Enjoyed our hike along the Mail Trail where we explored about half of the trail along the mesa. Parking lot had an RV camping in it but otherwise no one else on the trail. With the long grass the cairns were more difficult to follow than usual making finding the trail quite exciting at times. Following the track downloaded from Hike Arizona helped :) even just as a general direction. Not a lot of animals or birds around today.

Wanted to hike on the Bearfoot Trail for quite some time so after spending a night in Strawberry it was finally time to do it. Parked near US87 and found a short spur trail leading to the trail and on we went. First part was mostly level and quite enjoyable with some great views over Pine. Then it started looping around Pine with some switchbacks and getting quite close to some of the houses before entering the cool forest of Pine Canyon. Returning we saw a few deer and overall quite a few birds including band tailed pigeons (that we always enjoy). Surprisingly desolate trail vs what we expected especially near Pine with no else hiking it on a Saturday.

Today we planned a loop from Bushnell Tanks parking area towards Bushnell Tanks proper then cutting towards Arizona Trail returning on it back to the parking area. The hike towards Bushnell Tanks was great even though the former road has degraded quite a lot since our last hike due to the summer monsoon rains. Still to our surprise we met a couple of jeeps coming the other way, guess there is a way to get access to the closed road :). Lots of wildflowers of butterflies also along this stretch with flowing water at the beginning. Cutting towards the Arizona Trail we followed what appeared to be a road on the maps but especially on the last stretch really doesn't exist anymore - it is however obvious at that point where the former road meets the Arizona Trail. The AZT in this area was not always well defined and while returning we had a few times to stop and search for the continuation of the trail until reaching Sycamore Creek. From there the trail was well maintained but climbed quite a bit before the descend back towards Sycamore Creek and then the parking area. Great hike and we met only another group of hikers having a picnic on the road.

Today we wanted to go out for a relatively shorter hike on the Highline trail starting at the Hatchery trailhead. In the end we decided to go west on a stretch that we never hiked before. From the trailhead there is a climb to another road leading to a gated community and from there it is all wilderness. We decided to try an old section of the trail and then returned on the new section, in fact the old section was sometimes easier to follow but a few times the trail got lost in the tall grass, the hike however was quite spectacular in that section. Flowers were in bloom along the trail, also quite a few birds and we even heard the elk bugling which can be quite scary. Overall great weather and a fun hike, it was great to be out on the trails again.

We started at E Cross L trailhead where we were the only car - in fact we didn't meet anyone else during our hike. E Cross L is quite overgrown and easy to lose especially at the higher elevations. We followed it as best we could to the intersection with the Venezia Trail which we took down to the Senator Highway. Venezia Trail is in much better shape compared to the E Cross L trail and easy to follow and then we closed the loop be hiking along Senator highway back to the trailhead.

Great natural area with some beautiful views - however finding a parking spot at the trailhead might be difficult. The first part on the Echo Trail is the most scenic as you pass through the rock hoodoos while descending towards the Hailstone Trail. Hailstone Trail was mostly level but with relatively few trees and southern exposure. The climb back up to the parking lot especially at midday can be exhausting especially in May so lots of water is recommended (we saw a few people having some trouble on the Ed Riggs part of the loop).

Wanted to explore this trail for quite some time and today while in the area we decided to hike up the trail for a bit. Quite a nice trail, well signed and maintained with some nice views. Also enjoyed the short nature and history loop trails near the campground.

Hiked a section of the Highline Trail starting from Washington Park Trailhead. Enjoyed the hike, the trail is well defined and we explored also a few of the older sections which might have been faster but were getting eroded. Saw a moose along the trail, some bear tracks and no other hikers.

Hiked on a rainy day (what are the odds :) ) in search of the Colima warbler. No luck with the warbler but great views and a nice trail even though it was quite muddy at times especially towards the top. Lots of birds and even a few deer along the trail. Well maintained with a steady but relatively easy elevation gain.

Wanted to do the shorter loop for some time and with the higher temperatures in Phoenix we decided that today is the day. Nice weather here at higher elevations and even some snow patches - cool! The hike was easy going even met a kingsnake along the rocks at some point. There were a few other hikers in the beginning but afterwards we were alone on the trail. The shortcut for the shorter loop that we wanted to explore is not signposted but it is usable, seems like it is an abandoned trail.

Started from Bushnell Tanks TH and decided to explore if it is possible to reach the Little Daisy Mine area using the old roads. The area was just recently re-opened after the big fire and there are signs everywhere however the roads were mostly spared and are easy to follow except on a short stretch where they are overgrown - still it is clear in what direction you are supposed to go. There are some ruins, a couple rusted cars and even an old mine shaft at Little Daisy Mine and after a late lunch we explore a bit this out of the way place and then it is time to return via the same way.

