Early morning hike in the Phoenix Preserve. Started from the 32nd St. TH just after 5am. Dark out, but city lights were enough to navigate the trail. Took the Quartz over to the Yates and then took the Yates south to where it connects to the Nature Preserve Trail. I noted on my last visit that they had done some trail maintenance on the Yates, as I took the Nature Trail down to the parking lot I noticed they had done some major reworking of this trail as well. I briefly hopped onto the Freedom Trail as I made my way toward the Mojave. I was surprised to see the Native American(?) drummer who usually welcomes the sunrise from the top of Piestewa Peak had “set up camp” at the back ramada. I could hear him drumming and chanting as I hiked up the Mojave. When I reached the Mojave Connector I decided to the unnamed, mountainous route that switchbacks up just to the east of the Connector. I had hoped to get to the top before sunrise, but missed out by a few minutes. From the few clouds that I could see it looked like it might have been a nice sunrise. There is an option to hit two peaks along the way, but I only did the first. Reconnected back to the Quartz and took that back to the TH. Nice loop. Enjoyed all the trails. No wildlife. Encountered 11 hikers.

crazy eights workout hike
doesn't seem like over a year since i've done this combo
mostly overcast, cool temps
quite a few people out hiking
felt slow, but time was about the same as my last few
these trails are rocky enough that there was very little mud after last night's rain

Agreed to an easier outing with a couple I hadn't hiked outside of meetup with previously. Dreamy Draw Park had been closed for a very long time. Easy drive for me. Lot full so parked on side of rd.

Did some loop they found on AT. We did add a trip up the saddle to give the AEG a bit of a boost. Great weather and not an abundance of trekkers along this route.

Pain in ball of foot the last several hikes. However after the last 2 it has turned into sharp, searing nerve pain shooting through. MUST get this under wraps.

We were lucky to find a parking spot available at noon at the trailhead at 32nd Street and Lincoln. We headed up the Quartz Ridge Trail, and made a nice loop around several of the peaks, including Piestewa Peak. All the trails were well-defined, although there were a lot of loose rocks, which caused some slippery descents.

There were some nice views on the backside of the peaks, with few people, so at times it was hard to believe that we were in the middle of a major city. There are so many trails back there, so there are multiple ways to make a loop hike. We ended up on the Piestewa Summit trail for a short distance, and the trail that we were on turned into a paved trail, which entered the Biltmore Hillside Villas gated neighborhood, which we meandered through to return to our car. The sun got pretty warm and it was a beautiful day. Overall, a nice relaxing hike with some nice views in the middle of the city.

Went to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve with the intent of doing a loop off the Quartz Ridge Trail and starting from the 32nd Street TH. The TH has about 25 parking spots and I arrived early enough (before 7 am) to get a spot with several still left.

It was still pre-sunrise and I could see the flicker of headlamps on the ridgeline as I headed out. I didn't use my own headlamp, as the dawn light was quickly coming and sufficient for my purposes.

Once around the loop connecting to LV Yates, I decided to hit up the Piestewa Summit while on that side of the ridgeline. It was busy, as per typical, on a Saturday in December, but not jam packed. The summit was a bit breezy. I hadn't been up there since they put in "steps" up what used to be a final scramble to the summit.

After descending, I crossed back over the easterly ridgeline on the Ruth Hamilton trail and then circled around and up RJ Peak and then down to the end point overlook on the Mohave Trail, returning on the Mohave Connector to the parking lot.

The PMP is not my favorite, but these were mostly new trails for me, and outside of the summit trail, the hiking traffic was pretty light, providing a nice workout along with the city views.

A friend recommended this, I hike in this area a lot but never from this trailhead or on this specific trail. I enjoyed it. I get why they call it Quartz Ridge, lots of white rocks along the way. Parking lot is a bit small, luckily I'm an early bird. Seems most people go up to the peak and head back from there.

TL;DR Like North Mountain, but on dirt instead of pavement. Great views.

I discovered this hike totally by accident: I usually drive Shea to my Dad’s place, stopping for a hike at the tiny 6-space lot off Tatum. For some reason I was driving down Lincoln instead. Realizing my mistake, I made a quick turn here, deciding to make it up as I went along. Hard to get lost. (No idea how some people end up in the gated community.)

There’s three short sections to this hike:

1) QuartzRidge Trail #8A from the parking lot: .23 mi, 41 AEG. Wide, smooth, oldster friendly.

2) Mohave Connector Trail #202 to saddle: .18 mi, 164 AEG. Steep, slightly broken, some step ups, but not bad. I chug right up this.

