I selected Siphon Draw because my earlier trip showed a lot of potential for blooming flowers, well, it turns out I'm still too early for optimum results.
I hiked up into the canyon while keeping an eye on the clouds but the scenes didn't seem right for good sunset photos, so I turned around and headed back towards the State Park. The Mexican Poppies were in the process of closing up for the day, so I shot away at them, the Lupine, the Globe Mallow and the Brittlebush as I waited for sunset. Along the trail I crossed paths with a Gila Monster as it slowly headed into the brush, pausing only long enough to allow me to get some shots.
As the sun began setting, the face of the mountain turned a brilliant red and added a strange reddish hue to the yellow Poppies. Four Peaks off in the distance was turning all shades of red against the dark shadows. Some of the shots just weren't working because everything had the same shade of red.
As the sun began slipping beyond the horizon, the clouds took on the magical colors of an Arizona sunset that I have become familiar with and during that final few minutes I got shots of a Saguaro absorbing those final rays. The sunset shots were less than I had hoped for because of the homes and lights of Apache Junction in the background. Guess next time I'll head out into the desert where I can be rid of the distracting lights. |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate Still listed as Moderate since a lot of the plants haven't opened yet. But it won't be long now. |
