Joined a few others to haul some roofing materials out to Toney Cabin. It sounded easy enough, and was at the start, but I think my arms stretched a bit by the time we reached the cabin.

Awesome day. Great company made it a memorable day. Burgers at Porters in Superior on the way back was the perfect way to wind things down.

Thanks for thinking of me Wally!

I was asked to round up a few volunteers to assist Jack Carlson and others haul some panels into Tony Ranch. Four HAZ hikers had the day open so HAZ was well represented on the trip. The load started out to be 80lbs then we heard 85lbs and I got an email today the said 90lbs+. Apparently it keeps growing. The hiking started out easy then we hiked uphill and then added switchbacks and then the trail narrowed and was choked by scrub oak and catclaw. When hiking side by side no one really hiked in the trail but more often on the sloping sides stepping on and over rocks and logs and through brush. Finally once we got to Bull Basin trail the conditions were better and we cruised on to Toney Ranch. Bruce and I stopped by the cave since we were in the area and headed back. Bruce almost lost his shirt but a catclaw bush held on to it for him so he picked it up on the way out. On the way home I talked the gang into stopping at Porter's in Superior for burgers. From the number of patrons, it seemed like the happening place in Superior. Thanks to Jack, Steve, Art, Steve, Andy, Bruce and Ray for getting this done.

I received an invitation from Walter Frack to assist him and other members of SALT (https://www.azsalt.org/tony--toney--ranch.html) in transporting 85 lbs of galvanized roof panels down to Toney Cabin, as part of their refurbishing efforts on the aging structure. They took the extra step of removing the galvanizing from one side, allowing the panels to age naturally and match the appearance of the existing panels.

Eight of us initially started the task, but only seven finished. Despite expectations that Wally might have sought younger participants, the diverse team comprised individuals in their late 50s, four in their 60s, two in their 70s, and one aged 81.

The roof panels were packed in a 9-foot-long container constructed by Art, equipped with four handles on each side to accommodate up to eight individuals. We navigated through a narrow, brushy trail and switchbacks.

The morning began with frost on the ground, but the weather warmed up as we ascended 1000 feet in 2 miles to reach the saddle. We rotated handlers to maintain some level of freshness. While descending, we anticipated a faster pace, but the switchbacks and steep sections slowed our progress.

Upon reaching the Bull Basin intersection, the terrain leveled out, providing smooth sailing to the cabin. After delivering the load, we enjoyed snacks and lunch before making the return trip. Wally and I decided to explore downstream and visit the cave. Despite not having been there for a while, it remained fascinating. The ladder leading to a different chamber at the end of the cave was no longer present, and we found a caver's registry. Attempting to sign in proved challenging as none of the pens worked. The last entry was by a JJ on 1/10/2024.

The climb back without the 85 lb package was more comfortable, but the sun made it a bit warm.

I thought it was sofa king hazy because of being so close to the Pinto Valley Mine, but afterwards, on the drive home, it was really dusty desert everywhere. Weavers Needle wasn't even visible from US60 and the Supes southwestern massif only came into murky view once within Gold Canyon. This June-like July weather has really just sucked. It didn't seem that windy and the early cloud cover was definitely helpful on this tougher than expected loop. A few more miles than I'd calculated, quite warm and the trails weren't as clear as I'd thought they'd be. Bear scat everywhere throughout the hike, but the only wildlife sightings were bats above the road at the beginning, a small skunk crossed the trail on the western section and a roadrunner darted in front of the truck on the drive out through the mine area. The Tony's Cabin side trip was worthwhile. I'd like to return there, but probably in the spring when the creek would likely be flowing better. Haunted Canyon isn't the best Supes hike, but it isn't the worst either. The overall canyon is very similar to Campaign Creek (sans the granitic rock). As we're leaving, two hotdogging fighter jets blasted by, going south. This is a common occurrence in the eastern Supes, but usually about noon on weekdays. They were early birds today.

Over three years since our last trip out to Haunted Canyon so this was way overdue.

Excellent road conditions through the mine to the TH. 287A up to the Upper Haunted Canyon TH was in nice shape as well.

