I did a portion of this trail about 4 years ago, but have wanted to do a loop hike up here for a long time. When this one was posted by Letlet and David on 3H, I knew the time was right. It's actually a little better in about a month when it will be cooler down low and fall colors will be prime up high, but it worked out well on this day because of cloud cover and a threat of showers.

I drove up to Globe the day before the hike and stayed at a motel. Initially it was supposed to be a fair weather day for the hike, but when I arrived in Globe Saturday afternoon, storm clouds were already trying to form up ahead of an approaching low pressure trough and the rain chances were pegged at about 30 percent for Sunday's hike. This more or less would be the monsoon's last hurrah. Drove out to the trailhead at the CCC picnic area before the Phoenix crew arrived, and enjoyed the ominous clouds with occasional thunder streaming across the mountains. Only a few drops of rain were noted, but I was happy with the cloud cover and increasing wind for the uphill pull.

We never had to deal with lightning on the hike, which was good since we looped it by coming down the much more exposed Telephone Trail. Went up as far as the old sawmill site and not on up to the top of the mountain on this loop. Going through the monster Manzanita thickets and enjoying some really fantastic views were the high points of the Telephone Trail, but in general the Sixshooter was way nicer. The last mile or so back to the CCC trailhead was very steep and slippery and not fun. Overall though a nice hike on mostly good trail, especially up high. Beautiful forest in the upper sections. :)

Following the hike some of us stopped at the old reliable El Rey in Miami for Mexican food. :D
