I've been back in that area probably three dozen times over the years and this is the first time since 1995 that I've seen that gate open. Lots of folks back in there having barbecues, etc. Made for an adventure walking in from the town. Light traffic on the trail. Most everyone was going in the opposite direction (Marshall to Aspen, possibly because it's easier.
Despite the fire this part of the mountain is still very special. I always forget what an awesome view of Cathedral you get from up there until I'm standing there taking it in. I used to hike this area a lot for a change of pace from the vertical stuff. In a sad stroke of irony, I was hiking this very same trail system on June 16th, 2003, coming out from Lemmon Rock to get pie. There were a zillion people back in Marshall Gulch barbecuing then, too. I think we all know what happened the next day. That's one Friday afternoon hike I'll never forget...
This hike was a special one, however, because it's the first one I've been able to convince my wife to go on since our son was born. I can't wait until he can hike himself in places, but for now I'm really happy just to have him along. He enjoyed the trees for a while before promptly falling asleep. Snuglis are not so great for hiking, by the way. The backpack will be much better when he's ready for it... |
