after seeing several recent triplogs that mentioned the aspen on inner basin trail, angela suggested that we check it out sunday
i've been up here years ago, on the old road
the new trail is so much nicer, with good footing and gentle switchbacks through beautiful forest
the aspen are incredible
we also used the words spectacular, amazing and gorgeous many times
this isn't a grove; it's an entire forest of the largest and most numerous aspen i've seen
we took enough pictures, so hopefully those will convey what words cannot
emerging from that part of the trail, we walked up the road into the inner basin proper
interesting pump houses, open meadow lined with more aspen and pines, and that great view of all the peaks
took a short break at the "bus stop"
continued on up the trail, which was a little steeper toward the top
our original plan was to go to the weatherford junction and return
discussed continuing on to either doyle or fremont saddle for a lunch break
borrowed a map and solicited opinions from some people and thought doyle would be nice
not much elevation change along that mile, and could look down into inner basin
we had lunch in the little log enclosure, enjoying magnificent views of the cirque and dry lake hills/elden area
kinda breezy and cool up there, but had some shelter
returned the same way and enjoyed the afternoon light and different perspectives all the way down
just a few patches of snow remain up high
spent extra time in the aspen forest
quite a few people on this side of the mountains - maybe a couple dozen
had an odd encounter with a gal who left her backpacking partner and came down the inner basin trail instead of weatherford to schultz tank where their car was parked
angela kindly agreed to take her back to schultz tank, but we didn't quite understand the logic and wondered if and when her partner might find her as it was getting dark
so we got a tour of the dry lake hills and the burn area
good burger at bun huggers
one fantastic glimpse of the super moon on the way down from flagstaff, then it was obscured by clouds
thanks for driving, angela
nice work on the ascent to weatherford
enjoyed your company, as always
excellent choice for the plan B hike yesterday!
this hike leads to several more on the list:
abineau-bear jaw loop
doyle peak, perhaps via weatherford
humphrey's summit via inner basin
just love this area
