I got behind on uploading and am just getting around to this trip. First time in Florida Canyon and second time in the Santa Rita Mountains. The first mile or so of this trail was full of wildflowers of all colors.

The trail is in decent shape until you reach the sign that says .7 miles to Armour Spring. It isn't bad but the whole area around Armour Spring and the push up to McCleary Peak is less obvious and the closer to the peak you get the more overgrown it gets. The Armour Spring area had water running and a bit of snow still. The snow melt seems to get the best of the mountain side and the whole trail kind of slides or droops down.

McCleary Peak is interesting. To the South you can see Wrightson poking out behind Crest Trail and the rest of the Range lays itself out to the Southwest. The top of the peak reminded me a bit of Mazatzal Peak. I was solo on this one and took my time. Only saw one other hiker out of Florida Canyon.

Decided to go down and join the Tucson folks for some camping/running in the Santa Ritas. Explored some mines, etc. on Saturday afternoon before an evening of beer and campfire...

Hiked up Cave Creek in a group of 3-4 to Florida Saddle, then a couple of us peeled off and picked up another for a side trip to McCleary Peak, which I had never been up before. Water coming down the drainage east of Armour Spring, but none at the spring, as usual. The traverse over to the peak was fun, but it was cold and windy, so we didn't spend much time there.

Took Four Springs to the ridge, and followed the ridiculously steep connector trail (another new one for me) back up to Crest trail. Once back on Crest, we encountered a nice stretch of snow. Short break at Baldy Saddle before heading down.

Nice cruising down Gardner Canyon trail, the lower stretch (below Walker Basin junction) was new to me, and unexpectedly nice until the road. Pretty enjoyable loop, lots of water in the lower drainages, and nice to check off some of the last stretches of trail I hadn't yet seen in the Santa Ritas.

I had wanted to do the entire Santa Rita crest. I've done all the peaks individually, but never together. Started on the Super Trail to Pipeline to Roger's Rock to Four Springs. Took Four Springs around to the saddle below McCleary. Hiked up McCleary - on the way down was checking out the direct rt to 88mac. Decided it looked doable and hiked straight to 88mac instead of getting on the crest trail. The route was actually really good - not much brush. Very steep, but not bad. Descended to Pine saddle and then hiked the steep slope back up to the crest again. Stayed on the actual crest following the ups and downs to Rice peak and then to Ian. After Ian made a beeline to the crest trail and down to Baldy Saddle. I had planned on Wrightson but was gassed. My partner did it while I napped. Got some energy back on the trail down to Josephine saddle so I suggested we hike out Carrie Nation instead of Old Baldy. Found the steep route off Agua Caliente that takes you to the Carrie Nation mine and then the Carrie nation trail out. Great day and felt harder than the stats - probably because of the off trail portion between McCleary and Ian.

Great time trying out a set of trails that are totally new to me on a day with perfect weather.

I did not know where I was going once the Pipeline trail hit Kent Springs - luckily someone who knew the area helped direct me to Roger's Rock, and then onto the shortcut up to Four Springs. I don't think I could've found either without wasting a lot of time. Too many new trails is a nice problem to have.

Roger's Rock was great. When I was almost done with the shortcut up to Four Springs I saw a HUGE bear walking below the trail. I think there was even a second bear with it but it was too far away and it was hard to tell through the trees. Had I seen this guy on the trail or at a campsite I would've **** my pants - be careful with your food folks.

The rest of the way was straightforward. Beautiful trail up to Shovel Saddle, a little scrappy but clear over to Armour Spring and the Crest Trail. McCleary is really fun, but a total mess if you aren't on the trail, so having a route helped. 88Mac is an easy bushwhack with one little scramble the way I went. Very steep climb down from Pine Saddle to Shovel.

I took a slightly different way back and missed the Pipeline trail - luckily there was a second trail leading back over the ridge to the Pipeline/Super trails not long after that.

