Get your camping gear ready for Camp Grasshopper
This should prove to be a great camping outing in a scenic location of the Salt River Canyon. Monday morning, Hank (Grasshopper) drove over to my place and we loaded up my little truck for an exploratory trip out to a spot that he has visited a couple of times in the recent past; http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=22865

Hank will be posting more explicit details of the trip that he was recording while I was doing the driving :wrt: The weather was perfect with lots of sun and blue Arizona sky's and almost no wind. We had to stop occasionally on the way in to take some photos of the amAZing scenery that lay ahead of us.

Once at the end of the road, we hopped out and began exploring the area for camping sites and fireplaces. The rock formations that Hank had referred to as "white ledges" are spectacular as they extend from far across the Salt River, right through the campsite and continue on to the East. A dry wash flows through the site, makes a 30-foot vertical drop then continues on to the river.

We took pairs of loppers and trimmed the brush from the campsite following an unnamed wash on down to the river where it joins Blackjack Wash at a place in the canyon called Jump-off Canyon. Although Hank recorded the trimmed route on his GPS, I think it would be easy to follow by all the blood I left on the stubble :o There was Catclaw, Cholla, Occotillo, Palo Verde and just about any other blood sucking plant along the trail that we cut back to make a reasonable path leading from the camp to the river.

With the hard work finished we had to test out the facilities by having our lunch at a quickly set-up spot at the campsite and YUP, it's going to work out just fine. Looking forward to next month :y:
