He's training for the Wonderland trail and wanted to get a solid 25+ miles over the course of the weekend. It sounded like fun and he was driving so I said yes.
We left Phx early Saturday morning and made our way to Flag. We decided to start with the Weatherford Trail as a day hike. We parked his SUV at Hart Prarie trailhead and were off. We made steady progress up the trail and quickly passed the junction for Kachina and Shultz Tank. We proceeded as the trail had a steady elevation gain. The switchbacks came and we kept moving. This was my first time on this trail and it was beautiful! Aspen's are everywhere and the views are amazing!
After considerable work heading up the switchbacks we arrived at Doyle Saddle. The views are again spectacular! We continued on and arrived at Fremont Saddle. This took a lot of effort and we both were feeling winded. As we at lunch the clouds moved in and a steady rain started falling. We got our rain gear out and decided to start heading back. Luckily the rain lightened up as we returned. We made a solid pace as we headed down the trail. After a while we were back at the SUV and were off to find a campspot. The plan was to hit Kachina the next day. |
