Finally had a chance to make it back to the point trail after cutting our trip short last year. Hit the trail just after noon and made it to the creek a half hour later. The water was cold but nice as it was hitting the mid 80's in the heat of the day. Made our way down the trail and thru the creek to the site we had last year. Didn't take many pictures on this trip.. theres something about climbing down the canyon wall, with a three day pack, that takes the creativity out of me. The spring was flowing quite nicely, so we decided to get a little crazy and try some of it untreated on the way out.. I know I know, worst Idea ever, but the one upping got pretty fierce the night before, and we all agreed to do it. We're all fine by the way. We spent the days fishing and enjoying the perfect weather. Caught three nice fish one rainbow and two browns. Made good time on our way out, and I was the first one up and out. Did the climb in 30 minutes, shattering my last year record of over an hour haha. All and all another fantastic trip. I will continue to visit this area for years to come.

Added quite a bit to this one, decided to do a little cross country, so pulled off at airplane flat and set off. We got distracted by a small run off and followed that for 2 miles before finally giving in to the fact that we were going the wrong way. climbed the ridge and saw our creek and road. It was kind of a nice side trek, that's where we saw about 50 elk in three different herds, and got properly introduced to the local thorns :? . After that it was smooth sailing, hit the road for about 3 and a half more miles, crossed the creek at a sketchy log jam and made camp. Followed the proper way back to the cars. Still a bit cold up there. We still saw a lot of snow and standing water on top of the rim. But the road is in good enough shape we made it in a prius ;) .

Mom and I set out for our weekly trek.. wanted to do cathedral rock but the parking lot was full. Hit bell rock instead, sedona never disappoints, theres always something you havent seen or a different angle to appreciate.. There was just enough snow to make an appearance but not be a nuisance, I love sedona, and the fact that I've been able to show my mom some of the most gorgeous hikes nature has to offer..

Wanted to check out the falls and see if I could catch some early snow melt. We were up by seven springs last week and the amount of water up there seemed promising. Mom and I took our weekly hike up to the falls today, it was her first time there, and we picked a good day for her first visit. Lots of water, well more than I've seen in my last 5 attempts at least. Another pleasant day for a stroll in AZ.

Random need for an overnighter, so me and a friend threw this one together at the last minute. Hit the trailhead at 4:45 and beat feat to the campsite. Got there just about sundown, and set up camp. It got pretty cold overnight but nothing too crazy, great clear night to check out the stars. Tried my hand at a startrail picture, and between that and the cold my battery was dead fast so not many pictures. Overall good trip...better than the last time I was out there and took a sharp stick in the eye (well technically it was four sticks in the eye, but whos counting).

Took the ride to break in my friends new camera. Nice easy hike with some interesting views. Still playing around with my new camera too. Definitely more fun than my old point and shoot. We should have hung around a bit longer, the sunset on the ride home was amazing.

Headed up to Sedona today for a mother/son hike. It has been far too long for both of us, especially me.. Stopped at Bell Rock to check the temp and grab a few quick shots, but mom decided it was too cold, so we stopped off for a nice breakfast first... A pleasant day as always in Boynton Canyon, and got to test out the new camera :D . Met up with Robert on the way up to Boynton Vista, and got to hear about his recent troubles with the law. (if you haven't met him, or didn't know his name, he's the guy that hands out the heart shaped rocks). Seems that not everyone shares his spread the love mentality. After a quick chat, and a song on the flute we were back on our way.. Spent a little time at the "vortex", my mom is into that kinda stuff, and headed back home. Great way to spend a Friday.

Nice little loop hike h to dt to v back to h. lots of nice loop hike options in the area. Was a great morning with my Mom. Did a little shopping afterwards and I ended up with a new side arm!!!! Crazy considering the women that always taught me growing up, that guns are BAD, and never ever owned one ended up buying me one... Guess that worried call she made to the ranger station over the weekend to check on me after we missed our back in town time by about 4 hours paid off in my favor. The ranger asked if I had a gun and that must have got her thinking..