Nice flow of water along the way, all the way to the Bull Basin Trail junction, but easy to stay dry at all the crossings. Trail conditions along the way were great, no overgrowth at all. Saw a pair of campers at the corral and another pair at the fork to Toney's Ranch/Cabin, otherwise we had the trail to ourselves. Saw two deer as we approached the cabin site.

Fueled up at the Bull Basin Trail junction then headed up to the Upper TH. Slight overgrowth along the way to the tank but not that bad. Could see signs of recent trail maintenance from the tank to the upper TH, smooth sailing. Hit the road, took a short break, then sailed down 287A to the lower TH, only seeing one vehicle the entire 4.2 miles.

Perfect day on the trails.

A trip to the wilderness with the Eagle. The morning started out cool and stayed that way almost to Toney's cabin. I did take a tumble along the way but the damage was cosmetic. :o Bull Basin trail is overgrown so plan for some route finding and scrapes if you decide to hike it. The climb up Haunted Canyon trail to the saddle on Paradise trail was toasty. The hike down Paradise trail was nice and shaded. Bruce did a slide on the way down but recovered well. There was tree fall/limbs in several areas and we removed some. The road hike from Paradise trailhead to the upper Haunted Canyon trailhead went by pretty quick. The road there was in good shape. The hike up Haunted Canyon trail was warm but once we started down the rest of the hike was mostly shaded and temps were dropping. Not sure I was in shape for a 20 miler but we made decent time and I can walk today. I could have used more water because of the warm climbs. A good hike with normal BS & banter. In the end we agreed that anything that went wrong was Denny's fault.

I can't believe it's been 6 years since I've been out this way.

Joe put together some options and Wally and I opted for the longer lasso loop. At the last minute, Joe had to back out , so Wally and I carried on.

Haunted Canyon #203
A chilly 41 degrees at the beginning. 1 truck at the TH. The road walk lasts for just under 2 miles. We checked out the Perez Cabin, before hitting the trail. The trail is generally in decent shape, but be forewarned that long pants are recommended because of the PI. It's easy to spot currently in it's beautiful fall red.

3.5 miles itn, Wally worked on his triplog, with his Autumn entry. He used his head and all was well. He was now in full Halloween form.

The Sycamores were in full fall color. The Tony Ranch springbox was full and due to get a workout after the afternoon campers would arrive.

After a stop at Tony Ranch, we headed for Bull Basin.

Bull Basin #270
We only made it .3 miles on the trail, before we bailed. We had some decent miles to cover and the trail was way overgrown. We retreated to the Paradise trail.

Paradise Trail #271
The climb to the saddle was warm in the sun. We both looked forward to the shade of the trees once we dropped down from the saddle. This section is special.

We needed to do a roadwalk to get to the Upper TH for Haunted Canyon #203. It went by quickly.

Haunted Canyon West
It's a bit more that a 1.6mile climb to get back to the Paradise intersection. Wally promised to show me the Grapevine spring box. We passed the location on the Topo map, nope. We passed the location on RS, nope. finally we ran across the actual location.

Back in the area close to Tony cabin, we started running into people coming in to camp for the Halloween weekend. We chatted with @laurabalaura for a while, before Wally ran into others he knew.

The colorful sycamores looked a bit erie in the afternoon light on the final push to the vehicle
5 vehicles at the Lower TH and 2 at the upper TH when we left.

The only wildlife seen all day were 2 javelina and a deer that were sleeping next to the road on the way in.

Good hiking with the Supesaholic again.

Hike w/ kids. Camped at Miles TH the night before, had a great time with brats and s'mores, cold sink got cold overnight. Left vehicle at camp and road-walked, then did the @ShatteredArm shortcut, which started easy and quickly devolved until it was easier to carry the kids, one at a time, over the catclaw and manzanita, instead of convincing them that cuts are temporary. We'll do the long switchback next time. Reached Haunted Canyon TH and we really enjoyed the well-maintained trail and ample shade, especially on the first mile. Dropping down to the Tank was easy and we had a long break here, huddled together under a small spot of shade, as it was getting pretty warm already. Paradise Trail was in worse shape, more overgrowth to push through and a generally steeper tread with a few washouts. Once we entered the shaded section we all had more fun. Returned to the Jeep later than expected, I overestimated the kids pace on these hot, rocky trails. Peaceful day out there, only one other group camping at Miles TH, no one on the trails.

