Later start than normal for a hike like this as we hit the trail around 9 with very pleasant temps and nice clouds. Made quick time down to the creek and to the top of the Big Dipper! It’s hard to get down to the bottom without either having a risky climb or a bushwhack- we opted for the 2nd option. It’s a beautiful spot but it was partly ruined by some sort of moths that were all over the trees below the falls, jumped all over us if we got near. Headed back and spent plenty of time at my favorite water hole in the area. Not long after we retrace our steps we see a black tail rattler just chilling by a tiny campsite by the creek. #1 of the season! It got scared easily and hid in a cluster of boulders after we photographed it. We crossed the creek after to finish up and probably 20 feet away from the first rattlesnake, it a small Arizona black coiled up under a rock. Have no idea how I spotted it, literally a needle in a haystack! Wasn’t even sure if it was a snake for a second it was so blended in. Love seeing these guys and made the trip worthwhile. Lunch in Crown King but the adventure wasn’t over there! After getting into I-17 my car starts driving very loud and my speed plummets… flat tire :( . Didn’t think I had a jack so I called AAA when I found it right after and did most of it. Fitting end to an adventurous day!

This is becoming a birthday tradition! Conditions were quite different than last year when it was in the 40s and snowy versus this year it was sunny and 80 degrees. Hung out at one of the water holes for a while and planned on going to the big falls until I jumped into the water and lost my watch. I swam to the bottom trying to grab it to no avail. Kept looking for about 45 minutes and still nothing :( fun to be back here and conditions are good for swimming right now if you can brave the cold water temp.

Inspired by @DesertNymph and @00blackout , I decided it was time to check “The Twins” off my list. Left Phoenix at 5:45, arrived around 7:30 with a coyote sighting along the drive in. Was in a bit of a time crunch (so obviously do a 20 miler) so I knew I had to get going quick. Big Kahuna had much better flow than when I was here in October so I knew the Twins would have solid flow. Seeing snow on some of the northern slopes on the mountains was awesome! You know you’re a Phoenix kid when some old ice/snow is picture worthy! An Arizona state trooper helicopter was flying very low to the ground for a while, interesting. Ran into a friendly HAZ member on the way there and back who was backpacking but hadn’t heard of the twin falls. Pictures don’t do the falls justice as the sheer cliffs get your adrenaline going right away. It’s a bit hard to get a good view of both at the same time but could be done with a bit of climb on the north mesa. Had a well earned sandwich at the 2 falls and got going on the way back where I saw much more people in the last few miles. Pretty solid time overall and would be worth coming back for an overnight stay. One of the better hikes I’ve done!

Been here countless times but accidentally took a different spur trail than I normally do. Turns out, it was a good mistake and I got to see part of the canyon I’d never seen before. Canyon is raging with clear, cold water right now!!

Figured Gordon would be dry but hoped to venture further down the canyon to the springs like Ive previously done but the water was too high (but not flowing) and too cold to go through. Turned around and decided to check out an old favorite. Nobody around at Haigler.

Quick Thanksgiving jaunt to the river and back. It’s unsurprising flowing very nicely after all the rain. Could be worth kayaking!! ;)

With some rain Saturday and rain Sunday morning, I thought it’d be worth a shot to check out some of the drainages. The original plan was to check out gold and gun creek but after parking I was concerned about crossing back over Tonto Creek with high flow. It was probably a good decision as on the FR drive out one of the washes had began to flow. I decided to check out a canyon I had never seen before. Rain quickly stopped and there was no water in Park Creek at the TH. It’s a fairly tough climb and easy to get off the trail (as I did several times). The first view into the canyon gave me some hope and there did end up being a small flow. Short ways down the canyon to the falls and there was not much in the “double falls”. The spot above it was the highlight of the day with a very deep swimming hole that I didn’t go in to. Made good time on the way back and stopped at Sally Mae’s in Punkin Center. All in all a fun but slightly disappointing day. Hope these rains get the drainages going even more.

Spent the night near Barnhardt trailhead and got an early start around 6 Saturday morning. Made good time getting up to Big Kahuna before the real adventure started. I planned on this loop but in a crunch for time I decided to just take Sandy Saddle trail to check out the Twins. I soon realized this was a big mistake as Sandy Saddle “trail” is in the worst shape I’ve seen any trail. After 1/4 mile or so the trail is completely gone and you have to push through bushes. We persevered for a while before deciding this is going to be too long and it is downright un enjoyable. Upper Barnhardt Canyon runs through this area which was a nice reward for our troubles. Made good time getting back and despite all of the scratches it was a great day!

After 2 weekends of heavy rains in the high country, the drainages have a healthy flow. I’ve seen this area a couple times from canyoneers on here but that’s all. Hard to get down there without a rope but it’s well worth it.

Back at the gorge for a quick dip after going to camp tontozona in the morning. I was confused as to why I didn’t hear water rushing down the canyon like I normally do and was even more surprised to see just a trickle over all of the falls. I thought this canyon flew strong all year but I stand corrected. Water is a great temperature and was a good stop before heading to mackys for lunch and eventually home…

Back in Sedona this year and planned on doing the full 14 miles of west fork if I could get some company but couldn’t, so decided to go in a few miles here. Got started around 7:30 which I wouldn’t leave any later than that. Nice as always, stopped at the “subway” at the end where my dog and I dipped in the water!

A friend offered to take me down this canyon in which I had previously gone down and believed was only fed by runoff. The canyon is dry most of the way but some beautiful springs later on deliver flow in the creek. Ending at a beautiful blue swimming hole is well worth the scratches.

After my visit to “Tonto Narrows” last summer I was intrigued to go back but it was quite the price of admission to get into the area. I constructed a legal (I think) and easier route to the narrows that avoids all private property in the area. Left PHX at 5:30 in hopes to beat the heat to one of the closer swimming areas to Phoenix. It was hot even with a 7 AM start unfortunately. Made decent time to the narrows which we cooled off there before entering the gates of hell. I hoped to make it to the waterfall area others have shared here and with a few swims and about a mile we were there. Beautiful to see but would’ve been nicer with more flow and better lighting. Water was much colder here but plenty of places to jump. As always 15-18 inch fish swim in the pools below. After some relaxing time we headed back before one last stop at the narrows before the dreaded hike back which was hot and seemed more thorny than the way in. Back to the truck which read 97 degrees. Another amAZing day in Hellsgate.

Temps had cooled down a little bit so I figured I’d check this out while in the area. I was hoping to get to the “waterfall” area as described by others but quickly was reminded I hiked 20 miles yesterday… I kept taking lots of break so figured I’d turn back as it was getting warm. Hardly any water in any of the keeper holes. It’s certainly worth doing if you’re in the area and looking to get away from the crowds. Cooled off in Oak Creek after.

In flagstaff for a few days and it’s sweltering anywhere else than going above 10000 feet. I had been up humphreys from snowbowl last summer but wanted to try from this side. I was unaware that the road to the trailhead is closed 3 miles below the trailhead, great… I quickly realized I was not going to Humphrey’s today and wanted to reach a different peak. It’s absolutely hell going straight up the mountain at 9000 ft elevation. I contemplated but ended up tapping out at Doyle Saddle. Views from the valley below of the mountains made the trip worth it. Was a bit above 19 miles when I was back and did some circles to get from 20.

First time in this area trying to cool off and make it to the pink granite narrows. I’ve never seen the tonto so brown and low flow, not enough runoff this winter to get rid of the silt. Water was very pleasant as it’s required to get in very early. Tested out my new dry bag I got for my birthday and it was a success! Highlight of the trip was seeing my first rattlesnake of ‘25.