This is a great but strenuous hike. The sign at the trail head says 4.7 miles to Florida Saddle, which seems about right - many of these very decorative metal signs are incorrect! We're having a very warm and dry winter this year; this hike's day was cool with thin clouds and hazy sunshine. The route overall was the driest I've ever seen with no overgrowth (unusual for this time of year) so the path was easy to follow. The trail up Florida canyon is nicely varied with steep rocky sections interspersed with flatter and smoother parts. The last mile or so before the saddle switchbacks up a steep slope, and the saddle itself is usually pretty overgrown - but not this time! I'd forgotten (or not realised) that there are two major junctions at the top. The first is Florida Saddle itself, where Florida Canyon, Sawmill and Cave Creek trails meet - there are a couple of obvious signs. About 0.3 miles further up a few switchbacks you get to the junction of Crest and Four Springs trails, which has just one small sign for Armour Spring. We went this way. This part of Four Springs trail is little used and not maintained, so be careful! It's on a steep slope with loose footing. If there's any undergrowth (there often is), the trail can be hard to follow. From Florida Saddle over to the unnamed saddle is about 1 fairly slow mile, due to the poor footing, undergrowth and many deadfalls. This section broadly follows the contour line, with a few switchbacks at the end up to the saddle. From this saddle you can keep going on Four Springs over to Shovel Saddle and down into Madera Canyon (highly recommended!). But this time we hiked over to McCleary Peak. The official gps trace here is good, and the "trail" has had some work done since the last triplog. From the large and obvious cairn on the log at the saddle, the trail starts out pretty clearly, heading over toward the peak. There are occasional cairns, but the trail was fairly obvious from the pruned bushes. The main thing is to stay high on the ridge as much as possible, ignore the opportunities to head off to the side and scramble up the rocks instead. It's a very slow 0.3 miles from the saddle to McCleary peak due to the scrambling and heavy growth. You'll be rewarded with stunning views in all directions at various points, and the peak itself is open and flat. Look for the registry there to leave your mark. We took 8hrs 45min total, slowed somewhat by one hiker with a bad knee and a few leisurely breaks. Total distance was about 12 miles, elevation gain about 4000'.

Good day, even if my buddy and I failed to make it to the summit ](*,) . Things were straightforward up until the last saddle where we missed the cairn which marks the normal route to the peak. Instead we went over to the left where it looked less brushy and more rocky. This was rough, particularly without long pants. After about 120 yards and in quite a carved-up condition we came to a rocky outcrop. There for the first time we spotted cairns leading forward, but the route didn't appear to ease up, and we decided we couldn't reasonably press on. No great disappointment cause the views of Madera Canyon, Wrightson, and Elephant Head were already great. There was another cairn leading back, and the route it marked was an absolute walk in the park compared to the way we'd come up. Back at the saddle we took a few minutes to build up the cairn we'd originally missed. Gotta try again soon with proper attire and a better idea of the way.

Love the wide open forest down in Florida Canyon!

What a day. Fantastic hike and destination. Matt (Mountain Rat) and I got the bug to do this hike from viewing some recent posts for McCleary by JJ and Friendofthundergod. We saw these names on the signin sheet (along with an earlier entry by the Norbys). Unfortunately, we nearly drowned and froze with the moderate rain for the entire time we were on the ridge. JJ's track helped a lot. It was an hour back down the trail before the numbness left my hands. Next time, warmer clothers and waterproof gloves, and maybe rain pants. Matt's throwaway rain pancho was in tatters by the time we got back to the Florida Saddle.

This is a unique hike, which affords unique views of Wrightson, Hopkins, and Elephant Head, although we could barely see them through the rain and fog. Incredible scrambling on beautiful but difficult (but slick when wet) rock along the last 1/4 mile of ridge. Be ready to fight though some stubborn bushes from the time you leave the Four Springs Trail, at a point just past Armour Spring. Highly recommend long pants and long sleeve shirt.

Yesterday, I suffered a very mild heat stress, so today I would take no chances and would re-gear for the heat; big ol' hat, 3 liter Camel, spare 3 liter Camel, 1+ liters in bottles, tossed the survival kit out of my pack and was ready to rip.

