It follows an old jeep road for about a mile into the canyon to a capped well and stock tank, likely where the namesake windmill once stood. From there you can hike further up the canyon and even head toward the high peak of the range (Florida Peak 7448). I only went as far as the old well. There is an arch called Needles Eye high up on the ridge to the south, but it wasn't visible where I was. I have included a zoom shot of it from the highway back near Rockhound State Park.
You can hike up the ridge and head for the arch, but I didn't have the time or inclination to do that. Plus, from the old abandoned well at the end of the road it becomes more or less a bushwhack through lots of grass and vegetation in the canyon bottom. A Rock Rattlesnake give me a warning both coming and going at one point on the road. Wandering into the grasses past the well might be a bit exciting during the active snake season. This hike is better suited for the cooler months anyway.
The exceptional September rains that pounded New Mexico has resulted in a late resurgence of wildflowers, when normally things would be turning brown this late in the season. That was a plus. The main purpose of this quick trip to Deming was to get another sack of green chiles roasted at Peppers Supermarket. After briefly snooping around these mountains, that's what I did. Then it was lunch at Irma's Restaurant in Deming and back to Tucson. |
