I have a sore throat and am feeling a bit weak today, so we stopped more often during the upward trail. I'm happy we did Aspen on the way up as it was more gradual than Marshall.
First, finding the trail head for Aspen. When facing the entrance to the restrooms, Aspen is to your left and Marshall to your right. There was mostly shade, but there were some sunny spots, so you should at least wear sunblock on your face. As we were hiking, using the main posting for this trail, we kept thinking we were done with the switchbacks and had seen the burned trees mentioned. Forget all of those as landmarks. Once you've reached a really cool rock outcropping on your right, that you can climb and take some pictures on, then you know you are about to reach the area where all of the trails merge. Each trail has a sign, so you will not get lost.
When you are coming down Marshall, you will reach a part where the trail splits. You can either go down to the left or up to the right. We went down to the left and it took us to the parking lot (about 10 or 15 minutes). I don't know where the up to the right went as it was unmarked.
It's great to finish this hike off at the Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven. They have the best pizza (all 3 of us agree) that we have ever tasted. |
