From our camp at Big Lake, we headed out between rain storms. We took the trail from Rainbow campground down and across 249e and then up to the lookout tower and back. Some very pretty areas but a lot of burned areas from the Wallow fire. It had just stopped raining and the smell of wet, burnt wood was very strong. I was glad to get back to the healthy forrest of our campground!

My newest newbie hiking friend had never been to Canyon Lake or Tortilla Flats so I decided to hike out that direction and show her around! My not so newbie hiking friend came along too! Ha ha! I really assumed that we wouldn't hike all the way to Peter's Cave. That it would get too hot and we would turn around and head out. Wrong! Well it got hot, but we kept on going!Going in wasn't bad. We had the shade of the canyon walls off and on. Going out was a booger! Well the last mile or mile and a half out we were really hot, really tired and had run out of water. No bueno.

We did make it to the cave, but didn't climb up to it. At that point I didn't feel like climbing anything! We sat in the shade and picked stickers and foxtails out of our socks and boots and headed out!

We had a good time....but I think my new to hiking friends will think twice before canyoneering with me again! They both commented on being "trail girls"! Trails, who needs stinking trails!

On an odd side note, we kept smelling cheeseburgers all the way up the canyons! At first they thought I was hallucinating until they caught a whiff too! I guess the smells from Tortilla Flats really travel!

Out for a quick hike close to town before it got too hot! Took my newbie hiking friend and my old/new to hiking friend! My new, new hiking friend and I went above the basin to the ridge but left my old, new hiking friend at the basin as she had given blood the day before and was feeling pretty weak :(

I wanted to get one more hike in for the weekend since it will be getting hot before long.

Parked at Mining Camp Restaurant and headed up. I was actually wanting to do a little exploring since my husband was with me this time so if I fall and break my neck he could rescue me! Ha ha!

I had seen what I thought was a natural arch on a previous hike off to the left of the trail and wanted to check it out. FYI- it is not an arch, I repeat NOT an arch. Darn. It was a bit of a scramble up the hill but we explored a bit more then made our way back to the trail.

Made it to the basin and called it good for the day! My husband really loved it up there and wants to go back and do Flatiron....we shall see!

Glad to have a cool morning so I took a new hiking partner out for a secluded, easy hike. She has hiked Peralta to Fremont Saddle but thats about it. I have so much to show her! Ha ha! Not that I am a seasoned hiker or anything!

We went to Parker Pass then decided to go a little further as we were enjoying the views and the solitude!

Hope to be out showing her around more next Friday.....I love Fridays off :)

My friend and I had hiked Praying Hands from Treasure Loop (out and back) but decided to check out the whole Praying Hands loop! I was a little leary of losing the trail so I downloaded the GPS route. Found out that I didn't need it but it was there in case I did!

Loved the hike! It's always fun to explore a trail I haven't been on and this was no exception!I would like to go back and explore more some other time!Lots of interesting rock formations!

We were very cautious as it is snake season but we never saw a one. Phew! Lots of bunnies and lizards but that was about it!

Praying Hands Loop....I will be back!

Got out early to beat the heat! Well it is just warming up too fast for me this year darn it!

One vehicle in the parking lot at 6:55 when I signed the log, parking lot full when we left! We didn't see any other hikers until we were within half a mile of the parking lot! I like getting out early :)

Hiked through Garden Valley, back by Hackberry Spring and the corral and headed home for the day!

I hadn't taken my friend on this loop yet and she really liked it!It's so diverse! I didn't spot the arches that others have spoken of so would someone please get coords next time? I'm sure I will be back!

Out for an early couple of miles. Started at the Broadway trailhead and went up to the old homestead. Started up to the cave but the sun was blinding me at that point so we turned around. Didn't take even one picture. No wildlife this time and I have photographed every cactus and rock in the area before anyway. Good to get out even for a short hike :)

Out for a quick, easy walk in the desert. Haven't been out in a while because of being out of state and also having problems with my hip. I'm not old enough for this crap!