Bear with me
Seven years ago I did a hike and started my triplog by saying:
"This hike is all Hansenaz’s fault. (I’ve never met the gentleman, but I still blame him)" :)

Then after a hike in Jan 2020:
"This hike is all Outdoor_Lover's fault. (I’ve never met the young lady, but I still blame her)" :)

Well, for this hike I say:
"This hike is all wallyfrack’s fault. (I’ve never met the gentleman, but I still blame him)" :)
============
In Jan 2017 I did a hike I named - Government Hill and "GOVT HILL” BM.
I hiked to Government Hill in the SE Superstitions and easily located a USGS "No-Name" benchmark. It's a nice little disk, but it has no name on it.
I know many HAZ members have been to Government Hill, and have viewed this no-name disk.
I emailed the USGS with the LAT/LONG of the no-name disk, and their answer, "We have no record of that disk". HMMM ….

On TOPO maps, about 1 mile west of Government Hill, there's a mountain named, Peak "5501 BM". It's basically a no-name mountain, and uses the BM's elevation for its designation.
Well, I have a datasheet for that "5501 BM" benchmark disk, and it's named ….
"Govt Hill". Another - HMMM .…

On that hike in 2017, I hiked west, off Government Hill to Bull Basin Tr, and attempted to climb up to Pk 5501. I failed.
I fought through about 100 feet of thick, intertwined vegetation and gave up. That stuff was like hiking through a chain link fence. Up to Pk 5501 was another 500 Ft up, but no way.

Fast forward to last year. Wallyfrack tried to get up to Pk 5501, using my 'track up', and also stopped, due to vegetation.
However, after his hike, he did some great research, and got up to Pk 5501.
He used a different, zig-zagging, and less dense vegetation track, and located the BM disk named "GOVT HILL" (1946).

After his successful hike, the "King of the Supes" graciously sent me a 'HAZ PM', and included his GPS track up to Pk 5501 from Bull Basin Tr.
Well, I made it up there on this hike, using his expert info.
Thank-you, wallyfrack.

Now, here is why I blame wallyfrack for this hike.
Yes, he confided in me his 'track up', and then he enticed me to get up there by offering me a money reward. (Photo from wallyfrack's successful hike photoset).
[ photo ]
Well, I couldn't pass up that reward. 😀

So, off I went to retrieve my reward. I located the GOVT HILL BM disk, and the summit log — With my reward inside. 😀

I also located 'where' Ref Mark #1 used to be located, and I did locate RM #2.
Note - The two RMs are not disks. They are etched crosses in boulders.
RM #1's etched cross has chipped away, and that 'chip-away' appears to be a natural occurrence. RM #2 was over 29 Ft away, but easily located, and in perfect shape.

One more point of interest.
I included Google Earth screenshots of my track. You'll notice it stops at Bull Basin Tr, and does not include wallyfrack's track-up portion. He did the work on that part, and it's his.

So, I'm glad I finally got atop Pk 5501, and I'm very thankful for the King of the Supes's assistance. My photoset will explain what I actually did with my reward. 😀

My original plan was to hike the decommissioned Pinto Peak Trail, however as I turned down 305 at Horrell Ranch Pinto Creek looked like the Mississippi River, apparently we've had a lot of rain lately. Since I did not feel like floating the truck down Pinto, I turned around and headed up 287a stopping at the Upper Haunted Canyon TH. I've hiked Haunted Canyon numerous times but have not done the upper portion. A balmy 27 degrees at the start with a light dusting of snow at the TH. At about a half mile in I came across some pretty fresh cat tracks in the snow and had the pleasure of following them up the trail for roughly a mile. Once I got to about 4,400 feet the snow started getting much deeper and pretty slick. I slowly made my way up to the saddle took a short break before heading back down to the TH. I'm not sure if their is water normally in the ravine but it was flowing pretty good the entire way and only likely to continue with the snow melting the next couple of days. I still need to get out to Horrell to hike Pinto Peak when the water goes down.

