| no partners | | Started out at a little before 6am and headed out from the Stage Stop Inn Motel. I passed the Post Office and was on my way. In reading the trail description it says take a left in a quarter mile from the post office on Temporal Canyon Road. I was looking for this but it is actually 1st Ave. I went on down past the school to see if there was a Temporal Canyon Rd but there isn't. I turned back and that's when I saw the AZT sign pointing down 1st Ave. As it would turn out 1st and TCR are basically one in the same.
The first half of this hike is okay but mainly follows that above mentioned road. Then when it reaches the Walker Basin Trailhead it gets real good. From here it takes a single track up and over a saddle with killer views of Mt. Wrightson and of Josephine.
From there it is pretty much downhill all the way. You pass several interpretive signs detailing the area's history with an old gold mining operation and it's water flume. Very interesting indeed. When I finished the hike I took my car up to Kentucky Camp which was the Headquarters for the mining operation and checked things out. It was later sold to an attorney for back taxes. He called the area Greaterville. Kentucky Camp is currently under renovation by the forest service and one of the homes can be rented out for stay. It also falls along section 5 of the Arizona Trail and there is running water and bathrooms.
The second half of this hike was spectacular and the history lesson was a bonus. Temps were hot but bearable. This hike and the previous days hike put me over the halfway mark on the Arizona Trail south to north journey! Woo Hoo! |