Wanted to do a late afternoon walk after work given the good weather and also use our State Trust Land pass a bit more so we decided to explore this area. Quite a few trails (human and animal) and washes offered easy walks through the nice desert environment and opportunities to get close to the river. Met only a couple of bikes that likely started from the Phon D Sutton area.

Trying to use our State Trust Land permit a bit more we decided to explore this area. There are multiple possible parking areas safely off US 60 that allow access to the State Trust land area. We followed mostly the roads and besides one other hiker didn't see anyone else. Human at least - there were lots of cows tracking us but none were too curious about us. Quite a few desert birds also and an enjoyable flat hike through typical desert habitat.

Wanted to explore this hiking/biking trail system for quite some time especially from this entrance and today we finally had a couple hours in the evening after work for exploration. The climb from the parking lot on the route we took was a bit strenous with the trail being quite eroded in places. We also met quite a few bikes in this first stretch. The further we went the fewer people and bikes - that was true especially in the Twisted Sisters portion of the hike. There is also a small mine along the way and some great views after you reach the crest. We stayed there a bit at sunset and watched the sun set over downtown Phoenix while bats were flitting above us - fun.

An exploration of old roads north of Superior starting from Silver King Mine Rd. Parking was near a corral and the road till there is in a reasonable good shape. Our hike started by crossing the wash (the road is completely washed out) and then following a mix of old roads and trails on the other side while exploring also a few side canyons. Some mining remains can be seen at a few spots along the trail.

Enjoyed the shorter loop hike through the area using the Walkin' Jim Loop and the Little Jim shortcut. Beautiful desert scenery and views of the surrounding mountains. No one else on the trail even though the parking lot is full with trucks that unloaded ATVs - luckily no ATVs were seen or heard near the hiking trail. Following the trail is mostly easy but still more effort is needed not to lose the trail compared to other more established trails.

Starting from our parking spot on Maggie Mine Road we then accessed The Black Canyon Trail for a section we haven't explored before. Today to our surprise it was full of runners - it was the Black Canyon Ultras Run - not what we expected on a usually empty trail. After continuing on the trail for a while we got bored of trying to avoid the runners and decided to cut back towards the road which we managed to do after a few false starts. Returning on the road we walked to a couple overlooks of I17 before returning to the car. Nice hike on a beautiful day even though the area was more busy than expected.

Finding parking is always an adventure for this trail due to the number of ATV trailers parked in the parking lot. After finding a spot the trail starts deceptively easy through beautiful desert terrain. We saw a few donkeys along the trail which certainly was great. Then the climb started and that was quite strenous at least for us but for most of the time the trail was easy enough to follow and the views made it worthwhile. The false peak certainly was deflating a bit but in the end we made it to the true peak - yoohoo! Returning we barely made it down before darkness came (which was great as we didn't want to do the descent at night) and then continued to the parking lot while getting quite scared along the way by a floating set of red eyes (that we finally identified as being a donkey :)).

Wanted to do a longer hike on Christmas Day and the Bronco Trail that we never hiked before seemed like a great option. There was no one in the parking lot and we didn't see anyone on the trail - quite unusual for a trail in this area. Weather was great, with quite a few birds near the trail and a few jackrabbits. Bronco Trail was in good shape (we could follow it on the way back only using moonlight) but the Cottonwood Trail while still in good condition and easy to follow was starting to get overgrown in places especially while in the wash. Lots of great views especially while following the ridgeline after the initial climb and then of Skull Mesa and Quien Sabe Peak further along the trail.

After camping nearby today was our day to finally climb Kendrick Mountain. We tried once before but it was too late in the day and on the hot side last time so we arrived earlier in the day this time. Parking lot was quite full but we found a parking spot a bit off and up we went. Trail was in a good shape with a good slope but it is relentless up and up and up again. Lots of flowers along the trail with many butterflies especially in the morning. Quite a few birds were also seen along the trail including Clark's Nutcrackers closer to the peak. We enjoyed the views along the trail, they gave us a good idea how high we climbed compared to the parking lot especially as we were nearing the top. cabin is in good condition and the lookout was manned (even though not climbable due to covid). Lots of people on the trail this Saturday - quite a bit more than we expected but it is our first time on the trail so maybe the traffic was normal. Overall it was a very enjoyable hike even though it was quite strenous for us.
