perfect day for one of my favorite Tucson hikes. Bone dry out there, otherwise just beautiful. Bear Canyon is a little overgrown here and there above the falls but nothing serious - just brushy.

Ideal day for this loop. Beautiful weather and tons of water everywhere. Even some snow on the East Fork Trail. I wasn't pushing the pace too much, and it wasn't the day for it with all the water in the crossings. Could see or hear water a lot of way currently, which is a real treat. managed to keep my feet dry until sabino road - several of the bridges were run over with water. Nothing to do there but plow on through

Bear Canyon: Trail is in fine shape to seven falls. Currently there is a lot of water in all of the crossings though i was able to make them all keeping my feet dry - though it took some work. Beyond the falls, the trail sees much less traffic. It isn't overgrown per se, but there is a lot of growth along the sides of the trail. Some it is catclaw-like and I was bleeding from a few spots by the end. The route is still easy to follow. The only tricky part is after the last creek crossing before climbing up the thimble flat - that is always a little tricky to find if you don't know where it is (quickly to the left and up the rocky incline). Up at the top about a mile before the Bear saddle there was some ice and mud hanging on. Someone came through on horses recently and tore up the muddy part of the trail a little bit. The upper parts of the trail have seen some erosion from all the rain the last year

East Fork: Never any route fining issues here. Bunch of hard pack snow on the trail but it wasn't very slippery. Again, torn up in the muddy spots from horses a little. Otherwise glorious as always. Little bit overgrown between palisade and box canyon but easy to follow still.

Sabino 23: No issues really. Pretty wide open.

This was my first time backpacking in the Catalinas and I will definitely be back. The weather was perfect, the views were vast and the trails were in great shape.

Starting at the main Sabino Canyon parking area, we made our way up to the entrance of Bear Canyon using a combination of the paved road and the actual trail. We passed a few groups along the way to Seven Falls but I would not say that it was busy at all. The falls were running and were well worth the short detour down from the main trail. After the falls the trail began to switchback up the side of the canyon and we really started to gain elevation. There is a great spot to stop for lunch when the trail crosses Bear Creek. From here it is a long climb up and out of the canyon. Once we joined up with the AZT we followed it through East Sabino Canyon, into West Fork and eventually Hutch's Pool. We camped here for the night and my thermodrop recorded a low of 34. I was awoken by rain in the middle of the night, which was puzzling given the totally clear forecast that we had beforehand. When I got up the next morning I discovered that we had actually gotten a little bit of sleet instead of rain.

The hike back down to town was relatively straightforward. We retraced our steps on the AZT before turning right onto the Sabino Canyon trail and eventually the Powerline trail. There was a lot more foot traffic on both of these trails compared to Bear Canyon the day before. I really loved how the Powerline trail stayed very high along the canyon wall. It was a great point of view compared to hiking along the paved road on the canyon floor.

i didn't get to run this with TTR for the anniversary year because i had to work. one of my local favorites. there was actually water all along bear canyon which was awesome to see. biffed about 6 miles in and took a healthy chunk out of my hand. it was a picture perfect day. historically i have always done the longer version of this, taking all trails.

I was planning to go with my friends to the Hellsgate Wilderness this weekend, but there was snow, and no way we would make the trip in those conditions. So after intensive negotiations, we settled on the Sabino - Bear Canyon Loop. At 17+ miles, it was 3 miles longer than I had done in one day in many years, and I told my friends they might have to carry me.

I am working my way through all of the Arizona Wilderness Areas, and was happy to see this trip took me into the Pusch Ridge Area wilderness of the Catalina Mountains. I could knock another one off my list. Unlike many of the wilderness areas I have seen lately, this is not a lonely experience. The wilderness boundaries are hardly marked, and we encountered lots and lots of people. But it is a pretty trip.

I hung up my federal lands senior pass in the car, and it was just light enough to go without headlamps when we left the paved parking lot.

I was wearing my AZT volunteer hat, and was acknowledged by an AZT steward we met going the other way in Bear Canyon.

We stopped for a few pictures and a short break at the viewpoint above the dry Seven Falls. It was a good news / bad news thing. No water flowing so all those crossings were dry. No water flowing so the waterfall was disappointing. At the switchbacks above the falls I noticed, we only have about 600 feet of elevation more to gain, and we had a great debate about how much it really was. I was really glad my companion's dire predictions of a climb did not come true.

At the top of Bear Canyon, we stopped for a long break for lunch and pictures. This was really the halfway point, and also pretty much the end of climbing for the loop.

As we dropped down into the canyon along the East Fork Trail / Arizona Trail, it became absolutely beautiful! It became relatively green, and there were trees and plants I rarely see. Particularly some trees of the white oak family I have not often seen. We saw several deer across the East Fork as well.

