Talked JohnLP into another AZT adventure. We did the Walnut Canyon section and then continued on around Flagstaff via the Equestrian Bypass (AZT 32). I am still perplexed by the whole two trails with their own numbers around/thru Flagstaff but that's just me.

Anyway to start off we met up on Shultz Pass and then headed down to Marshall Lake in my Jeep. The directions to the actual trailhead could have been a little better but it was easy enough to find. The weather was great and we were off on our journey. Once at Fisher Point the signs get a little confusing but I had been there before which helped. We made our way up and past the Fisher Point overlook and continued on. Then comes a 3 way junction that is even more confusing. Good thing we had John's GPS because the signage here hurts more than it helps. A couple small arrows would have done wonders.

Earlier in the day we stashed some water at the FR303 trailhead for John. This was 13.4 miles into the trip and it came up quick. All along the way the scenery was nice and it was a pretty easy go. In due time we came to the Highway 40 crossing where you go thru the tunnel. Here again the signage was poor and we had to resort to the GPS. If you are doing this section going south to north and reach the old asphalt highway you have gone a tenth of a mile too far. Turn back and take the dirt road to the east and in a quarter of a mile you will find the tunnel.

On the other side is passage 32 and the tunnel under the train tracks. I don't know what it is about homeless people and trains but somehow they seem to go hand in hand. We saw evidence of a small village on the other side where people without dwellings appear to sleep at night.

As we made our way thru this passage the scenery slowly started to improve. Once over by little Elden and on around to Shultz Pass it got real nice again. A half mile before the finish the trail headed in two directions. John followed the GPS track and I went the other way towards Shultz Tank. As it would turn out I got to his van and he found some guys with beer. Actually he was on the path to the next section which we had planned on looking for anyways.

Things got a little confusing for a short bit and there were some ups and downs along the way but all in all it was a great hike. I always enjoy hiking with JohnLP and he was a real trooper even when the elevation started to get to him. Thanks for hanging in there John and thanks for helping me set up my car for the next day's hike.
