| no partners | | It's a rare Saturday that my wife is not grading papers and she decided to come along. Maybe she just wanted to verify the place I go most weekends actually exists.
My plan was to continue along the SE mesa edge covering some new ground looking for petroglyphs. We walked the top of the rimrock (the easy way) for the first mile or two heading south from the Brooklyn Ruins, skipping previously covered territory, and then paid more attention for the next mile or so. To me its very impressive that you can find rock art essentially all the way. We walked for about 4 hours, almost to the Squaw Creek Ruins on the south edge of the mesa. Then suffering from "petroglyph overload" we peeled off and looped back, taking the jeep road part of the way.
The cliff band is not continuous but there aren't many long gaps where there aren't things to see. I think the glyphs became a bit older as we moved along, a little more faded, a little sloppier, and more geometrical shapes. There is some useful "crosstalk" between the glyphs on the rimrock and other habitation signs on the mesa. In a couple places a concentration of petroglyphs led us to find metates and pottery sherds further up on the flat, and vice versa. In particular we came across an unexpected ruin at the edge with associated walls, pottery, metates, and petroglyphs.
Anyway a good day, and I well tolerated my wife's claims that she found most of the good ones. |