3) Saddle to summit: .28 mi, 304 AEG. Steeper, more broken, more step ups. Doing the math, it’s not that much steeper, but I had to take it slow. I make the summit in about 20 minutes.

There is no gain on the return. Doing the little lasso off the summit only adds .10 miles to your hike. Other than taking care in the corners, you can trot back to the trailhead.

Summary: Good ROI for a quick lunch hike.

I started from the 40th street TH on a CCW loop I drew up and made my way over to the Circumference Trail. A MTB'er said to me, good to see you again. I said huh? He said I saw you here yesterday. I said, not me. He said, then you have a doppelganger. Look out world, there are two of us.

The climb on the Circumference Trail is in much better shape, than when I last did it 8 years ago. They've even put in numerous steps to keep the washouts to a minimum.

On the climb to the peak, you pass the normal mish-mosh of first-timers, snowbirds, speedsters, boom-boxers, yoga pants in check, yoga pants stuffed to the max, etc. etc. On the way down, the Route Scout birds went off announcing the mileage. A mother and 10ish YO daughter were on their way up. The mother remarked to her struggling daughter, "See the birds are singing to you". "I don't care about the stupid birds". No Teva Joe's were spotted.

I continued across on the Mohave and Mohave Connector Trail, with views into the small cookie cutter homes. Now on the home stretch I headed back to the lot on the Quartz Ridge Trail and YV Yates

Not as high of concentration as other places in the area, but plenty of Scorpionweed, poppies, Dichelostemma capitatum, fiddleneck, Lupine, brittle bush, Rock Daisy, Creosote.

Feb 25th, Saturday: Yates, Ruth, VOAZ, Happy Hour Ridgeline Loop. Wanted to get in a nice hike after lollygagging picture-taking part of my hike yesterday.  Little did I know, it was going to happen again.  I hadn't been here since December so I was also curious to see how green it was and it was. I parked at 38th St.  I thot I would see more cars on Saturday afternoon but I didn't.

As I made my way zig zagging over to LV Yates Trail, I took several pictures of this lower area, mostly to document the greenness as we don't know when it will quite be like this again.  I made the junction off of the 100 and headed south on 8.  It was very green and lush of course but then.... yes, poppies.  They started just as the ascent to the saddle began.  AND, on both sides of the trail.  So, somewhat reluctantly, I threw in the towel and decided to take movies :stop: .  There were several hikers coming and going and their doggies so I worked around them.  The poppies were interspersed so no big groupings, yet.  Stay tuned.

I reached the saddle after taking a picture of that huge quartz rock.  I started down the other side and noticed Lupine and Scorpionweed.  The bright sunlight made it difficult to photograph the low lying flora even though to my eye, it was a pretty scene.  I fiddled with my brightness bar to see how that would work but wouldn't really know until I got home.  The 8 goes right (west) but I headed up the 136th Street hill toward the new house they are building.  And yep, there it was, masses of poppies on both sides of the trail :) .  There were other little flowers but your eyes are immediately drawn to all that yellow.  I liked the poppies on the upside hill as they were easier to photograph.  There were the other co-stars too and purple and yellow go so nicely together.

The poppies finally gave way as I headed up the hill. I noticed a gentleman with a McDowell Preserve blue shirt on and I jokingly asked if he was lost.  He is a steward over at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.  We talked about the wildflowers including the stunted growth and he suggested maybe the freeze was a reason.  I discussed coming over for some interpretive hikes but that I like to get in a good hike if I'm going over there. His companion suggested I do the hike I want to do before the event and then attend the hike so you don't have to worry about the time.  I continued my hike and as I headed down the pavement to Ruth Hamilton I noticed that they had removed the people size guard rails.  I took pictures of some of the progress on whatever it is they are building; still wish they would have put in a Bar.

I turned onto Ruth Hamilton.  Here you have a good view into downtown but it wasn't super clear today.  As I got up the hill I got some more pictures of the structures going in.  I took 8A Quartz Ridge Trail northbound.  It is very scenic with all the cactus and such.  There were a few hikers on this trail too and the desert floor was pretty green but light on wildflowers.  I went through the wash a couple times and intersected back on 8 and headed west.  Once again you get to see the wide expanse of the green desert floor and hillsides.  I always like the cactus in this area as well.  I headed up the hill to where the trail starts getting rocky and crossed to the 304 and then a use-trail over to the 302.  I did notice that there are two ways to get on this connector trail off of the 304.

I took the 302/304 north to the main junction that includes 1A/304.  They have six stickers on this post indicating directions of each.  I was heading upward on the 1A/302 to catch the VOAZ.  I always like the boulders at the junction with the VOAZ which I would be taking.  I encountered a few hikers as I made my way to the saddle and then into the shade of the north side of the mountains.  There were some wildflowers as I made my way down, especially poppies in the center section.  Instead of taking the 1A (that's where the sticker comes in),  I took the hill off of the VOAZ as it was in the sun.  I had planned a little different route back to the TH but I was running late so opted to circle around Happy Hour Ridgeline.