It is that time of year again to hike the Superstitions. I am looking at focusing on the Eastern side this year. Planned on a three day trip of single day hikes along Forest Service Road 287. My plan was to do the West Pinto Creek/Rock Canyon, Bull Basin/Paradise and the Haunted Canyon Trail. Due to Rain on Monday morning I got a late start and changed my plans. Only had time for a short hike the first day so I chose the Upper Haunted Canyon to just past the saddle down to Dirt tank at the junction with the Paradise Trail. Since I also had a little extra time I also drove up to the Miles Trail Head and checked it out.

The upper portion of the Haunted Canyon Trail was in good shape easy to follow. Steep toward the saddle but not a real challenge. Water was in every creek and even at the saddle water was seeping out of the ground. The water tank on the south side of the saddle was overflowing. I did not see the bear but I must of spooked one coming up the trail because it left some nice prints and you could see it was running (or what ever bears do). On the saddle I could see some really big thunderheads toward Phoenix. I am assuming this was the storm responsible for the hail storm in Phoenix Monday afternoon.

At the Miles Ranch Trail Head I checked out West Pinto Creek. It was running pretty good but you could see it was running quite a bit more a few days prior. probably from the storm the week before. It looked like it was running 50 to 100 yards across and probably over 5 feet deep in the center. On the drive up to Globe Monday morning I saw a little snow on the side of the road along Hwy 77 as I passed over the Pinal Mountains, that kind of surprised me. Tomorrow I will hike the Bull Basin and Paradise Trails. I heard they were a bit grown over so I will see.

This started as a trip in from the west trailhead for a change. I saw a coati getting drink by the old road. There was more water than I remember and I lost interest at on point because I didn't want to wade through or climb around. I was the first vehicle there but saw many hikers and backpackers on the hike out. I even heard "Hey Wally" and saw Chiu whose was backpacking with a group to spend the night. There were ten additional vehicles a the lot when I returned. On the drive out I had to wait for a gopher snake to cross the road. The dust suppression spraying is going on so be prepared to wash it off. ](*,)

About the triplog title.
Government Hill and "GOVT HILL” BM are not in the same place.

I first used the trail, ’Haunted Canyon W TH to Saddle.’
I then continued on with ‘Government Hill Trail’. From Government Hill, I descended the ‘hill’ to the west, down to Bull Basin Trail. There’s no trail down to Bull Basin, and the descent is steep, but very doable.

Bull Basin runs north-south here. I crossed Bull Basin going west, but not very far.
My plan was to continue west, off trail, and up another mountain peak. From that peak I was going to go two short peaks north, to a peak that has a benchmark symbol on TOPOs. From Bull Basin Tr, west to the BM, is only about 4 tenths of a mile in distance, and 500 Ft ‘up’.

As it turns out, I hiked only about 300 ft west of Bull Basin Tr and discontinued the pursuit. The vegetation was that very thick, 6 to 7 ft high, intertwined ‘stuff’, that I knew was going to exist for more than half the way up the mountain. (And more than half the way ‘down’ the mountain on the return).

Even in the planning stage of this hike, I was almost sure I wouldn’t do that last part of the planned adventure, as Google Earth gave very good (bad?) satellite views of that thick stuff.
(I experienced this same type vegetation last week, and was not pleased - It took forever and was exhausting).
Once the thick brush stopped me, I retraced my way back and made the hike an out-and-back.

As many know, ‘the hill’ named Government Hill has a benchmark. It’s benchmark has ‘No-Name’ on its disk.
The disk displays the elevation (5445) and that’s it. No other stamped info, other than the normal “USGS” and “$250 fine for disturbing” etc.

The BM I didn’t reach is on a No-Name peak - (TOPOs call it Pk 5501, just because of its BM elevation).
Here’s the fun part - The No-Name peak’s benchmark is named (and stamped), “GOVT HILL”.

So, …….. Here we have a mountain many hike to, called Government Hill, with a no-name disk, and we have a no-name mountain with a disk named “Govt Hill”. I’m sure there’s logic to all this - or maybe not.
I have a copy of the “Govt Hill” data sheet, with excellent info on how ‘To Reach’ the “Govt Hill” BM, on the No-Name peak. I have inquired, twice, to the USGS for info on the No-Name BM located on Government Hill, and they state “they don’t have a record of that No-Name disk”. Interesting.

