This one beat my top AEG by lightyears and I definitely felt it. I've never done anything close to that kind of gain in a day but pretty much knew how I'd feel by the end of it-- tired as pumpkin :) . I had a totally new set of hiking partners today and everyone seemed to go at their own pace. JaunJaimeiii is a speed machine beyond compare and Katie, the HAZ newbie, put me to shame. Johnlp also left me in the dust somewhere. Jim and I took our time and enjoyed the hike as much as possible taking advantage of breaks in the shade and the cool streams. We finished in 8.5 hrs which I thought was pretty good for this kind of gain only to find that the rest of the crew did it in 6.5 :? . Thats seems crazy to me. Kudos to them!

Romero Pools had a little water left. The highlight of this hike was definitely the Wilderness of Rocks trail. I wish that stretch had gone on for longer (and not just because it wasn't steep :) ).

Jim made fun of us early on for all being so excited to see a deer. Apparently he sees so many up north that they are "annoying" :D -- proof of how diverse our state is. Though, when we came across an angry rattler later in the day, he climbed up a slap of rock to avoid it-- giving it more space than I've ever seen someone give a snake :sl: .

It was a great day. It was a little warm at times but nice breezes and elevation gain helped keep it at bay. The last set of switchbacks was a bit of a battle but I knew we were on the home stretch as the trail turned to forest road. It felt good to have a trail kick my butt again. :)
