| no partners | | I had only done the Hugh Norris Trail in its entirety once before, many years ago. I hike a portion of it, from the junction with Sendero Esperanza Trail eastward on occasion, when I am doing loops out of King Canyon. I wanted to see if my dislike of the western portion has changed. It has not.
Land of a 1000 Dances? Hardly. It is more like the Trail of 1000 Steps! Grrr I remember when they put those things in. What a "make work" overkill project that was. There is no question that it really cuts down on trail maintenance, but it sure is no fun for hikers. For me they were more of an annoyance on the uphill, but as I was getting tired and almost finished with the hike, they were becoming very tedious too. I much prefer the Chris Kenner/Wilson Pickett song to those steps, thank you very much.
Otherwise, you can see why the trail is popular, with great views on either side as you traverse the ridgeline. This is the longest way to do Wasson, but miles aren't my thing, so I prefer to get it done as quickly as possible, which is why I like the King Canyon approaches. But if you like AEG, this one gives you an additional 600-800 feet.
I kept a strong pace on this one as I needed the cardio from not hiking much lately, plus I wanted to get in a decent hike before tackling Miller Peak Wednesday. Still pretty toasty up there midday. These desert hikes will be very pleasant November to March. |