We turned into Sabino Canyon which starts with a brief climb, and then down. There was a lot of water flowing in the canyon. The views down the canyon are quite awesome, as well. We decided to take the road back, rather than the Telephone Line trail. All in all, this is a pretty easy 17 miles. The trail is in great shape, and finishing on the road makes the hiking very smooth.

According to the folks at Tucson Trail Runners (TTR) this iconic loop has been run by more runners over the past 50 years than any other big loop in the area. Plus it is one of the longest continuously run events in the trail running community. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the record being set on this loop, they put out the challenge to see who could break two hours. Because of storm damage to the trails in the 80's that's never been fixed, the record from 1981 of 1:51 will probably stand forever. TTR works with the Forest Service to make sure everything is legal, they do not collect entry fees, no prizes are awarded and there is no mass start. You leave in groups of 2-3 people to lower the impact and TTR works with the Forest Service to do lots of trail maintenance on any trail that they use. Bob Martin (who literally wrote the first books on peak bagging in Arizona) was part of the original group of guys that started this event back in the 1970's.

Started at the east end of the parking lot and took the road to the Bear Canyon/Seven Falls turnoff. To shave off a little bit on the return, the race course just takes the paved Sabino Canyon road from the end of the tram line. The winner this year did break two hours with a smoking time of 1:56, I brought up the rear about two hours later.

Be ready to literally dedicate the entire day to this 1. Woke 530 am, home 10 pm. I drove up from n phx. Completely worth it.

Once u get past 7 falls, u will find solitude. To your left u will be able to see the trails u just came from. When u get even further out, u will b surrounded by beauty.

The landscape will change and u will pass multiple junctions. All of which provide ample info. Great escape.

took advantage of lower than usual temps to squeeze this loop in one more time before the infero sets in. ran it clockwise for the first time and this way felt tougher to me. did a side trip out to Hutch's Pool for the first time in years...still gorgeous!

saw a nice big LOUD rattler on the way back from the pool. i think it was a mojave

got hot towards the end. the falls were jammin, but that is to be expected on a gimme weather day like today.

didn't feel too good today but had a lovely trip nonetheless

We have been wanting to do this loop for awhile and with the recent rain and snow it seemed like a good time. We were not disappointed with water in all the creeks and some of the side drainages. Starting from Sabino parking lot headed up Telephone Line trail to the Sabino Canyon Trail #23. The trail is above the canyon but we could see the large pools all the way as it makes it’s way into upper Sabino. Once at Sabino east and west fork it crosses the creek with plenty of water here and then up the AZT over to the Bear Canyon Trail turnoff. At the turnoff we could see into upper Sycamore which is usually dry but today had plenty of water. If we had more time would have been fun to explore Sycamore and double back to Bear Canyon Trail. But we kept going and dropped into Bear Canyon.

Bear Canyon was another water paradise with heavy flow and large pools everywhere. We stopped at one of the larger pools upstream of 7 Falls and took a nice break. Continuing on to 7 Falls area and the usual crowd had gathered at the pools. With the heavier flow than normal there was plenty to see but that brought in more people. Moving on hiked down lower Bear Canyon and back over to Sabino connection to the parking area. Great loop and timing could not have been better for the water situation!

saw nobody on the entire bear canyon trail, except a rattler that buzzed me and scared the pumpkin out of me

just a couple of people the rest of the way. felt great on the whole ascent to bear saddle. the last 5 miles or so were more on the painful side. beat my last time by 15 minutes.

1st trip
I took advantage of the 3 day holiday weekend to do this hike since it's a long drive for me as well as a very long hike. The official mileage is 17.2 but it's closer to 17.8 or even 18. The water is still flowing throughout all the major canyons in this area. Every once in a while the trail would cut across a drainage running down the sides of the canyons and it seemed odd that they weren't even flowing with all the water below. Waves of light rain came in and out throughout the day, so water was abundant in all ways.

We did the loop counter clockwise and headed up Bear Canyon first. A little bit before 7 Falls we got off trail and had to bushwhack up the side of the hill to the trail. Looking back at the topo and other tracks, it looks like we may have shaved off 0.1 miles doing that, but it didn't make it any easier. We made it across all the stream crossings without incident. My feet did get wet, but that's because my boots are no longer waterproof.

7 Falls was running full force. We decided to forego hiking down to see the bottom pools up close. We had just gained a lot of elevation, and had quite a lot more ahead of us, so adding more was not of interest. the views from above were really nice, anyway. As we headed further up Bear Canyon Trail, we could see another trail that connected it to 7 Falls below. It's a little fainter, but it's still there and connects both trails. Along this area we first encountered quite a lot of higher grass along the trail, likely there due to the lesser use this section of the trail gets past 7 Falls. The grass was wet from the all the rain that day and before, so below my knees were soaked, all the way to my feet. After all the work we did to try to keep our feet dry, it was of absolutely no use once we got to this area.