Started at the Broadway trailhead and headed East for a little over a mile and a half. At just under a mile we came to a low spot. I had just said to my friend, "This is a perfect place to spot deer!" and we realized there were 5 right on the trail looking at us! I raised my camera, removed the lense cap, hit the power button and nothing happened :( I pulled the battery out and put it back in and still nothing. I guess it's time to get a new battery. It just doesn't hold a charge like it used to. I was so aggravated. I reached back and fumbled for my phone that I had put in who knows which pocket of my back pack and snapped a few pics while walking towards the deer. They took off before I could get too close of course.

I'll post a picture for proof but with only phone pics I won't disgrace myself with more than that! I am still kicking myself for not have a fully charged camera battery!!

This is one of those trails that can take you just about anywhere, Robber's Roost, Peralta, the ridgeline, etc! I have avoided all hikes coming up this direction after reading the elevation gain associated with the mileage! I would just look at the various hike descriptions and shake my head and think, oh heck no! I can't do that! After getting some exercise going up Siphon Draw a few times I figured what the heck! I needed a change of scenery and I knew this trail wouldn't be as busy!

The early morning stroll through the desert was nice, the trail heading up the canyon wasn't bad...unless you accidently take a spur trail and end up where you aren't supposed to be! Oops! We were almost to the "false saddle" everyone talks about when my friend took a righty and said, "oh this way doesn't look bad!" I shouldn't have paused long enough for her to make that turn. I was leading the hike....oh well. We ended up under the group of hoodoos on the right before that saddle and took a seat to take a break. The footing was pretty loose there. We hadn't seen anyone yet, but a couple of men were coming up the trail by then. We waited for them to get up to us and of course they went a different direction. One of them said, "Ladies, the trail is over here!" We chatted briefly and decided to head down.

I really enjoyed the hike and intend on going back soon to at least top out! I will no longer fear the dreaded Carney Springs/West Boulder Canyon hike descriptions! Ha ha!

Headed up before sunrise. Didn't have a lot of time so more of an exercise jaunt with great views than anything but we'll take it!

Not many people on the trail that early so thats the time to go! Went a little beyond the basin to the ridge, right before you drop into the canyon and head up to Flatiron. Will have to do that another day.

Saw this hike and thought there were some pretty cool pictures and no one had logged it in over a year so....what the heck! It's just up the road from where we live and my husband wanted to scope it out for hunting too!

We were out before sun up as usual. I had downloaded the GPS route (sventre's) so onward we went. When we dropped down into the second wash and starting following it (as the hike description says to), my husband didn't like being down where he couldn't watch for deer so we climbed up the East side and got up high on the hill. We scrambled North following the GPS route roughly, just not on the trail.

Once we got to FR 10 we crossed and dropped into the wash. No more going the high ground route! Lol! Thank goodness! We found a few pools of water and lots of deer tracks but no deer. Oh well, my goal was The Mask anyway :)

The climb up to the mask wasn't bad at all. Took us just a few minutes to climb from the wash up but boy was I glad we had the GPS route to show us where it was or I would have never spotted it! Thank you sventre whomever you are :)

On the way back out we stuck to the trail and made it back to the car in 50 minutes! Phew, I was ready for the easy way!

What an adventure! I had done this same trek a few years ago but didn't make it all the way to the impact site...this time we did! Last time I was alone, this time I took my two youngest. Don't worry, they are 20 and 22 so they handled it just fine! Ha ha!

Headed up the the old homestead. Took a few pictures then the real adventure began! Made our way to the mine and checked that out! Then the serious boulder hopping, bushwhacking, cats claw scratching began!

I pointed off in the distance about where we needed to head and they were game so on we went! When we found the first piece of the WW ll wreckage we were all excited! Then a second and third piece! Woohoo!

Either I don't know how to use my new GPS quite yet or the downloaded route wasn't quite right. I was just saying that we were finding quite a bit of wreckage for the impact site to be much further but the downloaded route said it was a ways up. Probably user error...me being the user! Anyway, I looked up to the right and there it be! We were really excited now! Got the binoculars out and took some pics, had a snack and headed back out!

