After recovering from a heel spur, and then getting sick for a few weeks, it was time to get my behind outside. This was a perfect trail and day to get out!!!

My friend and I wanted to do a training hike for the Canyon trip coming up. We headed for Military Sinkhole in Payson. We decided to start at the top and work our way down. The trail had a variety of flowers, and a lot of baby Horne Toads. It starts out a gradual slope down, then you pass through a green gate, and the trail is straight down and rocky. This lasts about 1 miles or so, forgot to bring Dic% Tracey (my garmin). The trail then levels out and is more like a mild roller coaster. Once you get to the bottom, there is parking and a bathroom. Then the fun begins, we took a break, turned around and went back up. It was a tough climb at the end, but a good trail for training and the views at the top are awesome.

I met a group of about 15 hikers at Dead Horse Ranch Park in Cottonwood. We parked near the horse riding arena area, near the bathrooms, which were nice! We started the hike on Lime Kiln. The hike reminded me of Sedona, the rocks were a red hue color. We went on a gradual uphill, then the trail flattened out. After about 1.87 miles, you turn right, onto Thumper Trail. This trail was a gradual uphill, with about 3 tougher hills to climb. It wasn't that hard, just the fact that it was hot. You are very exposed on the trail, no shade. After the 3rd hill climb, with switchbacks, you come across Raptor Trail, turn left. This trail is 2.9 miles, all downhill. When you get towards the end, make sure to take a sharp left, up a little hill, instead of going right. You will see an old cabin. The views are amazing of Jerome and Cottonwood were both in sight! At the end, you will have to take the road through the campground back to the parking lot. This was a nice short getaway, but it would be best to do the hike in the cooler months.

Day Two: We packed up and got moving, as it was a cold morning. The wind continued, but not as bad as yesterday. The Trail continues through the burn area, a gradual descent, going up and down through the area. Not bad of a hike actually. Then you have a steep, but short descent into a wash (?) I would say, it was very pretty and green. Then you go back up, steep but short ascent. The trail continues to roll through the burn area. Since the trail was like this, my feet decided to develop blisters! We stopped to fix the problem, only it got worse. The trail finally reaches the forest again, and then a final push to the end, following an old jeep trail, nice long descent, about 6 miles. It felt like forever, only because my feet were hurting from the blisters. We ran into another hiker, and more deer. The scenery was also very pleasant and beautiful. We found our next stash, across the street from 89A, where my vehicle is. My friend and I decided to not continue from here, since we were wounded by blisters, ugh! It was very frustrating. I felt really good, except the blisters. But, another Passage on the AZT done!! My two other friends continued their trek, all the way to the Utah border, yay!! By the way, if you do this trek, we left plenty of water across 89A!! ;) Miles were 17 miles for today!

Round Two of The AZT in the North Rim Country: Last year we stopped our backpacking trip, due to pure exhaustion, so this year we decided to start our trek from the East Rim ViewPoint and try and continue to Utah. My friends put a stash of our food and water at Telephone Hill. My drive up to the North Rim was quite windy, 45-55 mph. As I met my friends at East Rim View, we camped nearby and the wind did not die down at all! Woke up the next morning, and the sky was black. As we were packing up, snow flurries began to fall! Yay! Not only was it cold, but windy with snow flurries, this should be interesting. The snow didn't stick, but the wind continued throughout our hike, 45-55 mph. At times, we were pushed off the trail. The trail starts out on a downhill. The trail goes in and out of meadows. Then you pass by different water tanks, I couldn't really look at the scenery, as I was afraid my glasses would fly off my face! :o But what I could see, the scenery is beautiful, and green. We saw lots of deer, and one bike rider, riding into the wind. We finally made it to Telephone Hill, that was a tough climb, with altitude and the wind blowing, made me a little cranky. Once on the top, you enter the burn area. We continued on the trail for about another 3 miles to our stash, set up camp, ate dinner and I was in bed by 7pm. Slept the whole night, until I had to pee, of course! When we woke up the next morning, it was 13*. I was nice and warm in my tent. We traveled about 14 miles on the first day! Another passage done!

We continued from the East Rim View down to the meadows, through Tater Canyon and after 10 miles, we decided to quite. We were all tired and feeling sick. We took Forest Road 213 down to AZ 67. The guys hitchhiked back to the cars and came and picked up us girls. We were pleased we were able to do what we did. The trail along this passage was beautiful. We decided to go back and start at passage 41, since the last 8 miles on passage 40 is along the AZ 67.

We started the hike at 7:45 a.m. We headed off from the North Rim parking lot. The trail starts out on a downhill through the forest. Then you come to a dirt road, take a left to find the next carsonite sign. We then crossed AZ 67 and followed the Utility Corridor path. You can tell you were on the right path because the phone utility was along the trail. The butterflies were everywhere and so were the mosquitoes. We continued on the trail, going up and down, constantly, and hit the highest part of the trail, '9120. Took our breathes' away, literally. The views were spectacular. We then ended up at the North Rim entrance, and ate lunch, rested and used the facilities. Started the climb up a forest road, but were confused from the directions, which said we would only hike .2 of a mile and turn left. We did not see the carsonite, and we already hiked 1 mile uphill and did not see the sign. We went back down the trail and I asked the BLM worker and he said it was about 1.25 up the hill on the right. He was so nice, he gave us a ride up the hill and we were able to check out the cabin and tower. We then continued on the trail, headed back down and ended at the next passage, #40. We continued on #40 for another 7 miles up to the East Rim View, where our water and food would be. We finished at 8 p.m., and did about 20 miles or more that day!

