A nice, easy run through the lower section of Usery with lots of wildlife activity. I saw a desert tortoise on Blevins, a diamondback on Spillway and two javelinas just outside the park along Crimson Road.

Afternoon trail run from the Pyramid trailhead. I ran a clockwise loop of Bursera and Gila with a small segment on National.

I saw two snakes today, a dark reddish colored coachwhip in a ravine behind Bursera Peak and a speckled rattlesnake near the trailhead.

Got in some more training for this summer's Teton trip.

Started the hike at 8:15am, began climbing around 9:00am - made the summit at 4:30pm, rappelled down and hiked out around 8:15pm.

I took Denny and Joe's recommendation and explored Skyline this morning. What an amazing little park with a big mountain feel. I really enjoyed these trails, especially Skyline Crest!

I woke up early on my last vacation day in Costa Rica for a run/hike around Manuel Antonio. So before the crowds unleashed on this incredible little park, I was able to see much of it undisturbed. Nice trails, ocean views and loads of wildlife...what's not to love?

I think I covered every trail in the park looking for sloths, toucans, caiman, iguanas, monkeys and snakes.

I arranged a two-tank boat dive (with Mad About Diving out of Uvita, CR) to visit Cano Island. I wanted to see for myself what this biological preserve had in store for us under water. The dive sites did not disappoint! Water temperature was about perfect, which was surprising being on the Pacific side. You could probably go without a wetsuit if you wanted. Clarity was even better, maybe 75 feet at times. No shortage of things to see either. Sharks patrolled the bottom while huge schools of grunts and snapper hovered around the rock pinnacles. The reef also had many surprises between the rock crevices.

Mad About Diving is a very professional operation, with a more family feel than some other shops I've been diving with in the past.

Pictures to be added soon.

Based on the permits allotted by the national park, you have two options:

Option 1 - Reserve an overnight at the basecamp located at the nine mile mark at 11,100ft. This gives you the flexibility to break the hike up into sections and is the most popular choice, especially for those that want to see the sunrise from the peak. The issue is that permits are in greater demand.

Option 2 - Day hike it. My preferred method and only choice because there were no overnight permits available.

I will start by saying this was not easy, but the thought of reaching a country high point has a way of numbing the discomfort. The trailhead sits at 5,000ft and the summit is 12,536 so there is a clean 7,500ft of elevation to be gained, not to mention the mileage, and rocky terrain, and exposed areas to the intense sun of the tropics. (just to try and put that steepness into perspective, there was nearly 5k ft of gain in the first 6 miles) None the less, it was still an incredible trek. If you're fortunate enough to catch the summit on a clear day, you can seen the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean!

The trail itself is easy to follow and there are signs (some with inspirational quotes) at every kilometer until you reach the base camp. From base camp its another 5+ kilometers to the peak, which was my favorite part. What goes up must come down (in one day) so trekking poles are highly recommended to handle all that descent.

No parking is available at the trailhead, so you will either have to walk or get a taxi from San Gerardo like I did at 3:00am!

First morning in Costa Rica so I had to go run around Sabana Park. I just missed a 10K by about 30 minutes, which I would've definitely jumped in given the chance. The national football stadium is here and the first uphill track I have ever seen. :D

Christmas Eve hike up the Oak Grove trail, attempting to summit Signal Peak. Snow was patchy on the way up, but once I hit the saddle at 9800ft, my plans abruptly changed. The trail disappeared in the snow and I didn't have the footwear to make it the final 1.5 miles to the peak. Not to mention I was solo and a storm was supposed to roll in the next day. This trail is very steep, 3,500 feet of gain in the first 3.5 miles. You will definitely have your work cut out trying to bag this peak. I loved every bit of it and will definitely be back!

I woke up to a freezing morning in the Fruita Campground and decided to go for a run to get warm. I began my tour of Capitol Reef on the Freemont River trail, down past the visitor center to the school and petroglyph site. My final destination was Hickman Bridge. This trail is less than 2 miles round trip, but had so many surprises in the short amount of time I spent there. Amazing views and a fun lasso-loop trail to hike. This is a must-do in Capitol Reef!

The sun finally came out and lit up the canyon, so I made the steep climb to Cohab Canyon and ventured over to both viewpoints. This trail is really fun and leaves you with a couple breathtaking views of the main part of Capitol Reef.

This is a great trail around West Mitten Butte. Its easy to run or hike, and a nice place to stop and stretch out the legs on a road trip into Utah. Not to mention the views are world famous.

Took advantage of the December weather and scrambled up Big Horn. Matt, Lisa, Dana and I ventured out West on a Saturday morning to take on the uphill challenge. We all enjoyed the hike, even the really steep sections near the top. It was nice to do an off trail hike without a great deal of brush and catsclaw to chew you up.

Following our long boat ride to Padar Island, we ventured over to the main island of the national park. Komodo Island is the biggest of the three, and home to the largest dragons in the world. Due to strong winds and current, our arrival was delayed so we had to settle for the medium trek. That also put us on the island in the heat of the day and the rangers informed us the chances of seeing a dragon was not very good. I felt defeated after traveling all that way.

So we ventured into the forest and came across one komodo sleeping in the leaves. Real exciting, right? We moved on and my dreams of seeing them interact in their natural habitat was starting to fade. Then I heard a noise off in the distance. Out of the thicket walks a huge male that wandered over to the path we were hiking on. I could not have been more thrilled. We followed for about 50 meters when two other dragons were spotted, a male and a smaller female. The two males squared off in a territorial wrestling match. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! This went on for a good 5 minutes until they gave up and all three rested in the shade.

Not only did we get to witness that, someone noticed a baby dragon in a tree (about the size of a large iguana). It's rare to see this as they live high in the trees to avoid being eaten by the adults until about age three.

It was an experience of a lifetime, one of those places I've always wanted to see ever since I was a kid.

A few things I learned on the island:

Largest (monitor) lizard in the world.
Live up to 25-30 years.
Males grow up to 10 feet.
Weigh up to 150-200lbs.
Can run as fast as 12mph.
Lay eggs, since they are reptiles.
Feed on deer, wild boar and water buffalo.
Can swim, but can't leave the islands because the water is too cold.
Have toxic saliva that slowly coagulates the blood of their prey.
Will eat their own young.
Different sizes and colors on each of the three islands.

First stop on our day tour from Labuan Bajo was the famous Padar Island, which is one of the three komodo islands. It's known for the three colored beaches (white, pink and black sand), and home to only a handful of dragons.

Nothing better than jumping into the ocean after a dry, dusty hike to the summit overlook!

Day hike to the summit of Mt Batur on my first morning in Indonesia. Steep, hot and surprisingly dry hike up the volcano. Most people opt for the sunrise hike, but the timing worked out better for me as a day hike. I underestimated the intensity of the sun and paid for it later. Having a beer post-hike at the hot springs was a nice reward though!