Well what can I say about willow springs canyon.. Starts off nice and mellow with a stinky (sulphur as previously stated) green creek to follow. Honestly the area is quite nice, the meadow and the calm water make for a very serene experience, but this is the spot that lulls you to sleep per say, as to whats to come.. The more you press on the more difficult it tends to get. Forget any version of a trail short of one made by the local game. Mostly an ankle/knee breaking jump from rock to duck under fallen log.. Oh yes,it is worth mention, that the amount of dead fall encountered during this hike is formidable... You absolutely need to be sure of your route finding skills on this one. Lots of stopping and looking for the "path of least resistance" involved. We logged 5 miles of zig zagging rock to rock, and bank to bank, to finally find a decent place to set up camp. Of course we passed many established ones on the way back..But hey theres something to be said about icicles snagging up your zipper when you're trying to get out of your tent in the morning(I really need to buy a sleeping bag). Hiked out in the same fashion. No real WOW factor or amazing views, but the solitude is what all the pain makes worth while. Not a soul, though we did encounter all the "grow materials" mentioned in Chumleys triplog. We found most lines cut and all trash to have been there for some time. So don't worry yourselves there. Just know it gets pretty rugged really fast.

Wonderful but slightly disappointing hike for me and the parents today. Seems my knee acting up at pumphouse wash last week wasn't a one time thing... 4 miles in and the acl was already giving me the business... But the views kept me going. Hit the trailhead at 8:15 and was back at the car by 12:15. Hard to pick which is better boynton or oak creek. I think I enjoyed this one slightly more, but that was most likely due to the weather (we did boynton in july). Lots of people on the trail today, as to be expected, much more on the way in as we were on our way out. Next weeks overnight will be the determining factor if I'll be able to make Hippy's supes 2 nighter on the 10th (fingers crossed). But with starting a job that requires 12+ miles of walking a day on the 19th, I may need to rest the knee for a couple weeks :? .

Added a bit extra to this trip exploring further down the wash. Saw more fall colors following the wash to the south before heading back and hitting the actual trail in the description. Very interesting area as far as the rock formations at the beginning, and the small cave area. We found an owl hanging out in said cave, and he was nice enough to sit pretty while we snapped as many pics as we can get. It looked like we were about a day late on some of the fall colors, but south in fry canyon was very nice. All and all a great area to explore and I'll be back. Headed up to weatherford loop afterwards for a few more miles on the day. Another beautiful area as well, although we missed out on the aspens there. All the leaves were already down. Had lunch in a nice sunny spot, enjoyed the nice crisp thin air, and soaked it all in... Another perfect day in AZ.

Did a quick 3 mile loop (according to my cell phone GPS) with my mom while her car was in the shop. Started on the spur cross trail to the metate, then hooked back up with the other side of spur cross back to the parking lot. Nice little hike, no water in the creek this far down. Highlight would have to be seeing a big red cardinal on the way back to the car. My mom likes to freak out about those kinds of things, so according to her amidst the tears "I'm all set". Wasn't able to snap a picture, of course. Didn't want to disturb the bird or go off trail, so that was one for memory only. I always enjoy getting to hit a trail other than thunderbird park with my mom.

What a great day! This hike had it all, even got our towers buzzed by an F-16. I couldn't even begin to imagine how much of a rush it would be to actually be in it, as we stood there in awe of the fighter jet 400 feet above us. It was going to be an overnight, but that changed because it was raining the entire way there. Started out just passed the seven springs campground and headed down cave creek #4.

The weather couldn't have been better. As soon as we got out of the car and started walking the rain stopped and it was cool and pleasantly overcast. 3 miles in to a lunch break at a very decent looking swimming hole.