Found a young couple by the homestead on our way out that was looking for the Broadway Cave so we took them up there (my son hadn't been so what the heck). Isn't that what everyone wants to do after a brutal bushwhack is climb up a steep, loose rocky hill? Ha ha!

Back home and apparently brought a little of the adventure home with me....found two ticks on me! Geez! I have heard that deer carry ticks but have never picked any up here in Arizona! Lesson learned, while crawling through a canyon, who knows what you might pick up!

Was out to do the Praying Hands Loop but settled for an out and back as my hiking buddy had to be back home by 10! Ugh! I assumed that going back the way we went in was the safe bet since time was an issue. The loop will have to wait for another day.

Loved the hike, the views and the weather! We were out early and had the trail to ourselves for the most part! As usual it was busy as we were leaving :)

Great quick, close to home hike! Lots of bang for the effort!

Great way to start 2012! It is opening season for archery so my husband wanted to hike/hunt. Basically hike with his bow in tow :) Didn't want to go far so opted for First Water Trailhead.

Did the loop in reverse. Headed up Second Water and hooked it left towards the old horse corral to follow the creek while the sun was still not up. Found some deer tracks here and there. Nothing to get excited about though. Beyond the horse corral we hopped back and forth along the creek as it actually has water in it! My husband was a few steps in front of me when I heard him say, "Holy crap!" He had pushed through some reeds following a faint trail at the bottom of the slick hill North of the corral and almost stepped on a dead deer! She was stiff as a board! There was clumps of hair on the ground and we looked up the hill and could see clumps stuck to the rock above us! Guess she fell from the top! Maybe something chased her? Who knows. It was just really weird. Onward we went shaking our heads...

The rest of the hike was uneventful but beautiful! Got back to the trailhead and saw a Forest Service guy by the restrooms so I told him that we found a dead deer on the trail. That there was clumps of fur on the rock above, etc... he walked behind my car and wrote down my license plate number! I guess if Game and Fish contact me I will know why! Geez! I was just hoping that he would drag if off of the trail a ways! Moral of the story...if something smells in a few days in that vacinity you know what it is!

Did an out and back into the canyon with my friend. Would have done the 6 mile loop but someone kept mentioning that we had to make our way back out of the canyon and that she is older than me...out of shape...blah blah blah...not mentioning any names though! :)

Just in over a mile and a half and enjoyed it thoroughly! It is such a beautiful canyon! Used one of the GPS route downloads but don't know if it was really necessary. If you don't pass the spur trail that leads down into the canyon, then you have it made! Okay, I admit..I passed it and had to go back down to it! But I found it! I thought it was further up by where you hook it left on the main trail. My bad!

Not a soul in site....until we were about out of the canyon. Just the way I like it :)

Out to see if there is a followable trail from the Crosscut Trailhead to the old Massacre Falls trail. I thought we were on a good trail but I lost it! Ha ha! I could see the needle that we needed to head for so we just crossed the desert willy nilly! Found the original trail easy enough and headed up!

No water as expected nor found. Out more for the trail finding adventure anyway!

Explored a bit and headed back by way of the old road in to the trailhead. Boring, should have crossed the desert again! Oh well! Had a good time and got in some miles!

Oh, I forgot my camera at home. Took a few pics with my phone but those are only worthy of Facebook! Lol!

Out for a short hike with two of my sons and one of my daughters, daughter and son in law and five of my grandchildren. Apparently my oldest granddaughter (6 years old) told her teacher that grandma promised to take her hiking last time they were out from Oklahoma and that we never did so I lied! Couldn't have that happening again! Ha ha!

We didn't make it far, but I didn't think we would with five kids ages 1-6. It was more of an adventure than a hike! They all did real well and had a lot of fun and that is all that matters!

We started at First Water Trailhead and went up Dutchman Trail a bit, had a snack and headed back!

Did an out and back this morning. In at 7:00 with only one other car in the parking lot but it was full when we came back out! Didn't go down into Boulder Canyon just enjoyed the views from above!

Almost stepped on a rattle snake showing my friend the grinding hole things on the hill at Garden Valley! It was cold and not moving but it startled me just the same! Don't assume they are all underground folks!