I met up with Roy at 7:45 and we departed. We hit the trail at around 9:00 as I recall and began our upward march. Only a short way in, a mist began to fall, then subside, then repeat... The atmosphere was extremely pleasant and the lighting was perfect for enjoying the views. And what views they are. We had the perfect conditions all the way to the top, or I should say almost to the top :/ Just after Armour Spring, we were so focused on the ground and finding the trail, that we failed to notice the squall that had developed over head. Then with only a few seconds notice, it hit! We quickly dropped pack and geared up for rain, and with the peak only a few hundred yards ahead of us, we stupidly trudged on :? At the peak, it was more wind than rain, so we took a quick photo-op and signed the register before making a hasty retreat. Upon our departure, the rain:wind ratio inverted, then the whole thing just went ^2. I can't speak for Roy, but as for my self, fear was keeping me warm and vertical(or seemingly so). It wasn't until Armour Spring, that the weather gave in and we could assess our situation and it was far less than we had hoped or planned for. ...But aside from that; soaked, cold, numb, hungry, tired and giggling like a couple of drunk teenagers, we made our way back to the TH.

That was one wild ride!!!

Thanks Roy for the adventure and for driving down. I'll see you on Friday...

Lee and I had this one in the works since our last trip up to Mt. Wrightson earlier this month. He threw in a curve ball and wanted to add McCleary. Fine by me so early this morning Boy with Dog (only Blanco today) and I headed down south.

Florida Canyon was flowing heavily with water from the recent rains. The entire hike was a treat from start to finish. Given the nice weather we saw several others out enjoying themselves also. Great hike!

I headed back to Wrightson with JJ for the second time this month. We decided on another approach this time. I was not as spry as usual today and was beat several times by the climb.

McCleary was fun. I got a little off-trail on the way back and regretted it a bit, but the route is generally easy to follow with careful attention. There was water everywhere and nearly perfect temps. Blanco tore it up as usual and we got tacos on the way home.

I like that Wrightson area. I already have a few more hikes on the mind for that area.

Dang, I had forgotten how much fun it is to bushwhack up to this peak! I hadn't been on the Florida Canyon Trail since before the fire of 2005, so it was finally time to check it out. It used to be so cool and shady up there, but the fire changed that big time. However, I was surprised to see that much of the way up to the saddle was out of the burn area and there was still plenty of shade, just not at Florida Saddle. :( From Florida Saddle it was up along the Crest Trail for about 0.3 mile to the junction with the Armour Spring Trail. Followed this over to Armour Spring, where the unmarked Four Springs Trail starts. From here it is a short ways to McCleary Saddle, where the cairned hikers route to the peak takes off up the ridge. Didn't spend much time on top because it was pretty warm, plus there was a nice big cloud developing nearby which let me know I should get off the peak. Sure enough, when I stopped at Armour Spring on my way down, it started raining lightly. But NO THUNDER, so it was pleasant. Continued raining lightly as I headed back down the switchbacks, but stopped before I got out of the pines. The wildflowers were fantastic during the entire hike. I had kind of forgotten what a great hike this is. Nice to see it again. :)

Had the intention of getting to the top of Mt. Wrightson, but a wrong turn led me to the top of McCleary. Didn't do the turnoff at the Spring and then continued heading north on the eastern face bushwhacking my way along until I spotted a cairn and got on the ridge and ended up at the summit. Just bad judgement on my part for ending up here, but the view was great. Seeing Wrightson and the other peak here was nice and then the view of the Catalina's was one of the better views you can get if you ask me. I guess this peak isn't much visited as the log in sheets had a lot of older dates on them. Glad to have been up there, finding the path back to the saddle was nice, and just minor bushwhacking required for that. Nice mountain to be on, the Florida Canyon trail is a long trip up, a lot of down trees along the trail and many shrubs to get your legs, wear pants! Don't be like me wearing shorts or else your legs will look like Freddy got you.