For the most part, this hike was a good adventure. Alot of water is still running down Haunted Canyon Trail, and Paradise Tank is full. Government Hill Trail had alot of ice on the ‘smooth rock parts’, which was avoidable by hiking a bit off trail.
Sadly, the Government Hill’s summit log sheet (Blank side of some sheet music) was all wet and barely readable. I hung it out to dry while I was up there, and also added another dry sheet of paper.

One new experience for me, on this hike.
I talked with a hiker who was hiking with four dogs. Each dog had its own personal locator beacon around its neck, with a curved, wire antenna coming out of it. If they got out of sight, or lost, the hiker had a transmitter/receiver that would lead him to any of his lost canines. I thought that was really cool.
I’m sure HAZ hikers with dogs know all about ‘Canine PLBs”, but it was a first for me.

Peak 4804 is just south of Miles Ranch/TH. There’s a benchmark up there named Miles.
Peak 4804 was supposed to be only a small part of my planned hike. It turned out it was the only part.

I had time constraints today, as I had to shuttle someone to PHX Sky Harbor in the late afternoon, so the plan was to start this hike 1/2 hour before sunrise. That never happened.
I had too many surprise delays that made me cut the hike very short.

My first delay was getting there. Just prior to Superior, on Rt 60, all traffic came to a stop. All traffic was totally stopped for over 1/2 hour. This was at about 6:00 AM. I know there’s alot of road construction on Rt 60, but this ‘full stop’ was not anticipated. Cars finally started to move slowly, and slow it was, all the way to Pinto Mine Rd.
I actually started the hike an hour and 1/2 later than planned.

The second surprise was the slow progress moving up Pk 4804. This peak is little, not much more than an oversized ‘bump’.
Very tall, thick brush greeted me immediately during the climb, and stayed with me for 3/4s of the ‘up’, and all of the ‘down’. (I went down the other side to Haunted Cyn Tr). I should have brought a hedge trimmer.

It was sunny and 30 degrees when I started up through this thick stuff.
The brush I was plowing through was covered with thick, frost. HMMMM ….I wonder what happens when this ‘frost’ melts? I soon found out.
Once the temperature went above freezing, every time I pushed on the brush to clear my way, I was ‘rained on’ by the wet branches and leaves. By the time I got to the top, I was soaked from my hat to my boots. The bright sun must have been laughing at me.

To make things even more fun, amongst the healthy brush were charred remains of a long ago fire. I started to morph into a piece of wet, black charcoal.
Once done with Miles BM and its two RMs, getting down to Haunted Cyn Tr was even more brush, ‘rain’, and charcoal.

I was totally soaked again, so instead of going south on the trail, I went north to the TH & then ‘road hiked’ to the car. I then drove down the road a short distance, and quickly located Miles Azimuth Mark. That was the end of my hike.

Now here’s my recommendation about Pk 4804. Don’t go up there.
Even in dry conditions, don’t go. The thick brush and the charcoal bath will still hand out grief. Plus, there’s nothing to see up there, except those 3 little disks, plus some wood, wires and random nails. Heck, no one in their right mind should go up there just for ‘disks’…….

During the drive home, I was anticipating Rt 60 delays again, but there were none. Good for me.
My shuttle job to PHX Sky Harbor worked as scheduled. Good for my passenger.

As soon as it dries out in the Miles area, I’ll finish the hike down Haunted Cyn Trail, etc, and make sure I have no, end-of-hike, time issues.

Did some exploring in and around Tony's Backyard. Went up a couple of drainage's off the main trail until things choked up then reverted back. Tony's Backyard Trail was easy enough to follow but did choke up in places where the best mode of travel was in the creek bed. Main goal of the trip was to get a feel for the area in preparation for a possible loop hike next fall. Weather was perfect, and saw nobody the entire time we were out. Saw 5 white-tail deer near the cabin.