As we neared the high point of the hike, I was looking forward to it so we could finally start hiking downhill and give my legs a break. I could feel myself getting sore during the ascent, which doesn't usually happen for me. I guess all the local hiking in the county and city parks without a lot of climbing has taken a bit of a toll in terms of conditioning. In addition, I forgot my hiking stick for this hike. Fortunately, not long after 7 Falls, I found a dead agave right next to the trail and used the saw on my handy dandy Swiss Army Knife to cut the ends and make a very stable hiking stick.

A little after passing the high point of the hike, we stopped and took lunch. Since we were still high up, the temperature was pretty cool. The cooler temps bothered Joe more than they bothered me, but that seems mainly due to the difference in body types. Just as we finished, a wave of rain came in that was the strongest one of the day. Fortunately it didn't last long and as we descended, the temps got warmer. The grasslands up in this area are nice. Looking higher on some of the surrounding mountains we could see snow, a lot more near the junction of Sabino Canyon and East Fork Trails. Clouds were covering the tops of almost all the mountains, so at times it was little hard to make out.

After we passed the junction for the trail to the tram in Sabino Canyon, more and more hikers were encountered. One even mentioned my hiking stick, asking if I bought it at the visitor center . Towards the end of the hike the sun came out more, making the temperatures even warmer, and better opportunity for pictures.

Finished in just under 9 hours, including the lunch break, which I had hoped for in terms of timing. My speed on this was a little better than usual for lesser used trails. The cooler weather definitely helped me for this. It seemed like less work doing a longer hike like this keeping cooler and not needing as much water.

Most of the hike was in light rain. Up Bear Canyon and down Sabino. My first time on #23, boy howdy does it sing! Steep and narrow up top. With the creek roaring below like a river reminded me of Vivian Creek Trail out of San Gorgonio California. I'm not sure if it was the sun making a bold appearance for the first time in days or the angels singing in the background but #27 seemed pretty cool to me. It rides high with commanding views out over Tucson and down to the bustling tram.

I have hiked a few times in the Catalinas but never any of these trails. JJ and I took off our shoes and waded across the creek that poured over the road as we approached the Bear Canyon trail from the parking lot. Quite a few creek crossings ensued but we kept our feet dry. Not an easy task. It looked like we were the only ones to do so. Nick called us pumpkins for not just wading across. :o

We heard running, rushing, and roaring water nearly the entire hike. Expansive views and sheer canyon walls dominated. Seven Falls is running at a good flow. Pretty cool!

All in all a very nice hike. JJ took us to BK's for a big lunch. Yum! Thanks for everything John. :)

I had suggested a couple hikes to JohnLP last night once I realized I was free for the better part of the day. He came back with this one and I am glad he did! It was freaking fantastic. Water was flowing everywhere and Seven Falls was spectacular.

The day got a tad warm for just a bit but overall nearly perfect. Afterwards we put the hurts on some Tacos and BKs! Great Day in my book!

I did the Seven Falls hike and Sabino Canyon tram ride quite a few times as a kid, but hadn't been back in forever. This looked like a good reintroduction to both. The original plan was Bear to Sabino, but that...um...didn't happen...

The Phoneline Trail was entirely shaded and a nice warm-up. We had lofty views all the way to the East Fork Trail, with pretty minimal effort compared to other canyons in the Catalinas. Surprisingly, the East Fork was where we did most of our gain for the day - this section must be amazing on the northbound Arizona Trail. Sycamore Reservoir was a nice little detour; I'm curious what it looks like during other seasons.

Thimble Peak, our second detour, was well worth the steep/scrubby little hike to get there. Getting introduced to class 4 climbing sounds fun, but I figured that with >14 miles in my feet, it would best be saved for another time. At the base, we still had views worthy of inclusion with Spud Rock, Kimball and Wrightson.

I was a zombie most of the way down Bear Canyon, but there was water everywhere, some deer, and of course, the falls. The sun in our eyes led to some embarrassing route-finding issues, but as the sun went down it was quite pleasant. I wasn't really in the mood for 1.5 more miles once we got back to the TH, but we survived and saw another deer on the way.

Note to self: bring a filter on future hikes of this size

PS- my first GPS route! Hopefully the triplog/route automatic link works ok. You still have to enter mileage/AEG/time manually, right?

Bear - Sabino - Phone Line loop, with side trips to Thimble Peak and Hutch's Pool. Lots of water in the main drainages, but able to keep the feet dry at all the crossings.
