Met John at Telegraph at 0630 and got started. Up Telegraph, then west on National. Went out to the old lookout off the east end of Goat Hill. It’s been a couple of years since I was out there, but the abandoned trail is still pretty clear. From there, we headed up to Goat Hill, then looked at the old mines near the top. Headed back east, then down Ranger. The occasional morning shade was nice. Then east on the gem of South Mountain, which left John speechless, most likely with awe. Headed over to Piedras Grandes, which is supposedly closed for “construction” so we didn’t stick around too long. From there, it was a warm hike up Kiwanis, then all downhill on Telegraph. Good workout. Didn’t see many hikers other than on Telegraph. Some new trails for John.

Linda and I met at 6:30AM and headed up to Telegraph Pass, then turned left on National as I continue to expand my SoMo horizons west beyond the Pima Canyon area. We left the trail to check out a nice overlook, then went up Goat Hill and dropped down the east side to look at a few mine shafts. Unfortunately, no chupacabras home today.

Back down to National, then down Ranger to Las Lomiatas, where the crown jewel of SoMo took my breath away, with visions of imaginary poppies dancing in my head. We did a quick pass of Piedras Grandes, where the ramadas are allegedly closed for construction, though there was no sign of construction beyond some dirt piles. We hiked back up Kiwanis and then down Telegraph Pass to finish it off as it started to warm up. Fun way to start the day, and nice to see a few new areas and hike a couple new SoMo trails.

Chumley and I decided to check out the poofy clouds from the vantage point of Goat Hill. Got started up Telegraph around 1730 and we were pleasantly surprised by actual precipitation. Waves of rain showers passed over us as we made our way along National to Goat Hill. Less colorful sunset than we were hoping for, but complaints were minimal. Saw a few flashes of lightning, but nothing of concern. Quick hike back downhill. Nice evening for a drizzly hike.

The forecast looked like it might be a nice evening to spend some time outside. It's not always the case that a chance for rain actually turns out happening here. A few waves justified the umbrella, but it never rained hard enough for Linda to get to see me model my rain skirt. A couple of lightning flashes and some rumbles of thunder were an unexpected bonus.

I was jealous Kelly & John hiked Las Lomitas over the weekend, so I had to find a way to include it in today’s hike. Started on Telegraph around 0745. For February, it was already as hot as the devil’s pumpkin crack. Passed plenty of the Tukee crowd on the way uphill.

Continued west on National over to Goat Hill. Very breezy along National, which kept me alive. Very clear air made for some nice views.

After Goat Hill, I headed down Ranger, which had a few moments of shade. East on on Las Lomitas. It’s a real gem. Lots of dead saguaros.

Up Kiwanis, which looks to have received some recent maintenance. Finished up on Telegraph again. Good workout, but ridiculously warm.

The smoke from the Flying Bucket fire was obvious from the National Trail near Goat Hill this afternoon. Maricopa looked hazier than usual because of the prevailing wind. It seems the plume was mainly near the Sevenmile Mountains, so perhaps the the Whole Enchilada has been over cooked a bit.

It was my 3rd day of hiking and I had plenty of time to hike Goat Hill. I drove to this trailhead around late morning and started on the Telegraph pass trail. The trail was in good shape and it led up a to a pass where there was also a road. Near the upper part of the trail it became rocky and it was necessary to weave a bit to get around the rocks. At the road, the trail followed along the East side of the road and within a few hundred feet I saw the National trail. I followed the National trail for less than 1/2 mile to the lookout. This was a stone structure much like what I saw over at San Juan lookout the previous day. Inside this structure was a seating area made of rock, a rock table and a grill area. It looked like a good area to have a picnic but you can't drive to this location.

I continued up the National trail toward goat hill. From the lower part of the trail you can't see Goat Hill, but after getting up on top of the ridgeline it was possible to see a high point. The peak was actually behind the highest point you could see. I took the well maintained National trail along the ridgeline past the high point and then found a short spur trail heading up. At the top, I didn't see a registry but I happened to have a jar with me so I started a new registry there, signing my name.

I had a late lunch up there and was able to see Maricopa peak from a distance. Then, I headed down and stopped at the stone structure. I found a chipmonk hanging out there so I got a few photos and a video.

Stats:

Total distance = 7.34 mi RT
AEG = 1,382 feet
Strava moving time = 3 hrs 3 mins
Strava elapsed time = 4 hrs 48 mins

Denny finally ran out of excuses to avoid hiking with me. We met at 0800 and got started up Telegraph. Cool to start, and cloudier than expected. Headed west on National at the pass, then opted to continue to Goat Hill.

Down Ranger, then east on Las Lomitas. Stopped at the ramadas on the closed road, where the parking area was filled with vehicles. From a distance, I decided they were all firefighters and made a beeline for the parking area. Confirmed the vehicles were indeed all belonging to firefighters, but they were nowhere in sight.

