As the morning wore on and the rain/snow clouds finally parted, I was presented with my first views of the snow carnage on Superstition Peak. All the TV media were reporting that this was a very rare snow occasion for this area (since I'm from Minnesota, I was happier with the sun). So I grabbed my trusty camera and tripod and headed out, only to find out that there were hundreds of others with the same plans :o

I drove to the East end of Broadway in Apache Junction where there's a trailhead for the Crosscut and Lost Goldmine trails and hit the muddied trails at full tilt (for a 72 year-old, that ain't too fast), splashing through the mud, running water and tripping over rocks and other photo nuts. I eventually found some spots where there weren't others in front of me and began shooting to my hearts content :D

Now consider, we drove 1,600 miles from a frozen Minnesota to enjoy the Arizona sun, but I gotta admit that this was a beautiful scene in front of me with the Superstitions coated in a light coating of fresh white snow. It was still kinda chilly out but I could almost watch the snow melting as I snapped away with the camera. I would have liked to move to Siphon Draw, but I could draw pictures in my mind of all the people gathered around with their trusty i-phone cameras shooting up the place, so I picked my way back through a muddy desert to my parked truck and headed home :(

It should be noted here that I'm prone to photographic cheating, but just a little bit, to enhance the detail and bring out the hidden colors of the scene. This photo set is done in HDR (High Dynamic Range) and consists of three shots taken consecutively while only changing the f-stop between shots (Bracketing) hence, the need for the tripod. The photos are then post-processed in Photomatix and then a final touch-up in Photoshop Elements 10. So after all that work, that's why the photos are a day late. Hope you enjoy them as much as my wife did after cleaning the mud off my shoes (since it was her idea to send me out there in the first place)

On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip.
