have changed and grown with it: Axle Grease being one of them. I think Axle Grease has finally reached maturity and will not change anymore. Starting from the north end of the TH it twists and turns for 4.6 miles where it terminates with the West Express trail. There are several trail connectors along the way where one can opt for a shorter loop. I choose to go to the end of Axle and then take West Express and Latigo back to the TH. Weather wasn't too bad though it was a little humid with very little breeze. Wildlife included quail, rabbits, lizards and chipmunks. Nice to have this TH up and running.

Now that the trailhead construction is done, the trails in that immediate area are also done, so I wanted to hike those. I started out heading north along the Rawhide Wash Trail. The initial part of this trail is a normal singletrack and not sandy as the signs say. The rain from the night before helped compact any sand there was once I got to the wash. Along the way on this trail I saw a cast of hawks that weren't very spooked and not in any hurry to fly away.

After Rawhide, I headed back south on the Axle Grease Trail, then looped back to the Via Dona, took that to Latigo, then a bigger loop via Latigo/Hackamore/Hawknest. The Hawknest, Axle Grease and Rawhikde wash trails were the ones that had the new sections finished as they head into the trailhead.

Weather was cool and cloudy at the start, then humid and warmer once the sun came out.

This was my first visit to Browns Ranch area, I know right. I took my gravel bike and I'm glad I did. While the gravel bike was a bit under matched for a few sections of Pemberton 2 weeks ago, Axel Grease to Malapais to Hawksnest to some other trails were perfect for the gravel bike. In fact, a MTB with front suspension could almost be boring here, but the gravel bike with 50mm tires is a roller coaster. I was able to test out my Redshift Shok Stop stem https://redshiftsports.com/products/sho ... nsion-stem, now that the LBS (plug for Bike Masters in Tukee, only place I ever go) removed my hydraulic brakes and replaced with cable actuated semi-hydraulic brakes. Game changer!
Testing some new American Classic 50mm Krumbein gravel tires, tubeless of course. I've only put about 100 miles on them so it's too early to tell, but they were easy to install, held air and sealant immediately, and I pounded them at Pemberton with no issues on fist sized to larger rocks. I wish I lived closer to this area.