Our 17th annual spring break trip for the 2-3 of us (Max and I haven’t done all 17 but Jim has). Good times.
This year we chose Miles Ranch and must give some HAZ appreciation to Lee for sure on this one: thanks for all the suggestions and useful info.

After 30 years of AZ hiking I finally make it to one of FOTG’s favorites  I’m not sure why I hadn’t been here but I think perhaps the massive open pit mines had something to do with it.

Day 1
West Pinto out to Spencer and up to Cement Spring. On the way back we took Cuff Button up to a bit beyond Jerky Spring which was down the side slope.
We got about 3 hours rain in late afternoon but it eased up by 6pm.

Day 2
Paradise to Government Hill ridge and over to Bull Basin. We saw a total of 8 deer (one large buck) on the ridge part of this trip. The descent to Bull Basin we got in some heavy brush that was gnarly  On our return to Miles we saw 2 Toyotas with HAZ decals :)

Day 3
Out and back from Haunted Canyon upper TH. Saw one hiker, the only person we saw all weekend.

Stopped at AZW on the way back :)

The original plan was to backpack Haunted Canyon on Halloween. I even signed up for a meetup that was going to do just that. Unfortunately they weren't going to be back until late Saturday and that wouldn't mesh with my schedule. So I gathered up some friends and we did this as a day hike. We chose the west trailhead because one of the crew had to be somewhere by five o'clock and this was the shorter option. Up to the saddle we went, then down into the canyon. We checked out the spring and the area around the cabin. I wish we had more time to spend, but that just means we'll have to come back and do it again...possibly from the east trailhead.

I couldn't make up my mind on doing this backpack. I tried to get a few people to come with me as I knew I would be hiking it by myself. I'm not fond of doing that when I'm in brand new territory. After much trepidation, since this hike was on my wish list and I like camping with this group I finally bot the HAZoween stuff and committed on Friday nite.

Now to figure out the 3 sets of driving directions :-k and yep, as much as I hate using a GPS to get me to and from some of these unknown THs, I will now have to download the driving directions... okay Bruce :) . This time I drove to the west and past the marked #203 TH to what I thot was the lower TH. That didn't feel right so I went back to the marked western 203 TH. I figured someone should be here by now and decided since there wasn't signs of anyone or of Larry's cool jeep; this had to be wrong. So I headed back on 287A to not far from the intersection that goes to the Miles TH when I looked down a side road to see a sign that said Haunted Canyon. Sheesh, this wasn't going well already.

There at the lot was DBmooner and skillpore. So I pulled in. None of JJ's group was in sight. Devon decided he would go to the upper TH I just left and hike in that way while we waited a bit for the others to arrive which they did. I geared up and headed out to get a jump start... ya, like that would last long ;) as the others caught up to me in no time and soon whooshed past. I hiked with Larry until the road ends where the rest were waiting for us.

Now I was on my own or so I thought. Well the good witches of Halloween won out and Stephen ended up hanging back with me  . Whew! cuz that was not the easiest route to hike with all the creek crossings and such not to mention the POISON IVY. But first we had to climb above the creek and thru some pretty yellow flowered areas that even had some saguaros up higher. The views were pretty cool in this area as you could look up the canyon and at the rock formations. We stopped one time in this area; mostly so I could adjust my pack.

A little past the 2.75 mark we drop back into the creek and hang a right. I felt like we missed a cairn or something because generally you don't hike down the middle of a creek considering it might be running; there is usually a side trail. Shortly we got back up on that. Soon we got into the area of some heavy poison ivy. Stephen told me about his difficulties :yuck: with poison ivy so he was particularly careful through most of this. I, on the other hand, have had very limited experience with poison ivy but I had my long pants and socks on so I just tried to be somewhat careful hiking here.

After several times of crossing back and forth which can zap your energy, Stephen would just stay in creek bed. He pointed out some Virginia Creeper that was turning red; it has five leaves. We would have to get around dead fall from time to time. I actually would have to get on the ground to get under one tree. Finally I decide enough of this creek bed crossing so I decided to boulder hop as well. But of course, this is the time the trail more or less doesn't cross the creek bed for awhile :oplz: .

