I was looking for a nice half-day hike for a hiking group with a great view, and this is it. I've been wanting to try hiking down to the LaBarge Box too but time did not allow for that this time.
I will say that if you're aim is to see the LaBarge Canyon view, as was mine, you are best doing it in the afternoon. This hike generally traverses to the southeast, which means you would walk into the sun in the morning, and then your view into LaBarge Canyon is also to the southeast, meaning that your pictures will be into the sun. I noticed this on some other photosets for this hike. If you compare the pics I've posted to some others, you should notice the difference in the view. I think it's far more stunning in the later afternoon, reminiscent of a mini-Yosemite Valley, with Battleship Mountain as the equivalent of Yosemite's Half Dome.
This trail has absolutely no shade so make sure it's not too hot do this in the afternoon! I probably wouldn't try this in the afternoon much after early May, until perhaps October. And be careful on some of the loose rocks in the initial large ascent. |
