As we made our way along the rocky dirt road admiring the fault lines and wild rock formations of earthquakes past, I glanced at the vehicle thermometer which was reading 98 degrees. I knew this would be a short trip, since mid-day was quickly approaching and the temps would only continue to climb.
On our way into Painted Canyon (the approach to Ladder Canyon), we walked in the shadows of the massive canyon walls. The dry heat is not bad in the shade. Once inside the slot, the temps are cooler. The ladders inside the canyon were in good shape..no broken rungs.
We explored up canyon until the walls opened up to exposed sunlight. By now it was over 100 degrees. We decided to turn around as it really doesn't get much more interesting beyond this point. At 70 degrees we may have continued on.
We walked back to the trailhead. If you are a rock hound, there is definitely a mix of colors to be found, thus the name Painted Canyon. Beautiful geology in this otherwise desolate land. |
