This was my 3rd segment of the TRT. As usual, it was very beautiful, with lots of views of Lake Tahoe. There were no bugs, which was much different than my experience from Big Meadow to Echo Lake, which was full of mosquitoes. This segment is pretty dry, with the only available water at Star Lake, and a couple small streams right South of Star Lake (see my GPS route for waypoints of water sources). I hiked it with James. We did a side hike up to Freel Peak, which was really awesome. Quite a few people were hiking Freel Peak, and I met a fellow HAZ member (sgtoddball) at the top.

not sure what 100% full is, but this lake was big and had plenty of water

First time hiking Elden. Very well maintained trail, decent amount of traffic (more than I expected for a Thursday). Really enjoyed the views of Flagstaff from this vantage point. I also liked seeing all the alligator Junipers, especially some of the really bigger ones.

I had intended to hike Bixler Saddle to Bill Williams L.O., but my car was not up to going up Bixler Saddle Road. From the prior trip logs I thought I might be able to make it, but it is a definite 4WD only road. I initially tried to come in via Bixler Saddle Rd where it meets Bill Williams Loop Rd, but that road was closed (gate was shut, and sign said "Road Closed"). I went around the dirt road that parallels Bixler Saddle Road until I felt it wasn't prudent to go any further in my Toyota Highlander. I started hiking from there, and pretty much finished at the TH for Bixler Saddle to Bill Williams L.O.. I didn't see anyone else out on the trail. Very pretty area. It was a little warm today, but not bad. I thought about going up Bixler Mountain, but it didn't seem that there were any trails up to that peak. :(

Hiked in the AM with Jeff. Warm, but not too bad as there was a little cloud cover. Saw about 4 of these large lizards with red tails. Quite a few people out hiking this trail today, as Summit Road was closed at the main gate for a "quiet day" for the bikers using Summit Road.

WINDY!!! I picked a really windy day to go. Along the Pumpkin trail ridge on the way up the winds were very strong, as there is no cover. It was a struggle to walk for sections. The day after this it snowed, so I guess I picked a good day.

The burned area is interesting in its own way. It is amazing how large of an area got burned up. The last part of the Pumpkin trail up to the peak is a pretty steep section, and a good workout.

On the drive in I saw a herd of elk. On the drive out, I saw some antelope with a baby. Up top I saw what I think is some kind of grouse, but I'm not sure... The grouse let me get surprisingly close.

Very peaceful hike. I went by myself, and never saw another person all day long. There was nobody manning the lookout tower on top.

I've done the Kendrick trail several times, but this was my first time on Pumpkin and Bull Basin. They look to be much less traveled trails, but still easy enough to follow.

Solo trip to cover Geronimo and the last section of National I've never been on. Geronimo TH is quite small, with basically just a dirt pullout off 20th Street. Hike starts behind people's houses. Hiked over to Corona De Loma peak, and then to Telegraph Pass. Ran low on water, and was lucky enough to run into a park ranger at Buena Vista lookout on the way back who had a water cooler. Saw quite a few bikers on Geronimo, seems to be a popular trail for (advanced) mountain bikers. A little warm during the day. Made it back to vehicle just at sunset. Have now hiked all of National.

Went for a solo hike yesterday. The weather was really nice, and had cloud cover for much of the hike. I did not come across anybody else on this whole hike (it was the middle of the day on a Tuesday...). I started from the junction at San Juan road and Summit road, and hiked counter-clockwise. I thought this would be a good way to go, so I could look towards the Estrella mountains when hiking up on the Alta trail. The views from up on the Alta trail were great. You have excellent 360 panoramic views from up on the ridge. I was glad I brought a light fleece for this section of the hike, as it was actually cool and windy up there. The sections on the National and Bajada were a little less interesting.

Solo afternoon hike from the trailhead at Chandler and 19th Ave along Pyramid trail to Bursera trail until it runs into National trail. I returned back the same way I went out. Saw a couple people in the first mile, but after that I had the place to myself. The west end of South Mountain has a lot of wide open areas, and very few people. This trail is relatively new, within the last few years I believe. It isn't even on my old South Mountain trail map. It has excellent/frequent trail markers, showing your current position on the trail and also the total trail distance, in resolution of 0.01 miles. For example, 1.86/2.85 miles. I had kind of a late start, so ended up hiking back with my headlamp. Thoroughly enjoyable...

Day hike with James. Saw a brown colored black bear on the trail. Didn't seem too interested or worried about us. Beautiful area. Had to catch a plane, so we just hiked until we ran low on time, and then turned around. Lots of trails in this area.

Day hike with James. Originally planned a backpacking trip from Kingsbury South to Big Meadow, but because of smoke from the Rim Fire, we decided to do day hikes. Smoke was definitely there and cut into visibility, but wasn't too bad for hiking. There was only 1 running stream on this segment, and it was a small stream, but good enough if you filter. Scenery was beautiful, and unlike a hike in early June near Big Meadow, there were no bugs to speak of.

This was our first segment of the TRT. There were 5 of us in our group. Started at Big Meadow trailhead, and we shuttled a car over to Echo Lake TH. Scenery was beautiful, and there was plenty of water in streams. However, the mosquitoes were terrible and unfortunately we weren't prepared for them. Would highly recommend bringing a head net and long sleeved shirt/pants. We cut our trip short by one day because of the mosquitoes.

Great hike. Some water flowing near the bottom. Saw another couple hiking, and a bow hunter near the bottom. Great views south from the top of Pine Mtn. Lots of butterflies. A little warm when in direct sun, but this was rare.

Beautiful hike. Saw two mountain bikers coming down, but besides that nobody else on the trail. Lots of butterflies. Saw a couple band tail pigeons, and a big horny toad. I was surprised this trail wasn't on the AZ Topo maps I had on my GPS, as it is a well maintained trail.

Nice sunny and warm day, but it was VERY windy from the saddle to the top. You literally could not stand straight up at the top or you would be blown over. I think it was just especially windy this day, as others who have hiked it before said it wasn't normally that windy.

The lower part of the trail has been recently cleared from fallen trees, but there are still a handful along the trail. Starting around 10,500 feet there was quite a bit of hard packed snow, which was quite slippery.

Beautiful weather. There were several downed trees from the last winter laying across the trail. The last sections of the trail have some small amount of snow. Nobody was manning the fire lookout when we got up there.

My first hike in this area. We parked at the campground, hiked down to Joe Baca Draw where we camped for 2 nights. Never saw another person the whole time we were there. Creek is smaller than I was imagining, and easy to cross without getting your boots wet. One of my friends was hoping to fish, but creek seems too small to support any sizable fish. Saw elk on the way into camp on the first day. The first night we had a pack of coyotes right near our tents howling. I was scared :), but nothing came of it. Hiked over to Brian and Melissa springs and then over to Mexican Hay Lake and back through Joe Baca Draw on day 2. The springs had some water, but I wouldn't plan on getting drinking water out of them unless you were really desperate. On day 3 we just hiked back out. Very nice area, enjoyed it very much. It was pretty dry.

It does have water, but not much right at the spring. Hike down a ways, and it is a little better. Wouldn't plan on getting water from here though, personally. Hike over to the South Fork, much better water.

Pretty much the same as Brian Spring..., as they are right next to each other.