There were some little wildflowers on the hillside.  I crossed over 100 and continued around the hill. The wildflowers had pretty much disappeared in this area and the northside of Happy Hour Ridgeline.  I noticed a helicopter and it circled an area around 40th St several times.  I would later see flashing lights at the 40th St parking lot when I turned on to 40th St.  There is a hill to the northwest side of 36th St that has a trail on it.  One of these times I should take the time to check that out.  I did spot an Anna's Hummingbird on a tree branch just like I had at Lookout earlier in the week and both times toward the end of my hike.  What was really funny though is HAZel was announcing my mileage beginning with the sound of Anna's Hummingbird!  I laughed so hard  .

Once again, I took lots of pictures and movies.

From 38th St counterclockwise. I thot I started slow but HAZel said 18:30 so I felt better about my hike. There were quite a few hikers out and their dogs. Also some wildlife including small butterflies.

Coming off of Per Charles #1A I hoped to crossover to #8 LV Yates but I ended up on #304 for a bit and then was able to head east. The crossover trail is pretty rutted out. I gave thot to not doing Quartz Ridge and just keep going on #8 but I kept to my original route. I thot Quartz Ridge #8A was more of a hill but it's actually an in and out of two deep washes and the hill is at the end. I do like this hike between the hills. I wanted to get a picture of the cholla patch but the sun was just in the wrong place.

I spotted the new construction up at 36th St. Looks like it's way too big for a Starbucks, darn! How cool would that be. The west side of Ruth Hamilton #8B has been beat up quite a bit. Once over near the junction between 8 and 8B, I decided to go down the parallel trail to 8A as I really don't like going north down the LV Yates Trail. I hadn't been down this trail, which is like scree, for a very long time.

I rounded the corner between the wash and the mountain and I continued going round that mountain rather than straight toward 38th St; I didn't realize the trail did that for so long. No big deal, I know I'll eventually get to go north again. The clouds in the sky were getting my attention so I had to take a few photos. It was starting to get chilly, especially when I hit the shade.

No beer today as I needed to go to Trader Joe's. If you haven't been there this holiday season and if you like sweets (chocolate/peppermint), OMG! there is some great stuff there. I really just went for milk and eggs and some fruit for my Cranberry Conserve and walked out with a lot more than that

PS The Gingerbread coffee is delish!

The BLOB! Super fun hike. Get the busy social trail and a lot of quiet solitude trail and everything between. Great loop to get miles in while staying in town.

I'm continuing to re-visit my city hikes plus I needed to return my shoes to REI and this was the closest hike. I was the only car at the 38th St Trailhead. It was a tad warmer than I thot but with the breeze it was just fine. I hiked clockwise. My toes were still a little sore from the short shoes I hiked in a couple days ago but they didn't start to bother me until coming down Quartz Ridge.

I did fall :( on my way up LV Yates but I didn't fall hard so I just inspected my leg, picked up my phone and continued on my way. There were a couple people at the saddle and I wouldn't see any hikers again until coming down Quartz Ridge. They are busy working on the new structures at the top of Ruth Hamilton hill. I took several pictures so that we can track the progress. I think it's a great place for a residence if that's what is going in there. They have created a hiking lane on the pavement down to the junction with Ruth Hamilton.

I always enjoy this part of the Ruth Hamilton Trail as it heads west. There does appear to be some trail damage here and on the way down Quartz. Quartz was the busiest of the trails as there were a few bike riders and a half-dozen hikers. I do enjoy this part of the loop as it seems rather scenic. You traverse twice through the wash before coming out on the other side and joining back up with LV Yates.

For some reason the hike to get to the 302 seemed longer. They definitely did a little trail work as you come through the wash up to the 302. The sun was providing for some backlit plants but it was hard to photograph because of the location of the sun. I took the VOAZ as the sun went behind the clouds and stayed there until I was done with this trail. I saw about 5 hikers and a biker on this trail.

I headed across the way to make my way back to the Trailhead while stopping to photograph some more of those lush green-leaved ocotillos. I'm still amazed at how hardy the ocotillos still look well into the Fall. Of course, as I got closer to the trailhead I ran into more people. I was just thinking I hadn't seen anyone with a dog and then what do I see within the minute, a couple people and their dog.

I had my usual huckleberry beer watching the activity around the area including a park ranger, a fellow on a real pretty horse, hikers, bikers and dogs.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