Got back on the trail and headed west for another mile, but at 12:30 and fully exposed to the now clear sunny day we decided 8 miles would be enough. By the time we made it back to the car it was already starting to rain again. Hit camp creek falls on the way out just to make sure there was nothing left in our tanks. That horse churned sand can be pretty rough. Saw a snake and a tarantula but no water in the falls... driest I've ever seen it.

Stopped in Cave Creek for a beer and a burger, home in time to watch the lightning storm where we were possibly going to stay.

Took a quick run up to badger springs for a nice day hike. My friend has been bugging me to do this hike since we met in 2005, and finally the stars had aligned and we were able to make it up there. I was a little discouraged at first due to a group of yahoos with rifles, that seemed to miss the many "no target shooting" signs along the way. They proceeded to tell us that technically they shouldnt be shooting up there, and got the "I used to be with the sherfiffs department way back when" speech. As to somehow negate their blatant breaking of the law. We didn't hear any shots and didn't see them again after the trail hit the canyon :worthy: Not much water at all, and what was there was muddy. Nothing that was very inviting for a swim as we had hoped. It was a very nice day with a cool breeze, and just being out of town was good enough for me. Hiked upstream first then downstream from the trailhead. We didnt make it very far downstream as it was high noon. The temperature seemed to rise 20 degrees and the breeze disappeared in a matter of seconds.

Got out for an overnighter of solitude after visiting the disney land hikes of Colorado(garden of the gods, and seven falls) Beautiful places, but paved paths and crowds arent really my thing. We had 3 other people in our group and two of which havent backpacked before. We made good time and got in about four miles and set up camp. Past the 3.5 mile mark there isnt much of a trail and our newbies were starting to whine so we back tracked a bit and setup camp. Great canyon with a nice mix of red rock and typical high desert views. Water was refreshing and cool. One person in our group pulled a nice rainbow trout out of the creek and several small largemouth bass. I missed the mountain lion that ran about 20 feet away threw our camp because I was still in my tent ](*,) . The new thermarest was too comfy... All in all another great canyon hike. Shorter than I would have liked, but with guys that are new to it, and always pack too much I couldnt of asked for more.

Took my parents and girlfriend out for a day hike. First canyon for my parents and first time in Sedona for my girlfriend. What a great way to get them out and interested in future hikes. Its a beautiful canyon. Saw a few white tail deer, got a picture of one... Funny how they always seem to know when you're going to snap a picture of them. They always turn away! ](*,) great hike, will be back when the weather is a little better. It was hot on the way out. Just not looking forward to the fall crowds there. :FG:

Did the hike down at about 11:30 not too hot, but just about perfect to get into the cool water waiting below...WAY BELOW.. It is very steep but nothing that cant be done with a 40+ pound pack on. (I always pack too much haha) Got down to the creek about an hour or so later, and I was the first one to get in a little deeper than I wanted to. After a few falls, mishaps and bushwacking we got to our camp about three miles in. Set up camp did a little more exploring and settled in for the night. My legs and one persons lack of food forced us to cut the trip from two nights to one. Hiked up and out the following day after some debate on how long we wanted to stay. This is a great canyon and we all wished we could have stayed longer. So much to see and explore, but thats the reason for trips back right? lots of good elevated camps all along the way. We will definitely be back for another round. The hike back up the canyon wall to the trail head was not very fun for me at all. Took me about an hour and a half to make it up. Of course all that means is that I need to get out more.

Took the trip this weekend. We started at the Chevelon Crossing campground and headed for the creek. We made it to Durfree Crossing the first day and set up camp. The trail is fairly easy to get off of as we found ourselves many times. So after a late start and passing a good looking campsite about 2 miles back we were happy to find the camp at Durfree. We spent the next day scouting out some areas further down the creek, but the increasing fresh signs of bears forced us to turn back. We decided to keep our camp at Durfree and explore that area some more. Hiked up a ridgeline behind our camp to get some nice views from the top of the canyon. Headed out the next morning, getting lost again even after marking the trail on the way in. The weather was absolutely perfect, nice and cool at night. It was a great trip. :D
