| no partners | | Went back to the Pima Canyon area to explore some more of the unmarked trails and digitally map some trails with my GPS that I haven't done in over a decade. My buddy Ted was also able to join me for this hike. Back almost 15 years ago when I first moved to AZ, he and I used to hike South Mt. most Sundays. Then I got married and had kids and I see Ted about twice a year now. It was nice to get out and hike with an old friend.
We took the Pima Canyon dirt road down to the CCC Structure and found the unmarked trail behind that which goes up to the ridge. On our way up before we got to the ridge, we found another unmarked trail that heads north then west towards the National Trail. It kind of looked like it headed down into the canyon. One more trail to go back and explore for another day. Once we got up top, we headed west on the Guadalupe Ridge trail to where I found a spur trail that looked like it might make its way down that southern canyon to the Desert Classic Trail. It faded away pretty quickly, so we cut back to the GuadRidge trail and took the same route I did 2 weeks ago down to the Desert Classic.
We took the Desert Classic Trail to a junction with some loops around the Corona de Loma east trail, which I did 4 or 5 years ago, and headed back. on the way out, we did a little section of the Young Man Trail that I've only seen on GoogleMaps, which kind of forms an oval shaped loop with the Desert Classic Trail.
Lots of bikers and trail runners on the Desert Classic Trail. Not many hikers.
During this hike, I used both my Oregon 450t and HAZTRKS. The mileage for each was off by almost a mile. the Oregon said 9.1 miles, and HAZTRKS said 10. The HAZTRKS did a big sawtooth jump at one point, which I edited out (kind of) on the route manager before I posted it. I've posted both tracks, and the HAZ computer lists each track as almost a mile off in distance . Not sure why this is, or which one is more accurate. Anyone have any suggestions/comments/ideas/etc? |