As we approached Kiwanis, we could finally see where they were training, up on the ridge and lookout on the east side of Kiwanis, which had also been an option for today’s hike if we had decided to skip Ranger/Goat Hill. I was slightly saddened at the missed opportunity, but we enjoyed watching them training on the rocks above us.

The sun made a brief appearance as we ascended Kiwanis. Telegraph was quite busy as we finished. Good hike, good workout, and fun to hike and chat with Denny again!

I met Linda at Telegraph trailhead for an 8am start. That worked out pretty good as the morning rain was done by then. Not to crowded on the way up. We got to the road and headed up to the rock house on National for a quick break. The guard rail had a couple broken posts and yellow tape. possible from yesterday's tragedy. :( We had clouds most of the morning which was great for the shade and views! A few flowers here and there with Lupine being the top producer. The Burseras looked good and the mountain sides were a nice green. Over to Goat hill then down Ranger and across Las Lomitas. As we approached Kiwanis for our last climb Linda hit the ground. I rushed over to help and she screamed get away I need a professional! :o :scared:. Turns out she had spotted the firefighters up on the hill above Kiwanis and wanted them to use their expertise to help her!! :D :y: Ok, I may have made that last part up. :D . The sun came out as we went up Kiwanis then hid again as we went down Telegraph. A very nice outing with great weather, trail, views, and company! Thanks Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!!

Workout hike with Daniela. Didn’t want to do Corona Loop today, but wanted similar stats. Pretty close. Felt kind of warm. Lots of people on the trails, as expected.

Started from the Telegraph Pass TH and then just made it up as I went along. Hit up some tread I hadn’t hiked before on the Ma Ha Tuak range. Where the Alta trail reaches the ridge line, a trail heads off along the ridge to the east (while Alta continues to the west). It is not listed on the maps, but is signed on the trail itself and eventually joins into the Crosscut trail. I didn’t take a photo of the signage, but it was Hai … something.

Started at the pass. Hardly any cars on the road around 5:30pm - had to make sure it was actually Friday.

I almost stepped on a speckled rattlesnake sunbathing in the middle of the trail. It happened right at the beginning of the trail, too. Pretty uneventful after that. Glad to be outside on what is perhaps the last “cool” day of the season.

We explored three of legendary Mike's main routes to his airy mountaintop, but the hunt was futile. Either he's hanging out with Billy the Kid, perhaps taking a nap in the soft, abundant grass or has been kidnapped by desperados. Maybe next time...

Another afternoon/evening hike with my son. Headed up Telegraph Pass, then west on National to Goat Hill. Ate a snack of freshly homemade pretzels at the top, then retraced our steps back down. Again, no lamps needed thanks to the nearly full moon. Heard several coyotes and a few owls.

Some new trail markers on Telegraph & National, and some fresh trail work on National. Plus the bench at the top of Telegraph Pass is under construction.

After coming up Pyramid last week decided to try another way. Temps were reasonable and again a nice breeze but not strong enough to create too much haze.Outbound only a few hikers met on Telegraph Pass that were coming down , no one on National on the way to Goat Hill. Took a break below the summit there to avoid the breeze at the top. Enjoyed the city views along National on the way back. Considerably more hikers from the lookout on down Telegraph Pass trail to the trailhead.

Met up with Daniela at 0745 and headed up Telegraph. There’s been some recent maintenance in some of the more eroded areas and the trail has been shifted a few feet to the right (while going uphill) in some spots.

At the pass, headed west on National over to Goat Hill. The only breeze of the day was up at the top of Goat Hill. Retraced our steps back down. Good workout hike, not of ton of other people.

The only bad part was I had a blister from wearing some dress shoes the other day; I had taped it to hike, but when I peeled the tape off after the hike, I wasn’t very careful and ripped off a deep chunk of skin. Looks…not great, and hurts like hell. May have to take a few days off hiking and treadmill for that to heal.

Up to Goat Hill from Telegraph and back. Not many people out, the few I saw were all on Telegraph except for some horseback riders up along National. Chatted with them for a few minutes. They said a woman told them that she was yelled at by a ranger recently for going to the top of Goat Hill. Hot, no breeze.

Started up Telegraph at 0800. Very few people out, maybe because it was super windy. Continued west on National to Goat Hill, which was mostly shielded from the wind. Took a snack break there, then headed back over to Ranger and down that. Headed east on the crown jewel of the park, which was putting on a show with one, just one, poppy along the trail. Once we got to the parking lot for Kiwanis, we headed northeast over to Piedras Grandes, and looked around there for a while before heading back over to Kiwanis. It was getting warm on the way up Kiwanis, but the breeze being funneled up the canyon helped. Back down Telegraph to finish out the hike. Saw several squirrels and one chuckwalla. Good day for this hike!
