| no partners | | My first ascent of Picacho. I've wanted to do this one for a long time, but just never seemed to make the time and the trip. Today worked out perfect. I dropped my daughter off at Bondurant Performance Driving School and had 5 hours to burn. Picacho is a 58 mile straight line shot down the 10 towards Tucson from the exit at Wild Horse Pass.
I arrived at the park at 8:15am. Paid my $7 park entrance fee and proceeded to the Hunter trailhead. The trail started working my lungs and legs almost immediately. I reached the saddle where many people just turn around. This is where it gets interesting.
Steep climbs and drops assisted by cables are frequent. Without the cables, this hike would present some serious risk and exposure. I arrived at the peak in 49:30. Enjoyed the view and relaxed up top for about 10 minutes before continuing down the same way. I felt much faster on the descent, but all in all, only ended up a couple minutes faster on the return.
Reached my car at 1hour, 47 minutes. The Dairy Queen by the entrance of the park was irresistable. Hawaiian blizzard made the ride home more enjoyable. |
