So back to the Huachucas it was! Not wanting to do the hikes I had just done with Kelly, I thought it would be cool to head down to the Nature Conservancy Preserve in lower Ramsey Canyon and hike up canyon on the Hamburg Trail to where it meets the Comfort Springs Trail at the old mining area. The reason for this was two-fold: I knew it would give him a great introduction to the range by hiking in a shaded canyon with a running stream, and though I get down to the preserve on occasion, I haven't hiked the trail toward Hamburg in over 30 years! Thunderstorms failed to develop (drat!), so being in the shade of the beautiful canyon was welcome.
Because I also wanted to get Jack up that thrill ride of a road in nearby Carr Canyon, we turned back just before we got to the Comfort Springs trail junction. But what a treat it was to hike in here! I couldn't believe how much Scouring Rush (horsetail) was growing along the stream in its perennial sections. I can see why it is considered one of the crown jewels of this range. After returning to the visitor center where I purchased an updated trail guide, it was off to Carr Canyon and one of my favorite roads!

After showing Jack the two campgrounds and pointing other things of interest, it was back down the mountain for the drive to Tucson. On the way there in the morning I drove down on highway 90, but returned via the scenic route through Sonoita, so Jack could see the green grasslands that stretch for miles in that area. We stopped in South Tucson for Mexican food at Rigo's before he headed home. (Sorry Kelly, but we didn't get a picture of our food.)
So glad you got to see this in summer Jack! |
