Although there are lots of beaches where you can stop for a break you need to be aware that if you want to stop on the Reservation you are supposed to have a permit.
Right now the river is running between 5500 and 15,000 cfs. Low flow is early in the morning while peak flow is around 6 p.m. The water level is never really a problem for kayakers here. But in hot weather on the weekends, and during higher flows, you will see a lot of speedboats and jet-skis. That is why the off-season and weekdays are so nice. Peak motorboat seasons are spring break and summer weekends and warm holiday weekends.
If you pick your time right you might not see a single boat. I saw none when I did the same run last December. This trip we saw three boats: One slowly trolling fishing boat and two of the London Bridge Jet Boats. (They do a day run from Laughlin to Lake Havasu, which is 120 miles round trip. It looks fun but noisy. I'm going to go on it one of these days. It's $70. Check it out--it goes via Topock Gorge [well duh] and that's one way to see the gorge in a hurry. They give you a couple hours to find some lunch at Lake Havasu City, then you ride back.)
The birds we saw were mostly coots and great blue herons. A few vultures and ravens soared overhead. |
