| no partners | | While staying in Tucson, the urge to do a Catalina hike struck. I drove up the Catalina Highway with nothing specific in mind. I stopped in Summerhaven briefly, and decided on Aspen Draw and the Meadow Trail. Dozens of photo stops after leaving the ski area, I reached radio ridge where I stopped to enjoy the amazing view. I wondered how close I could actually get to the summit of Mount Lemmon, and decided to give it a go. I followed the observatory fence into the forest, and soon emerged onto what appeared to be the actual summit on the north edge of the fence. Sweet! Found a survey cap and a register nearby, just outside the fence. After enjoying the views I returned to the Mt Lemmon trailhead, and turned onto the meadow trail. It was just as beautiful as I had remembered. At the end of the meadow trail, I turned east onto the Mt Lemmon trail. Made my first visit to Lemmon Rock lookout, where David the lookout guy welcomed me up for some amazing views. Discovering that the ski area parking lot would be locked at 5 pm, I cut my visit short. I walked the highway back to the ski area, and got my first glimpse of Canada del Oro's depths. After reaching my truck and lingering among the aspens for a bit, I drove down from the Catalinas and headed back to Safford for the weekend. There's nothing like an afternoon on an awesome sky island! I could not have had a better time. |
