Early start, zipping up from Tucson to Gold Canyon to meet the crew. Discovered it's actually quicker for people from Oro Valley to get to Peralta or Rogers than it is for those in the West Valley or North Valley in Phoenix! It's weird, I live at the base of the Catalinas, can see Lemmon from my place, but it takes longer to drive to the top Lemmon than it does to drive 80+ miles to this part of the Supes. :-s

We started out with headlamps for an hour or so as we went east on Pinto. The trail started out good, but once we crossed Pinto Creek the trail started getting choked out in places by overgrown brush. About 3 hours in we left the Pinto and started our bushwhack toward Mound Mountain.

I'm glad I didn't know what I was getting myself into! Y-I-K-E-S. For much of this time the manazanita, holly and oak were so densely packed that we were having to step from one clump of bent-over branches to another clump, and our feet weren't even touching the ground for many of these stretches. Thankfully though the catclaw and locus were only in a few areas. It was only a couple of miles or so off-trail out of 19, but it took 40% of our hiking time.

In retrospect, it was a little cool to look at terrain like that, look at a GPS, and try to figure out how to navigate the desert brush jungle. That+the bushwhack+the elevation+the lack of water=quite an accomplishment, at least that's how we felt! We celebrated once we made it to the top of Mound and signed the register, knowing the trail and the elevation would be better now but we were still miles away from water.

I checked for water for us at Whiskey Spring, but it was stagnant and by that point were were less than a mile to Reavis Creek so we decided to just move forward. We started filtering and MAN, that water came out clear and GOOD!

That water gave us a second wind, and the final six and a half miles back to Rogers TH was minimal elevation and maximum speed. Especially from Reavis Saddle...once we started descending and kept up a 3mph+ pace all the way down. Even when we hit the bottom and started heading up the final 400ft to the trailhead we kept close to that pace; darkness fell at the bottom and we did the final push up with headlamps again.

For a couple of years I've wanted to do Mound Mountain and Circlestone. The other guys wanted to as well. We didn't make Circlestone due to our water need, but the views from atop Mound Mountain were incredible. I remember seeing the Pinals and the Anchas in the east, and we could even see Camelback and the Estrellas in the west. We could see Four Peaks to the north and could see Picacho Peak, Mt. Lemmon and Pusch Ridge to the south.

Thanks Joe for having John and I join you on this adventure! Thanks for driving into Rogers as well. John, great meeting you!

Lastly, thanks to gpsjoe. As I posted this triplog I noticed this is one of the 16 trip descriptions he wrote for us, and what we did today off trail hacking our own way up Mound Mountain with our GPSes would have made him proud. :A1:
