| no partners | | I finally got around to fully exploring the creek that runs through this canyon. Followed the winding waterway for 3.5 miles. Due to long sustained rain over a couple days time, the waterfall flow was more than I've ever seen. Its really not a lot of water, but nature's design has created some beautiful cascades that make the flow look like much more than it really is.
I continued past the waterfall along a green meadow. At about the 2 mile mark, I entered an extreme burn area from the Wallow Fire. I could not find a single mature tree that survived the burn in this upper portion of the canyon. The trees were 100% wiped out. A new crop of young aspen are coming back with a vengeance. Some areas were thick like a jungle with aspen reaching about 4-5 feet high. Not bad considering the fire just passed through 2 years ago.
The further up creek I continued the lighter the water flow. The water seemed to just dry up at one point, but then re-emerged further up stream. The water is obviously going underground then resurfacing. The hike became less and less interesting.
I've written a new description for this hike. In the description, I recommend that hikers make their way up to the road before entering this extreme burn area. Today it was a 7.5 mile exploration. The posted description is closer to about 4 miles round trip.
You can spend 2 hours hiking here, or half a day if you stop to enjoy your time at the falls or take a picnic break in the green meadow. |
