I've had good luck there before and planned a loop which took me to "unvisited" parts of a hillside I know to have good hunting, and then on to some other ridges and hilltops where I might stumble on to more.
It was nice walking now that it's cooled off a bit...the desert there is not too dense or sticky...and there was even water trickling down some of the draws.
The hillside did not disappoint: plenty of petroglyphs, some flat clearings and rock piles but no obvious ruin sites. Apparently the Verde Hohokam in these parts lived a mile or three away (Davenport, Mercer) but spent a lot of time in this area for agriculture and maybe religious reasons. I think there are a lot more petroglyphs on this and nearby hills than near the main ruins.
Finishing out the loop gave some nice views but I only saw one other small rock pile on a low ridge back near the start.
I had an unusual interaction with the ASU football game. Listening with one ear while hiking (the other is for snakes, bees, bears, etc) it was all ASU. In the car driving home it was all ND. As soon as I got out of the car and turned on the TV, total-Devil-domination. Probably just a coincidence. |