We did take another break. I enjoyed the breaks in the creek bed because it gave us a moment to look around and enjoy the area, poison ivy and all. Like most folks it was great fun hiking up that bedrock section which is not too far from where we would be camping. From time to time we checked the GPS to see how far we were. We finally arrived at our destination to greet all the other HAZers. It was nice to meet Fan and Lucy as I have followed them on HAZ for awhile. Larry "Oregon Hiker" was there too.

They gave me a moment to scarf down 1/2 of my sandwich and part of my beer. We did a group shot and then it was time to be going again. So with my beer and camera in tow it was off to Tony's Cabin. This grassy section was really pretty :D to and around the cabin area. Reminded me a bit of Reavis. The cabin was built at the same time my grandparents homesteaded to the middle of nowhere in N Central Montana. Their home and surroundings were not nearly as big or nice at this.

There was HAZantics in and around the cabin for a bit :sl: and then it was time to go in search of something Bruce had his eye on. I followed in tow having no idea where we were going. At an intersection in the creek, many of us turned around and started to head back. The others would come back soon and catch up with us at the spring where that Halloween guy was drinking from the spring trough. That Halloween guy was at the cabin too and had chased me around a tall tree stump with an axe; wished I had been a cat.

We got back to camp and bid adieus to the day hikers. I put up my tent, had another beer and ate the other 1/2 of my sandwich as the sun fell and the fire, loaded with natural rock shrapnel began. I am not sure how the conversation once again got around to my favorite topic "poo"; gosh not again ;) . Not sure if it's me or if that's a normal topic.

Slept pretty well with the usual human rotissire movements. Got up at 6:30 and prepared immediately for the hike out. Lee was concerned we would miss the turn out of the creek bed so he asked DBmooner if Stephen and I could hike out with him. So that's what we did which was great because we got to do the whole trail that way; Even though we had to climb a heck of a hill we hadn't anticipated for the weekend. Devon started out pretty fast so I'm thinkin' we're in trouble if we want to even try to keep sight of him. However, he would stop and wait for us to make sure we were coming before continuing on.

And then it was time for the hill to start : rambo : . Those switchbacks are a bit steep and slippery when you're towing a big pack. However, you did get those level-out points to catch your breath so thankfully, it wasn't that bad or as bad as we feared. It seemed humid though and there wasn't a breeze. We did get occasional spots of shade so that was nice. Devon tried to keep us informed of our progress both mileage and steepness-wise. We were jumping for joy when he said the lower switchback section was the steepest.

You get to somewhat of a level area where you can look back down on Haunted Canyon and toward Government Hill. It was a great view. We may have even spotted another trail over on the mountain across the creek. Now back to one foot in front of the other as we got to the tank we had heard them mention at camp. It's really quite the tank and I have no idea how they got the equipment there to build it as Devon said there used to be an old tractor there. Anyway, very close to here is DBmooner tree. We rested and chatted for about 15 minutes before finishing the climb to the saddle.

Of course once you're at the top saddle, the views to the NE are pretty impressive so had to take a few pictures as we made our way down to the creek. It's always interesting when you go through topical changes in a short amount of time like you do on this part of the trail. Even though Devon told me it was all downhill from the saddle, I was skeptical. It seems there's usually a little hill involved in these but by gosh if it wasn't completely downhill the entire rest of the way.

We arrived at DBmooner's jeep and squeezed ourselves in for the ride back to the east TH. :thanx: Devon for taking care of us on the trail and off. Sharing your knowledge of the area is much appreciated as well. I took Stephen back to his place and met his mom who I suspect thot I was pretty scary looking :A1: . Well it is the season. I noticed when I got back in Tonto Jr that I had dirt marks and such on my face as I didn't clean up before getting on the road.

A group of five us made the journey out to Haunted Canyon. We shuttled a vehicle to the upper lot and then started from the lower trailhead. This is a nice hike and fantastic area. We claimed the main camping area and only saw two day hiker groups. After setting up camp we walked over to the cabin area and explored the area. From there we returned to camp and set in for the night. The temps got very chilly overnight. We woke on Sunday and took our time. We eventually packed up and hiked out to the upper trailhead. Afterwards we stopped by Los Hermanos in Superior. I had low expectations on the food but was pleasantly surprised.