What a great trip down South Kaibab trail. We started around 7:30, took photos on the top and headed down. The weather was perfect. I forgot about all the logs in the trail, and the last few miles took a toll on my knees. We made it to Bright Angel Campground by lunch time. The next day, headed over to Ribbon Falls. Again, perfect weather. That was a treat to see. On Sunday, we hiked half way up to Indian Gardens. Not very many people around, but that was fine with me. The winds picked up that evening. The final day, we hiked out the rest of the way. It was great to break up the hike out, made it a little easier!

Over Columbus Day weekend, I decided to head over to my favorite place, Aravaipa. I went with two other teacher friends. We arrived on Sunday morning and my friends proceeded to say that they do not like to hike in water. I said, "Get over it, you will be walking in water 99% of the time." So off we went. I ran right through that water like a happy doggie. My friends enjoyed the cool water too. The trees were starting to change color, but not by much. I did forget my camera in my car, dang it. The water is not at all deep, to my shins, and the weather was perfect, 80's during the day and 55 at night.
We arrived at Vergis (?) Campground area, the nice spots were, of course, taken. So we settled for a smaller site, there was only 3 of us. We put our packs down, headed to the edge of the water, had a glass of wine, and hung out by the "pool". That evening we decided to cowboy camp, slept outside under the stars. It was awesome, until I smelled that foul smell of a skunk! He did not stick around for long, the smell went away, and I fell back asleep. Headed out on Monday. The weather was perfect, and my friends enjoyed the scenery, even the water! I will be back again for my birthday!

It is always a treat to go back to the future, such as the Anasazi Ruins. This was a treat to be able to walk around the ruins and every corner I turned, there was something new to look at. Hiking with Rob, our master tour guide, Randy, Mike, Wendy, Megan, and Angela made the trip even better!

What a beautiful place! No words can describe this gem. I think this has been one of my favorite backpacking trips. I enjoyed walking in the water, excellent surroundings, and great people to hike with.

I hiked this on Father's Day with Take a Hike group. I only did about 6 miles, maybe 5 miles. The trail mostly goes up and down. It started to take a toll on my knees. I only hiked about half way in and turned around. The scenery is beautiful and the weather was perfect.

My frinds and I started at Cabin Springs. The trail is easy to find, since the AZTrail logo is basically behind the Cabin, where the Fred Haught Trail is also. We hiked along the trail, water in the creek. The weather was perfect. We hiked up and out of the canyon, to the top. It was a huffer, but nothing compared to hiking out of East Clear Creek. That was a challenge, but we did it. The trial was well marked, and the aqueduct was still leaking. I had to laugh after seeing other photos on here. I will add mine later. We headed up to Rock Crossing Campground, stayed the night there. That was a very nice campground. The next day we headed out to the Blue Ridge, beautiful views, and again, the trail was well maintained, and easy to follow. We hiked down the Blue Ridge, right into the Blue Ridge Campground, where our car was parked, changed clothes and headed back to Cabin Springs to pick up the other car. It was a great hike, and very scenice. We only saw horny toads, and 5 deer along the trail. Oh and the couple on their mules. Great trip!

triplog from a girl's point of view:
I also feel Rob did a very nice job on reporting the trip. I was a little skeptical about wondering into a Canyon with 5 gentlemen, but that is what they all were, gentlemen. I was also afraid I would slow them down, maybe at times, such as the chutes! When we headed down those chutes, I think my "F" bombs went off, "how do we get down that!" But I made it. It was cold, and windy, but the views were worth the trip. The Perfect Kiva took my breath away, literally! I was so pleased to see how the Native Americans lived. And thanks Rob for being such a great actor in my film of the "Perfect Kiva." I unfortunately was not able to get up to Jailhouse. The hike that day sucked up most of my energy. The first campsite was at a beautiful location, even though I tried to burn my self from my boiling water! I think that is why I kept warm that night. The next day hiking tested my hiking ability even more, I was scared of some of the heights we encountered, more "F" bombs. The winds picked up, and that night, my sleeping bag was going to be tested below it's degree level. I kept warm, even though it snowed. I have never camped in snow before, sure is beautiful to look at. The next morning we all "huddled" together to keep warm, packed up and headed to the Government Trail. Randal made me hike up to the top of some Petrographs? I forgot what they were called. I figured if "Hannah Montana" could do it, from the boy scout troop, so can I! I am glad I made it up to the top to see the pictures and got a group shot! When we hiked out of the canyon and I saw that red truck, I was delighted. Snacked on Doritos, if I was able to get it away from Chris, and had some Gatorade.
All in all, it was a great trip, with awesome views, and with a wonderful bunch of guys! Thanks guys!!!!
